I'll be right here, I'll be right here, I'll be right here, I'll be right here, I'll be right here
Hella shameless, necklace on me decorated
All this got me feeling jaded
Hold up, hold up, I be waiting
Bad thing on my radar
Told me that I'm in a playlist
Flower bombs, she a lotus
Got me thinking that I'm famous
I remember when I prayed for this
No sleep cause I'm anxious
All this for entertainment
Hazy thinking that it's day one
All this spending for the taking
Yeah, yeah
Hold it down for the nameless
Yeah, yeah
Oh, yeah
I've been on a grind, yeah
Like I'm really on the rails
Cause my life is on the line, yeah
I've been getting minds in
I've been onto you
Nothing left to lose
Get into the bag, yeah
I've been onto you
I'm seeing how you move
Imagine all the things we get into
I need you to put me all the way
This is FYF Sportsman, it's Lamont
We are back with another podcast episode
As you can see from the title today
We're gonna be talking about
Every NBA rookie
And not every NBA rookie
Really just like the top
8 to 10
But we're gonna be talking about
One flaw that all of these top rookies
Need to improve over the offseason
I mean
The one thing that we can say about this rookie class is
Going into this season
Everybody thought that this class was
Underwhelming
One of the worst drafts we've seen
And it actually turned out to be
One of the better draft classes
Over the last 10 years
So we're gonna be diving into all that
We're gonna touch on a number of players
We're gonna speak on how they can improve
But before we get started with today's video
Make sure you guys like, comment, and subscribe
Hit the notification bell to the video
If you haven't done so already
We are grinding to 25k
We should hit that sometime next week
Hopefully if things go according to plan
But 25k is the small goal
100k is the yearly goal
Hopefully we can get there
But as we speak on the rookie class
For the majority of the 2020 NBA rookie class
The offseason has already begun
Most of these players have been eliminated from the playoffs
A lot of them are going home
And then they have to look to how they're gonna develop
Next season
Following a quick turnaround from the draft
This past season
With no summer league and no preseason
These rookies now have
They have a chance to really catch their breath
And then focus on developing their games
The class as a whole made a tremendous impact on the league
And some of these players look like all-stars
At some point in time in the season
We talk about LaMelo Ball
He had flashes prior to his injury
We talk about Anthony Edwards
He definitely had some big time flashes going on
Going into the end of the season
Players like Obi Toppin
Who we thought would have big seasons
Dealt with injuries
And then once he got into rotation
He really couldn't find his way
We got Denny Avedagi
Season ending injury
Killian Hayes
Just did not look like he was NBA ready
We have a lot of different things
That impacted each rookie
But the one thing that we can say
Is that this rookie class did
Surprise everyone
So we're gonna be going over
10 rookies today
We're gonna go over 10 rookies today
These are actually the top rookies
We feel that these are the top 10 rookies
And we're gonna be talking about
At least one major flaw
That they can improve upon
Going into next season
Because with a lot of these players
We can sit here and harp on what they do great
All of these players
To be in the top of their class
Obviously they do a lot of things great
On the basketball court
But if we want to see these players excel
Maybe get to that all star level
Maybe help propel their teams
Into the playoffs next year
They're gonna have to improve upon something
And that's what we're gonna be talking about today
So for the first rookie
That we're gonna be talking about today
We're gonna be discussing Cole Anthony
Of the Orlando Magic
Alright now
Cole Anthony's flaw to fix
Is his defense
Anthony came on strong late
For Orlando
Averaging 16.2 points per game
5.1 rebounds
4.2 assists in his final 17 games of the season
His defense
As is the case for most rookie guards
Left a lot to be desired
Continuing to learn
Player tendencies will help
But a wingspan under 6'5
May mean he'll never become
An elite defender in the NBA
The Magic allowed a whopping
118.3 points per 100
Processions
With Anthony on the floor
And 112.8 with him off
And opponents shot 46.3%
From the 3 point line
With him as a primary defender
Increase of
7.1%
Over their season
Average
And for this Orlando Magic team
Players like Jonathan Isaac coming back from injury
I'm sure that this team will improve defensively
But it's gonna have to start
With these young players
And we all know how important perimeter defense
Is in this league
So I definitely look forward to seeing how
Cole Anthony recovers
And bounces back next year
And I really look forward to seeing the direction that
The Orlando Magic take going into next season
With all of those young guys
Sadiq Bae's flaw to fix
Is gonna be
Isolation scoring
The 5th leading scorer
Among all rookies at 12.2 points per game
Bae has been a steal
For the Pistons as the 19th overall pick
Some evolution
To his offensive game
Would serve Detroit well however
2 out of every 3 shots
That Sadiq Bae took this season
Were from outside the arc
With a whopping 92.6%
