Welcome to Little Chinese Learners.
Many of you sent me your recordings
and they were excellent
so I picked one to share with all of you.
Huā Huā de bàba jiào Jacob.
Huā Huā de bàba sānshíjiǔ suì
Huā Huā de māmā jiào Grace
Huā Huā de māmā sānshísān suì
Great job!
We’re ready to drop bà bà mā mā into our learning jar.
Wait...Wait... I mean,
we need to drop the Chinese characters
of bà bà mā mā into the learning jar!
bà
mā
Now, we have learned to introduce ourselves
and our Moms and Dads.
That’s a great way to meet new people
but another way to meet new friends
is to ask someone to tell us who they are.
For example,
if we see Xiǎo Tiān playing with someone
we’ve never met before,
we can ask him,
Who is that?
Let’s learn to say that in Mandarin.
To ask "Who is this?" in Chinese,
we say:
zhè shì shuí?
Who is this?
zhè shì shuí?
zhè shì shuí?
Can you try it?
zhè shì shuí?
Great!
zhè shì shuí?
Now, that works for someone near to us
but for someone who is further away from us,
we say,
nà shì shuí?
Who is that?
nà shì shuí?
nà shì shuí?
Can you try it?
nà shì shuí?
Wonderful!
nà shì shuí?
zhè shì shuí?
nà shì shuí?
Let’s compare the two sentences.
Both of them end with the character shuí,
which means who.
If you look closer,
the only difference between zhè shì shuí
and nà shì shuí
is the first character -
zhè and nà
We use zhè for people or things closer to us
and we use nà for people or things further away from us,
similar to the way we use this and that in English.
Let’s try to use sentences together.
zhè shì shuí?
zhè shì Xiǎo Tiān。
Xiǎo Tiān jǐ suì?
Xiǎo Tiān bā suì。
nà shì shuí?
nà shì Xiǎo Tiān de mā mā。
Xiǎo Tiān de mā mā jǐ suì?
Xiǎo Tiān de mā mā sān shí bā suì。
Fantastic.
Do you remember how we use the word de
to mean belonging to someone or something.
Well, we can add it to this sentence as well.
zhè shì shuí de?
Whose is this?
zhè shì wǒ de。
This is mine.
nà shì shuí de?
Whose is that?
nà shì tā de。
That is his.
Good job! Let’s try a few more.
zhè shì shuí de xiǎo māo?
zhè shì Huā Huā de xiǎo māo。
xiǎo māo jǐ suì?
xiǎo māo wǔ suì。
nà shì shuí de xiǎo gǒu?
nà shì Xiǎo Tiān de xiǎo gǒu。
xiǎo gǒu jǐ suì?
xiǎo gǒu sān suì。
nà shì shuí?
nà shì Cindy lǎo shī。
Cindy lǎo shī jǐ suì?
Hmm….. Let me think…
I think I am 37… but wait, maybe I am 38.
Oh no, I’m not too sure!
When people get older,
they forget things quickly and one of the hardest things
to remember is how old we are.
Ooh… Culture gem alert! Culture gem alert!
What do we have today?
Whoa….
That’s a lot of animals.
shǔ、niú、hǔ、tù、
lóng、shé、mǎ、yáng、
hóu、jī、gǒu、zhū
Oh, I get it! It’s the twelve zodiac animals.
When people get older like Cindy lǎo shī,
we sometimes forget important things like how old we are...
so to help people keep track,
the Chinese people came up with the zodiac system
a long time ago.
The Chinese Zodiac,
or shí èr shēng xiāo
are 12 animals that each represent one year in a 12-year cycle.
People born in the same year have the same zodiac.
2010 was the year of the Tiger.
2014 was the year of the Horse.
2019 was the year of the Pig.
Some Chinese people associate each animal
with different characteristics
like the Tiger is known to be more fierce
and the Monkey is known to be smart
but a little mischievous.
I think all twelve animals are special
because they help old people like me remember our age!
But… there are so many animals out there…
how were these twelve animals selected?
Hmm...
It’s time for a story!

I love this song. I hope you enjoy it too.
If you still don’t remember the twelve zodiac animals,
no worries.
The only one you really need to know is YOUR zodiac
so for today’s homework,
take this worksheet,
find the year you were born in, circle it, and color in your zodiac!
After you finish coloring,
show this worksheet to nǐ de bà bà mā mā
or anyone who speak Mandarin,
point to one of these animals and ask
zhè shì shuí?nà shì shuí?
Have fun finding your zodiac
and don’t forget to send your homework to me.
I’ll see you next time! zài jiàn!
