Understanding how to ask for help is the best way to find it.

have you ever said the words but you're
the I.T guy
chances are you're very confused or
you're doing something wrong
I've been working with computers for 22
years professionally and then many years
prior to that unprofessionally
I work with computers every day it is my
job
but I am not an I.T guy
I have not been an I.T guy for a very
long time
if you're already confused let me clear
that up as quickly as possible
before I dive into this
the reason for this video and the reason
for most of my videos is to educate you
and to help you get the tools and
resources you need
to tackle your technology so if you're
looking for help with your computer your
tablet or iPad your smartphone whatever
something to do with a computer
you need to know who to ask for help and
how if you don't know you're not going
to get the help you need
all right back to the topic in today's
world it at least as a job description
or job title refers to typically
going to somebody's desk
fixing their computer or taking
somebody's laptop fixing their laptop
because something has gone wrong with it
there's obviously much more to it than
that this is just a simplified
description
so if you need usernames passwords if if
you need antivirus if your computer is
locked and you need it unlocked things
like that they call it break fix you
break your computer is broken
you need it fixed or something with your
computer is broken you need that fixed I
haven't done that style of work
since at least
2013 but back then when I was still
doing that it wasn't even in my job
description or my job title I did that
out of necessity I haven't really been
an I.T guy
since about
2010 or 2011. now if it's starting to
get a little bit confusing let me use
just a few metaphors
if you know a Doctor Who's a podiatrist
somebody who works on feet and you ask
them what's wrong with your eyeball or
what's the skin rash that I have you're
not going to get the diagnosis or the
expertise that you're actually looking
for because this person does not
specialize in the thing you've asked
them to help you with
you wouldn't ask a heart surgeon to
operate on somebody's brain it doesn't
make sense you wouldn't ask
a dermatologist
to diagnose your ti issue you it doesn't
make sense
computers are just the same there are
many different disciplines with
computers
and most of them are not I.T the term
I.T does not pertain to everything
having to do with a computer another
metaphor auto mechanics you wouldn't go
to a transmission shop and ask them if
they're going to do your body work
because they're not going to do your
body work they are a transmission shop
that's not what they do now what most
people end up doing is they assume
because somebody works with computers
and they're comfortable with computers
even if they don't know how to solve the
problem they're asking is that they will
fumble around and figure it out better
than them this is a problem
this is not fair to the person you're
asking and it's not fair to you because
you're not going to get the problem
solved correctly they're going to cut
Corners they're just going to get you
out of their hair as quickly as possible
the problem is going to come back or a
new set of problems are going to show up
because you asked the wrong person for
help people who work with computers do
not have magical inborn knowledge of all
things relating to computers
for years and years and years people
come to me with problems about Facebook
I hate Facebook I don't know how to fix
your problem you know who's going to be
better at it than me
is either somebody who works in social
media that's their job or
a teenager and I'm not joking
the people who spend all day playing on
social media using over and over
figuring out all the intricacies of it
somebody who's very familiar with it is
going to be more inclined to fix the
problem you're asking them about
now to be fair I said teenagers right
now teenagers barely use Facebook they
use tick tock and Instagram I'm just
illustrating a point you're asking the
wrong people for help my job
is fixing big computers that run the
internet if you've ever heard the cloud
a term I absolutely hate that's what I
work on I'm A Cloud engineer
I basically make a small portion of the
Internet run and run well that's my job
I do not fix people's computers if you
run Windows I don't even use Windows
that much anymore so I'm probably not
the best person to fix your problem
now you'll run into a case where some
people who work in technology if you ask
them to help they're going to be willing
to help there's a variety of reasons for
this
but not all of them
have the expertise needed to fix your
problem and fix it correctly
most of them like I said earlier are
going to cut corners and just address
the immediate problem and not look at it
in a holistic fashion back when I was
fixing people's computers I would do
that I wouldn't just fix the problem I
would look at other problems and and
address those ask the customer if they
would like me to address those other
problems that I see that I notice
because what I'm doing is trying to fix
and prevent future problems from coming
up after I'm done fixing this immediate
problem
this is the same thing a specialist
doctor would do in a situation where
you've come to them with a problem is
they're gonna not just going to address
the immediate problem they're going to
look at everything
and that is the difference
now the reason why all of this is
important is because we are
very close to 30 years into this
experiment this experiment of a computer
in every home this was Bill Gates Vision
back in 1995.
and almost nobody knows what they're
doing
nobody is safe with computers they are
stupid they are lazy they are selfish
and
they continue to get themselves into
trouble and think it's somebody else's
fault it's not it's their fault
their fault for not knowing you can't
always blame them but their fault for
not caring to know that part you can
blame because they either get impatient
they get frustrated they get overwhelmed
or they are just simply not interested
in knowing
now this is not to insult anybody I'm
not trying to look down on you for not
being
automatic experts with computers that
goes against my entire message what I'm
saying is it's time it's time to stop
Outsourcing this knowledge onto other
people and start taking responsibility
for the devices that you buy and use and
that's why I'm here is to help people
who still struggle with the basics of
Technology
and teach you the right way to go about
it
even though I'm not going to fix your
computer I'm going to teach you
how to get the help you need
and then start to take care of things on
your own that's what this channel is
about
so remember just because somebody works
with computers doesn't mean they are the
IT guy and just because they work with
computers doesn't mean they know how to
fix your problem that's it