Of his 3's coming off an assist
Per NBA.com
Tracking data
Sadiq Bae logged just 41 total
Isolation possessions all season
Scoring at a lowly mark
Of .5%
Of the time per possession
He shot just 21.4%
In isolation
And ranked in the 13.3%
Overall
A talented 3 point shooter
However Sadiq Bae needs to continue
To grow his offensive game
And we saw the flashes
With Sadiq Bae
With Detroit
Just a couple weeks ago
We saw him have a breakout first quarter
His 6.3's in the first quarter
We know he's an elite shooter
But this Detroit team
That really needs players to find a way to score
Outside of the offense
They need players to be able to score
And transition getting to the rim
They're going to need a guy like Sadiq Bae
To really develop his offensive game
Over the summer
Hopefully he can come back next season
With a few more moves in his repertoire
And I think really playmaking and scoring
Off of plays like that really comes with confidence
So I think we saw him have that in his bag
A little bit at Villanova
I think this is something that he can do
Maybe next year he can come in
With a bit more confidence
To really take and make those shots
Out of the isolation sets
Alright the next player we have up
On our list is Emmanuel
Quigley-Gart for the New York Knicks
Emmanuel Quigley
To fix his shot selection
And getting to the basket
We saw late in the season that Tom Thibodeau
Decided to bench Emmanuel Quigley
Because of his poor
Decision making and shot selection
Now Quigley showcased
A beautiful floater and was very good
From outside to arc this season
Shooting 38.9%
From threes overall
And 46.6%
On catch and shoot shots
But he'll need to improve
His ability to get to the basket
And complete his offensive development
Only 5.9%
Of his total shot attempts came within 3 feet
Of the basket with an average
Shot distance of about 18 feet
Killing his overall
Efficiency Quigley was able to
Convert 61.8%
Of his close looks
Yet shot just
39.5%
Overall during his rookie campaign
I think adding muscle
To his 6'3, 190
Pound frame it should help him
Absorb more contact
And hopefully get him some easier looks
At the rim going into next season
Now Isaiah Stewart's
Flaw to fix is his lack of a dominant
Skill you know even as a
19 year old rookie
There were a few holes
In Stewart's game he led all rookies
In rebounds per game blocks
And win shares all while
Showcasing a solid overall
Game Stewart showcased
And showed the ability to
Protect the rim finish
In the pick and roll and even shoot threes
At a decent clip finding
A dominant skill will help him stick
In the piston starting
Lineup from here on out
And guarantee he gets paid
Come extension time
Stewart is essentially
Good at almost everything
But not great at any
One specific area
Jason Tate's flaw to fix
Is three point shooting
You know perhaps the most versatile
Rookie in this particular class
The 25 year old Tate played
And defended up to four
Different positions on any given night
The 6'4 wing slash
Big did have a
Rough season shooting the ball knocking
Down just 20% of his pull up
Threes while converting on 30%
Off catch and shoot
His overall mark of 30%
Was lower than
Rookie centers like James Wiseman
Isaiah Stewart and even
Xavier Tillman
Tate's shooting mechanics are solid enough
That he should improve
Through simple repetition
But we hope to see this rookie
Really excel coming into next year
As the Houston Rockets
Bolster this roster
For a much better
Campaign next season
Now James Wiseman's flaw to fix
Is ultimately just confidence
James Wiseman was
The anti Isaiah Stewart
This season while he
Wowed at times with his size
And skill the sizzle
Always seemed to
Be greater than the stake
The Warriors were absolutely dreadful
In his minutes
Getting beat by 16.7 points
Per 100 processions
With him on the court
Per cleaning glass
That figure ranked in the second percentile
Among all players
It was painfully obvious how much better
The Warriors were this season
With Looney on the floor
Instead of the number 2 overall draft pick
Which was Wiseman
Too often when Wiseman
Made a mistake his body language
Would immediately sour
With his shoulders slumping
And a look of frustration on the thin
Teenager's face
Golden State's veteran Draymond Green
Told Dubstalk that he's already
Taken notice of some of these issues
He even stated to Wiseman
Enjoy the lumps that he takes
It's all a part of the process
And while taking those lumps
He needs to stay confident
One thing people don't talk about
When speaking
Of the NBA
Is confidence and when you lose confidence
In this league
You can forget about having any success
And that was Draymond Green
On James Wiseman
Now with Wiseman
Likely unable to do much physically
This summer while recovering from knee surgery
He can still digest plenty
Of film and improve the mental
Aspect of the game
He ranked 6th among rookies in scoring
3rd in rebounding
Wiseman can still develop
Into a dominant two way force
If his confidence continues
To grow
And as we get to some of these top rookies
Of this class
When we talk about players like James Wiseman
I really want you guys really put in the live chat
Or the comments of this video
Your thoughts on these players as well
Because that's one thing that I also
The one thing that I noticed about Wiseman's game
And Draymond Green pointed it out
