How do the Germans live and how are they really?
Deutschlandlabor.
Hello, we are Nina and David from Deutschlandlabor.
We answer questions about Germany and the Germans.
Today's topic is hiking.
Many people in Germany like to be in nature and hike there.
We want to know why the Germans like to hike and what is important to them.
There are many hiking trails in Germany.
A total of about 200,000 kilometers.
The Germans like to hike and spend a lot of money on it.
On average, 7.4 billion euros a year.
Germany is the main destination for hiking.
Do you like to hike?
Occasionally, yes.
No.
Yes, we try.
I like it very much.
The nice thing about hiking is that you can move through unknown landscapes
and visit new places more often.
Relaxation.
Fresh air, a lot of movement.
Exhaustion and then good food.
In fact, many people like to hike in their free time.
They like to be in nature and relax.
For a hobby in nature, the right clothing is very important.
In bad weather, you need a good rain jacket.
Sturdy boots protect you from injuries when hiking for a long time
and you don't get wet feet.
Outdoor clothing is very popular in Germany
and is worn by many people even in their free time.
Even by little children.
Now Nina and David only need a good hiking area.
The Echsternsteine are located in the Teutoburg Forest,
a middle mountain range in North Rhine-Westphalia.
We are now equipped and ready to hike.
But where is the best place to hike?
We are now asking an expert.
Here at the Echsternsteine there are many very wide and comfortable hiking trails.
Mr. Petersen is chairman of a hiking club.
Mr. Petersen, where can you hike well in Germany?
In principle, you can hike well everywhere.
Whether it is in the flatlands or whether it is in the mountains
or like here with us in the Middle Mountains.
Hiking can be done everywhere.
The most beautiful thing is of course in the forest.
And why is hiking fun?
Hiking is fun because you are simply out in nature.
You can enjoy nature and it is very beautiful in the forest.
And when you come home, there is coffee and cake?
No, not when we come home,
but after the hike we basically turn in for coffee and cake
and maybe one or the other also another drink.
How important a good path and a hiking map are,
we see in a small experiment.
Nina hikes with a hiking map on normal hiking trails to Hermannsdenkmal.
David goes directly across the forest.
The 15 km long hike is not a problem for Nina.
She enjoys the landscape on comfortable hiking trails.
David has it harder in the forest.
Nina has finally arrived at Hermannsdenkmal
and is waiting for David.
That took a long time.
Well, I won.
But it was still fun.
Most Germans like to hike,
and functional clothing is important to them.
But hiking was really exhausting.
My legs still hurt.
Come on, you've been in the fresh air once and moved.
Then I suggest I go to the fresh air now and you stay here.
No, we're not done yet.
