This week on the Sunday ride we are leaving Asia and going overseas to Australia where we cycle
from Cairns to Townsville. We adapt to a new environment and I reach a new big milestone.
So sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.
Welcome to a new week live from Dili here in Timor Leste.
After having reached the end of the Asian route here in Dili a couple days ago we've been very
busy preparing to fly to our next continent. We're going to Australia and the fact is that
Australia has a lot of regulations concerning soil, dirt, stuff like that so everything needs
to be thoroughly cleaned. The bikes, the camping gear, clothes, anything you can imagine, everything
has been deep cleaned. We're still busy putting the bikes into the bike boxes right now.
The boxes are really small so we're seeing how to make it fit.
So it's quite stressful but hopefully tomorrow morning we're taking the plane to Australia.
So
so
and down under welcome to Australia. Country number 28 and actually the third continent
out of the four that I'll be visiting on this trip. It's a pretty cool milestone and a new
chapter starting and yeah there's lots of things to talk about especially the transition coming
from Asia to Australia. A lot of big big changes one of which is the financial challenge down here.
Things are really expensive here and we have to adapt a little bit. So in between the cities
it's going to be pretty much only camping and luckily in the cities there are a lot of warm
showers availabilities. Speaking of which for the last couple of days we've been staying with
Sue and Ian down in Cairns and they have been absolutely amazing. Very very sweet people.
They made us feel like we found a family for a couple of days on the other side of the world so
thank you guys if you see this. Really appreciate it and for us it's time to camp out in the
Australian bushes for the very first time, cook some dinner and then tomorrow continue down south.
Oh man, this is not a great start of the Australian adventure. We were cycling here
on this road on the Tablelands near to Etherton and I hear something snap and look down and it
appears to be my front derailleur where it's screwed to the frame snapped in half. So found a
temporary solution right now just with cable ties and it's far from ideal. I can only use one gear
at least I can make my way down to the next town. Hopefully we can fix it there but
this is not how you want this to start. A very good morning from the Tablelands
and as we are enjoying our morning ride here over the beautiful rolling hills of this beautiful
landscape I am slowly counting down because something exciting is about to happen.
10,000 kilometers ago I was in Iran on an empty highway and if you've seen that video you might
remember what happened there. I crossed the 10,000 kilometer checkpoint and right here right now in
northeast Australia I am about to cross the next one. 20,000 kilometers, one to be extremely proud
of. What a milestone! Basically on the other side of the world and I cycled here so yeah this is
one to remember. So beautiful, beautiful landscape to also celebrate this milestone and we're not
there yet. There's still at least 10,000 kilometers more to go so onwards we go
and explore into the world. Cheers to 20,000 kilometers.
So we were having lunch here in this creek. We were cooling our feet a little bit in the water
and we got a friendly reminder that we are still in Australia and that wildlife around here can be
creepy or dangerous because right next to our lunch this guy, shut up,
it's honestly the size of my hand. I don't know if it's venomous but creepy for sure.
A good morning on this last day to Townsville, the final destination of our couple first days
here on Australian soil. We still have a very big day ahead about 160 kilometers but to be honest
we've also made it back to the coastal area which means there's no way getting around
the flat and straight main road. So we've been eating kilometers for breakfast and I'm quite
confident we can get there in time and then after Townsville we can look forward
to a couple of beautiful weeks to Brisbane and then to Sydney.
Next week we are confronted with the sheer size of this incredibly big country
and all its desolated areas. We battle intense headwinds for hundreds of kilometers
and we meet more Australian wildlife but that's it for this week and I'll see you in the next one.