He showed flashes that he had
Everything in the bag that he needed
To be a great center
He showed a really great jump shot
With really good form and patience
He showed great athleticism
When we've seen him dunk over the entire team
At times
But then when he made mistakes
It just gave off the impression
That he just harped on his mistakes too much
And I think that's one thing that really
Hurt him this season
Really hurt his effectiveness
On top of the fact that there was no preseason
No summer league as we mentioned earlier
Before he just came into this league
After most recently playing
Juco College players
At Memphis and then high school players
He came into this league playing grown men
And I just don't think
I think he didn't know how he would fit in
I don't think he trusted
His skill set and he didn't know
You know what to expect going in
So I think next year
I think we're going to see the biggest leap
From a player like James Wiseman
Because now he's acclimated to the NBA
He knows what to expect
Hopefully he can recover from that knee surgery
And get back to being 100%
Alright next player up
Is Patrick Williams
Of the Chicago Bulls
Now Patrick
Williams flaw to
Fix is playmaking
Patrick Williams
He started all 71 games for the Bulls
This season after zero starts
For Florida State the year before
And silenced any questions
About his three point shooting
Going 39.1%
From behind the arc this year
Now for someone who won't turn 20
Until August
Williams showed some really positive
Signs overall the Bulls may need
To take
One more of a facilitating role
However
Especially if the team fails to acquire
A franchise point guard this off season
He will need to be
A better playmaker going into next season
Williams finished the season with just
99 total assists
And that's compared to
His 98 turnovers
So we want to see a better assist to turnover ratio
There as he showed during his
Florida State days Williams is
Athletic and crafty enough to become
At least an above average passer
And running through plays
And running plays through him would help
Set the table for guys like Zach Levine
Vucevic and even Colby White
For a Bulls team that ranked just
20th overall in assist to turnover
Ratio this season
Some added playmaking from Williams
Would do wonders
For this 21st ranked offense
And you know what
For me with regards to Patrick
Williams I really just have to give Patrick
Williams a big round of applause
Because I think where the Bulls selected
Him in the draft with so many unknowns
Coming out of Florida State
As you guys just heard
The man didn't even start a game for Florida State
You know I question if
This was a good
You know a good draft for the
Chicago Bulls a good draft pick
And he actually turned out to be really serviceable
Didn't pay a lot of dividends this year
But I think this player
Patrick Williams will prove
To be a very
Formidable piece for
The Chicago Bulls over the next
Four to five years
So next up on our
List we have
Tyrese Halliburton of the Sacramento
Kings
Tyrese Halliburton's flaw
To fix is going to be
Aggressiveness
Tyrese Halliburton has been
The NBA's best
Rookie surprise as not
Anyone outside
Of Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball have been
Better he finished third among rookies
In scoring 13 points a game
Second in assists 5.3
And second in steals
Halliburton was the only first year
Player to shoot better than 40% from the
Three point line while averaging
Double digits in scoring
While it was natural for him
To take a backseat to players like
De'Aaron Fox, Buddy Hield and even
Harrison Barnes
The 21 year old has earned the right to
Demand the ball and take on more
Of a leadership role
With this Sacramento team
Halliburton even explained this to the
Athletic Halliburton stated
That's just
The staff and the vets
Like you know Moe Harkless you know they're on me
To go get the ball be aggressive and lead
The team I'm getting great words of
Wisdom every day learning
More every day and I think at the end
Of the day like we all
Talk about my development
To go in the right direction
I've got to be more vocal be a
Leader and just have fun playing basketball
Forced to play
Small ball with Fox
And Buddy Hield in the backcourt at times
Halliburton would benefit
From a Hield trade
But
At this point in time they have Buddy
Hield Halliburton is going to have to relegate
To playing that small forward position in the backcourt
While the Kings draft history
Over the past decade hasn't really
Been kind Halliburton
Was a home run pick
Who needs to know it's okay
To act like it so we
Want to see Tyrese Halliburton really
Step up and be much more aggressive
Going into next year's
Campaign and for
Tyrese Halliburton
This is a player and we know he has
A lot of promise because there was a portion of this
Season where he was neck and neck
With LaMelo Ball for rookie of the year a lot of
People were saying he was just as good
He kind of fell off obviously the
Injury and obviously
Just being on the Sacramento Kings
Not a very successful team they weren't really
In the playoff race a lot of expectations
That they didn't live up to
Hopefully a coaching change
Over the summer can help
Bring that aggressiveness back that we would
Like to see but as it stands now
He still had a great rookie campaign and he
