relatively new Caldera at its Summit in
two active Rift zones the Volcano Summit
Caldera is home to a pit crater named
Helma umu which had an active lava lake
from 2008 to 2018 the rift zones located
125 km or 78 Mi to the East and 35 km or
22 Mi to the West are active faults that
move vertically at a rate of 2 to 20 mm
per year the depth of these Rift zones
is still unknown Kia previously

impact of kila's eruptions on
communities in the environment has been
profound in 1990 the towns of Kalapana
and Kimu along with their famous black
sand beach were were destroyed in May
2018 the volcanic activity shifted to

concerns volcanic gases and other
hazards a apart from the destructive
power of lava flows kilaa eruptions
release significant amounts of volcanic
gases including water vapor carbon
dioxide and sulfur dioxide when these
gases mix with the atmosphere they form
a haze known as volcanic Smog or vog
this smog can pose health risks to
humans livestock and crops particularly
when carried by strong winds the
eruption gives rise to other hazards
such as wall instability ground cracking
rockfalls and the formation of sharp
volcanic particles called Pelle hair
Pelle hair named after the Hawaiian
goddess of volcanoes is lightweight and
easily carried by wind posing a threat
to both humans and Aviation the recent

landmarks and the alteration of the
coastline has been a harsh reminder of
the power and unpredictability of nature
authorities have reassured residents
that immediate danger is not present as
the eruption remains confined within the

gases and the formation of hazardous
volcanic particles emphasize the need
for caution and protection Hawaii
