-Welcome to the Sleep Ranch! We are located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where our ancestors settled and started ranching in 1883.
I (Carson) work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town, and our son Silas! We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.

we're having our uh morning tea which we
never do we never
do I usually don't have tea in the
morning or anything we're not coffee
drinkers sometimes Believe it or notaris
likes iced coffee m i us so can't be
black so I'm not a coffee lover
no how'd you sleep I
didn't Leon was pretty grumpy last
night
he was like this for almost the night
yep what's
wrong it's
okay camera's still rolling you got to
show that beauty oh that's
beautiful chicken eggs our chicken eggs
mhm here you can sit and look at your
mother I got the pleasure of looking at
you all night long so I don't you don't
need to look at him
anymore we are down to our last about 20
heers um I came and checked them this
morning there was two new Cales and one
cow who was just acting like she was
going to start cing so gave her a little
time came back want to check on her see
if she ended up having her
calf she was a purple tag
cow think she's down in the corner here
was the two new
ones oh yeah she had
him good job
Mama I can't tell if he's gotten up yet
I don't think
so but I'm going to leave her in here
turn the rest of the heers back
out there only about 20 of them left so
we're almost done but yeah I'll leave
these three pairs in here so we can tag
them then we'll turn them out back out
into
pasture
[Music]
some pretty round
haers they're all getting pretty close
to
cing once they're done it's going to be
a lot lot less work cing once halfers
are all done and we'll just be cing the
last of our
cows
lots and lots of new cabs this morning
we got one two 3 4 5
six seven just right here one cabin sure
there's another seven or 10 up there so
we'll get to work tagging some cash
first one 32
[Music]
green
hopefully the cows will be nice this
morning it's okay it'll be over in a
minute all
right nice little bull CF some people
were wondering what we're giving them
again this is just shot of
vitamins cow's going to knock my camera
over just a shot of vitamins um I think
it's got vitamin A C
selenium I don't remember what else and
then this is just an internasal goes
right in their nose this is
for that's for just some restes
like tag this guy and we'll let him
[Music]
go this cow that's
cing it's kind of
in a bad
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
[Music]
mood somebody also asked if we ever get
attacked and yes it does happen usually
if they're too
wide usually if they're too wild we'll
just run them into the barn and tag them
in there a lot of them are mostly just
talk like this cat she's not actually
going to do
anything but
uh last week one did get me not very bad
she wasn't super confident in herself
she just ran
up hit me
once this was another bull yeah most of
them are just all talk they make a lot
of
noise
[Applause]
that kind of get a kick out of it it's
kind of fun it makes it feel pretty
alive when
a 14 13,400 lb animal is screaming in
your
[Music]
face eer
come
[Music]
on
yeah ah
what's he doing is he trying to move the
chickens tu
tu you going to show us your dump truck
where's your new
tractor whoa hi
Angus hi
hi
you want your
tractor there you
go
wee
oh that is
cool yeah stick her in the dump truck
should we find some more rocks here's
one put that in there no not in your
mouth in the dump truck yeah there you
go there you
go
wee do we need to go check the
chickens yeah you door
mhm I think
so I think so
camaris is going to take a little nap
with
Leighton but it's so nice how we're
going to play outside aren't we buddy
yeah yeah
mhm yep we don't eat rocks Rock goes in
the dump truck in the dump
truck yeah I like that uhoh uh-oh oh
that
mhm what you want to go look at the
chickens okay let's go come
on chicken say you
remember
yeah
whoa hey
rooster where'd they go they all went in
here you see them in
there can you look in
there what are they doing in there hi
hey
chickens yeah hey chickens what are they
doing in
there can you see
you
bullet it's okay it's
okay yeah you're
free
and notice this little
cow has a hurt leg but no cow has come
to claim it so I feel like a cow dropped
it and then she went to eat or something
expected her C to follow her but he's
got a hurt leg so he never
follow so he's uh been looking for a mom
all day well he's just been laying here
but he hasn't had a mom all
day I don't know exactly who his mom
is
I have a few ideas this gets hard
cuz there's so many cows cing 20 30 a
day you
know one or two don't claim theirs very
well if one or two don't claim theirs
very well it's really tough to get them
straight so I've got a couple numbers I
wrode down last night but I saw the cab
had just had fresh ones that I didn't
tag their
CS yet cuz I couldn't find a c so I
think one of them's got to be his
mom one of them's got to be his mom so
I'll get her in we get a couple of them
in peeing on me
buddy I'm going to go find your
mom nice peace stand okay I'm going to
go try and find his mother so here's the
other calf I have untagged that I was
going to look for his mom too I thought
this cow here 221 I knew she was a mom
of one of these but I didn't know which
one she seems to like this calf so I'm
going to assume they're a pair so that
means that other calf his mom is
actually Penelope so I got to find
Penelope it would kind of make sense cuz
Penelope is so laidback and quiet you
know it's nice cuz she a good pet but
she doesn't you
know she's not very caring she's not
going to get up and take care of a cap
so that could be the reason why that cap
was left over
there all right
Penelope you are not being a good mother
come on let's go
in are you going to be a pin in the butt
come on let's go in you're not being a
good mom come on I'll go get get you
your calf but we got to go
inside come
on okay move see this is where it can be
kind of a pain when they're so tang go
ahead come
on come
on turn
around good
girl come
on come on going on in there
you know where to
go
no
good
good all right Penelope is
[Applause]
yours seems to like
him I think that's probably her
calf see if she lets him suck
right there you missed
it all right I'm going to say that's
Penelope's calf
well so this one is that 221
scaff all all right I think we got it
squared
away sometimes it's a
mystery just making sure they like their
babies we got one extra who there was a
wild
cow that I ran in the barn cuz she was
trying to her and Penelope really like
the same calf this morning but then when
I came
back that wild cow had a calf or was
with a calf but I had to run her in I
lost the calf on um they all look the
same so trying to figure out three right
now I think Penelope is pretty given I
think this 221 likes this
calf this middle one must
be must be that wild
cows so that looks like a good pair
Penelope's too quiet so she's letting
both suck but I'm pretty sure this is
her calf so I'm going to give this one
to that wild
cow okay buddy let's if I knew your
mother hopefully don't get killed in the
process
relax in
there
I'm going leave him alone leave leave
you guys with
her cuz she'll be too wild she'll be too
riled up while I'm in here so I'll leave
you
guys we can see later if she likes the
calf or
not
[Music]
all right girls back in for the
[Music]

[Music]
good night girls have a bunch of
Cals

oh hope be all
right H him