Surprised a lot of people
You know a lot of people coming
Into this season
Next up we have
Anthony Edwards
Of the Minnesota Timberwolves
Anthony Edwards
Flaw to fix easily is
Pick and roll efficiency
Anthony Edwards has looked the part
As the number one overall pick this
Seeding leading all rookies in scoring
At 19.3 points per game
What's even
More encouraging is the success
That he has had
Alongside Carl Anthony Townsend and
D'Angelo Russell the Wolves young
Core they carry a net rating
Of plus
4.9 and
327 total
Minutes while Edwards has been
A dynamic scorer and maybe one of the
Leagues best in game dunkers
He needs to get better
As a ball handler in the pick and roll
The Wolves Edwards
In the pick and roll
6.4 times per
Game and he only
And he counted for 31%
Of the offense so a lot of the things that he was
Doing or coming out of transition or
Iso sets not really going to be
Conducive to a lot of success right there
Now Towns
Is the type of
Athletic floor spacing big
Whom Minnesota should be
Killing teams with in the pick and roll every night
So by seeing
Edwards get better in the pick and roll
It's only going to help all of the
Other players on the team
He's a terrific three point shooter who can
Pick and pop or stride to the
Rim and dunk on opponents head
Following a perfect pass
Becoming an improved pick and roll
Facilitator usually means
Getting more reps and
Becoming more comfortable with the players
Around you it also means
Reading a defense and taking
Whatever it gives you
All areas in which Edwards continues
To get better
And we all know the rookie of the year race
Is going to come down between
Anthony Edwards and the
One thing that I really appreciated about
Anthony Edwards game this year
Is that he took a lot of criticism
Even criticism from his teammates and coaches
And he took it in stride and he did not
Let that get to his ego
And he just continued to improve his game
And when we saw players
Whether it was suspension or injury
Go down for the Minnesota Timberwolves
He really stepped up
And at times looked to be the leader
Of that team even more so than a guy
Like Karl-Anthony Towns
So I'm really surprised, I'm really curious to see the direction
That they decide to go next year
Because they've had Karl-Anthony Towns for a number of years now
And it doesn't look to be
Going in a positive direction
Do the Timberwolves move on from
Karl-Anthony Towns and look to give
Anthony Edwards a bigger role on this team?
I mean you never know
But the Minnesota Timberwolves, the one thing that they know
For certain is they have a golden player
In Anthony Edwards that they can look to build off of
Going into the future
Next up we have
Obviously the final rookie
That we need to discuss
We have LaMelo Ball
Of the Charlotte Hornets
LaMelo Ball's flaw to fix
Is going to be off
Ball engagement
LaMelo Ball would have been
The runaway rookie of the year if not
For late season wrist surgery
And is still in the running
For the award despite playing
21 fewer games than Anthony Edwards
Ball was everything
Charlotte could have hoped for in year one
Already one of the league's craftiest
Passers, Ball showed off
A solid outside shot shooting
35.2% from the
Field
37% before the surgery
An area of concern coming
Into the NBA. The Hornets have
Plenty of facilitators however
With Terry Rozier, Gordon Hayward
And Devontae Graham who's going to be a
Restricted free agent
All able to run the offense
At times very well
Using the 6'6 ball as a cutter
More often would help get
Some easy baskets and take some of the
Playmaking responsibility off of
The 19 year old. Ball
Was only used as a cutter
14 times all season
Shooting 33%
Per possession
On this type of offensive
Set. This kind of efficiency
Ranked in the 3rd percentile
Overall. Ball was the type
Of frame that
Ball has a type of frame that enables him
To use a multitude of ways
To score and pass
Not just as a primary
Facilitator. While passing
Will always be LaMelo Ball's greatest
Skill. The Hornets can
Get even more creative
With him offensively
In year two if they can
Find ways to implement
His skill sets off
Ball. Alright and with a player
Like LaMelo Ball there's really not a lot
Of negatives you really want to harp on with
A guy like that. He did so much
Well for the Charlotte Hornets this year
I mean at one point in time the Charlotte Hornets
Were sitting at the number 4 spot in the Eastern Conference
And that's prior to him getting injured
And not just him getting injured. You got guys like
Gordon Hayward went down. Devontae Graham
Went down. Malik Monk
Went down. P.J. Washington
Went down with injury. And so when you have
A myriad of injuries like that
Not just to
Your star players but even your bench players
I mean there was no way
That this Charlotte Hornets team was going to be able to maintain
And hold on to that lead
The way they ended the season really just was
A kind of a summary of what this
Team truly looked
Like with all of those devastating injuries
And they lost the last five games of
The season and then
In that play-in game they got completely
Decimated by the Indiana Pacers
So that just tells you one
Thing. I mean you want to look
To some of these core guys that you have
Obviously Gordon Hayward was a bright spot when healthy
But he is often injured
We have Terry Rozier. Does he fit?
