March 12, 2024 | White Mountains, NH • It's not a huge mountain, the hike to the top from the Cog side is pretty mellow. And yet, Mount Washington has a reputation of having the worst weather in America... the word "scary" was uttered a few times when we had to turn around. Not capturing all that went on on camera.. I ll say this much: It was hard to walk, the wind would throw you around, skiing was not an option. Everything in my body said "get out of here". With skins on, I turned around 300m from the summit, just trying to get somewhere where I would feel more comfortable to ski from again. Eric and Zephyn, thanks for the company and great adventure!
Fighting and being blown around backwards.
He separated from the group and started to punch towards the peak.
We're going to try to go for the summit.
We'll see if the wind will decide otherwise.
Now, take a look up and you can see how quickly the clouds are moving up on the summit while we can still kind of see it here.
Mount Washington has this reputation for having the world's worst weather.
And part of that reputation is that the weather can change really, really quickly.
People ask me often times, what's the weather forecast for the mountain?
My forecasts operate like this. I take a look up at the top.
It's gusting over 100 miles an hour up there.
Within the last 24 hours, they recorded a 150.
Which side are you going down?
How did you know?
Luck.
So I just got off the train.
This peak is clearing up, but they said there are still 98 miles an hour of winds.
And minus 30.
So my goal is getting up to the ridge.
And yeah, we'll see.
This side, nobody tracked it up yet.
There was one guy coming down on skis this morning with a dog.
But for some reason, everybody else is staying on the other side of the tracks.
We talked to the kid with the dog.
He was skiing down. You probably saw him.
Yeah, I saw him all the way at the bottom.
We went up here.
He said he stopped at a flat area before the summit.
He said at that point, it wasn't very windy.
But I think he would have said that earlier.
You're going to be the object of my video today.
Oh, great.
I make snow edits. I have a family in Europe.
Oh, yeah, nice.
Oh, cool.
Tell them we're in Chamonix right now.
They know Chamonix.
We are at the Jacob Ladder.
And this is 4,700 feet.
We're still debating whether we want to go higher up to the summit.
The snow so far looks good. The wind is not too bad.
But I heard that the forecast has changed.
That the wind is going to stay pretty high throughout the day.
So we'll see.
Why is it so far?
Fine for boot packing.
Yeah.
So we just got above the tree line.
The wind is picking up a little bit.
We're going to put on some more layers just in case we can continue.
Above the ridge line to the top.
You want to go first?
Were you looking to film me go?
A little bit.
It's getting pretty icy here.
A little bit windy.
But we need to continue because the sun is waiting.
At the very top first.
I kind of just kept my head down and kept going.
I'm never going to take my skis off.
Yeah, if we skied on this we might stop and hike to the section.
Or we might try this side of the track.
But it's probably over an hour from here to the summit.
Yeah, that's what I thought.
You don't even know what's happening, you know?
Until you start kicking.
We're going to try to go for the summit.
We'll see if the wind will decide otherwise.
Wish us luck.
I see you're back in business.
Yeah, back on my planks.
So that is hope.
Might be it, I don't know.
Yeah, but this is really nice skiing.
As long as the wind is not too bad.
Exactly on the other side of that mountain.
Okay, it doesn't make sense anymore.
I'm going to turn around.
I had to turn around when we were hiking towards the summit.
The wind died down quite a bit.
And it looked like we are going to have a window to get to the top very comfortably.
The snow looked really good as well.
I was looking forward to skiing it down.
But we got, I don't know how far.
300 feet maybe.
Maybe a little bit more.
From the summit.
I wasn't sure if I'll be able to handle it and ski down through that.
Unfortunately I had to part with the other two guys.
The young guy, he separated from the group and started to punch towards the peak.
And that was right at the time when we were discussing whether we should give it up and turn around.
But the father had to go get him.
So I hope they're okay.
Today I'm going to try to get down to the mid section of the train.
And call the summit.
The summit is normally closed in the winter.
You have to really bang the door to get in.
At least that's what I was told.
So I assume since they were in the middle of that horrible weather.
I assume they're going to go for the top and just try to get in and get warm.
I hope they're okay. Anyway.
It's always the frozen, yeah.
You have ice everywhere.
Oh boy, that was a little scary.
Well I'm glad you guys made it safe.
Yeah, me too.
We're almost at a point where we might have had to leave our skis.
Because trying to walk with skis on our packs.
I went like...
So what did you learn from this lesson?
I need to...
Stick together?
Yes, definitely.
I honestly thought you guys went all the way.
I don't think we could have.
It took us a solid five minutes downhill.
Fighting and being blown around backwards.
Until we get to the point where we're like okay.
Now at least we're not getting blown backwards.
I got less scared.
In time.
Barefoot on the grass, open skies.
I can feel it every time I close my eyes.
My eyes.
All those young legs.
They're having fun, huh?
Can you remember?
When we were young and free.
Like queens upon.
Never surrender, but having too much fun.
Could feel it in my bones.
I was never alone.
That was epic.
That was awesome.
Feels like a bad sunburn right now.
Did you guys want to get marshmallows in the middle?
You know they have a fireplace.
And you can sit down and make marshmallows.
Oh yeah, you paid so we can do that.
Yeah.
Thanks.
Oh, there are rocks hiding.
I'm hitting a lot of rocks.
Oh no.
Oh my gosh.
These rocks are so bad.
Man, I wish I had your legs.
I saw you at the top.
And I'm like.
When I was young.
They're getting a little sore though for sure.
Thanks.
Sorry Seth, you don't have to say that.
We know you're cute.
I was trying to capture your beautiful turns.
Yeah, they look good, but they don't feel good.
It's okay, he almost hit that one rock.
Yeah, yeah.
I'll be careful.
So we just finished.
I said goodbye to my companions.
They made it down safely.
And it was an epic day.
Except that little thing.
I don't know.
And some more shots of my skis.
And broken a buckle on my helmet.
Other than all of that.
Very good day.
