Kevin Cartwright, Baltimore City Fire Department's Chief Public Information Officer, joins “CBS Mornings” to talk about coordinated search and rescue effort is being conducted by multiple agencies in the aftermath of Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.
Joining us now with the very latest on the rescue effort is the Baltimore City Fire Department's
chief public information officer, Kevin Cartwright.
Kevin, thank you very much for joining us.
I think the most haunting thing we learned in the press conference earlier this morning
as we take in these pictures of the collapsed bridge was that sonar ... Kevin, do we have
you?
Yeah.
The signal is going in and out.
I can barely hear you at the interval.
Okay.
The question is, the sonar from your department is showing vehicles in the water.
What's the latest on the effort to reach those vehicles at this time?
Certainly, we are still, once again, very early in that aspect of the operation.
We are reconvening with many of our assets that are here on location, as indicated before.
This is a multi-agency, multi-jurisdiction, multi-casualty incident.
We are preparing with our dive and rescue team who will be redeploying to the water
in the vicinity where the actual bridge collapsed.
We will have to operate very methodically, considering the nature and the environmental
element.
Right now, it's close to roughly 30 degrees.
I'm certain that the water temperatures are even lower.
We have to operate methodically and carefully, safely, so that our dive team members don't
become victims themselves.
Kevin, we've heard that up to 20 people may be in the water.
Two have been found and rescued so far.
Is the number of rescues still at two?
The number remains at two.
As this is a developing incident, I've learned that that 20 number may not necessarily be
20.
However, the developments change by the moment.
Hopefully, that number does not get any higher as we ensue into this rescue operation.
Kevin, do we know what's on that ship?
It seems to be full with cargo.
I know this is also a HAZMAT route.
Is the cargo itself and the materials that may have been on the bridge complicating things
for rescuers?
There's been no complication to us at this point.
However, specifically what's on that vessel will be determined as we engage further into
our investigation.
Again, we have multiple local, state, and federal agencies convened on our incident
command location here.
That will be developing.
We will be determining and identifying exactly what was on that vessel, where they were actually
en route to as they were leaving out of the Patapsco River.
The sun is only just coming up in Baltimore, but the Baltimore City Fire Department has
already put in a full day.
Kevin Cartwright, chief public information officer for that department, with the latest
on the search and rescue after this bridge collapsed.
Kevin, thank you very much.