Is he a long-term piece?
Devontae Graham. Are you looking to keep him?
We saw how they struggled defensively
With him in the lineup at times
So the Charlotte Hornets have a lot of questions
That need to be answered with regards to the
Roster. What are they going to be putting around
LaMelo Ball? Because LaMelo Ball at times
Looked like he essentially had to do everything
For this team. You know, rebound,
Defend, play-make, score
That's too much
For a guard in this league. He's
Going to need better help around him
I say better quality help around him
And so the Charlotte Hornets are really going to
Have to find ways to get
Some free agents into Charlotte
To help build a more competitive team for
LaMelo Ball going forward in the future
But those are our top rookies. I think
My expectation
Is that Anthony Edwards will
Win rookie of the year
I think Anthony Edwards will
Only win rookie of the year by default
Because he played more games
And especially how he came on late season
I think LaMelo Ball was the best
Rookie of this season
Unfortunately that injury
Losing 21 games. It's going to be
Really tough for him to win rookie of the year
Now we have seen them give out
Co-rookie of the year awards. It's rare
But it would make sense
In this particular case because I think both of those
Players truly deserve
That honor and make a really really
Strong case for it. But I want you
Guys to let me know what you think about all of
These rookies. What do you expect from
These players going into next year?
I expect the Charlotte Hornets
To be a very competitive
Playoff team next year if they can stay healthy
But that's just
You know that's putting a lot of weight
On a guy like Gordon Hayward. Your
100 million dollar man to stay
Healthy all year
And help this team be competitive
When he went down
We saw how
This Charlotte Hornets team struggled
Similar to
The Minnesota Timberwolves
They lost a lot of players to injury
To suspensions
There was also rumors in that locker room
That they were dealing with a lot of selfishness
What is that team going to look like next year?
Did they keep D'Angelo Russell?
Did they move on from him? He's often injured
Carl Anthony Towns often
Injured himself and when he does play
It seems like his stats are very empty
And they don't really have a major impact
On winning or losing
But Anthony Edwards stats do
So we got a lot
To look forward to next year
As it stands right now we still have the NBA
Playoffs to really look forward to
I can't wait to see some of these
Matchups. We're going to be doing a live stream
To cover all of that coming up pretty
Soon here. If not tonight then tomorrow
But tonight's game
Golden State Warriors vs Memphis Grizzlies
That's going to end all the play-in games
So obviously we're going to be
Covering that game. We're probably going to drop
An NBA film study on that as well
And hopefully
The few rookies that are
Remaining. The ones on this list that are in the playoffs
When we look at our
OB Toppin
Obviously Danny Avodagi is down with injury
Otherwise he would still be in
Hopefully we can still see some
Glimpses from some of the remaining rookies
Here in the playoffs
You guys let me know in the comments what you think
About this rookie clash. Were you
Impressed? Did they overachieve?
Did they underachieve?
I personally believe that this rookie class
Definitely overachieved. A lot of people said
Including myself and I'll throw myself into that
Bubble. I thought this rookie class
Would not be
Not be very strong
And I also believe that because
Of the
Quickness and how the season started I thought a lot
Of these rookies wouldn't be prepared so they came in
Much more prepared and ready to go
Than I even
Expected. But hey
