While Dr. Ben Carson exposed the truth about Trump & the possibility of becoming his VP, Julien Assange finally won the right to challenge his extradition to the United States.
Hello all you freedom-loving people. Welcome to another episode of Front Page. I'm your host Scott Cameron Goulet.
Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi was confirmed dead after a plane crash. So how will this change the situation in Iran?
President Trump had a busy weekend.
He traveled to his son's graduation and then to Texas to attend the NRA's annual convention.
The impression of President Trump is that he's a forceful leader.
But Dr. Ben Carson, a former member of the Trump administration, says that President Trump does not want to be surrounded by yes-men.
Legislators in California have been proposing compensation for blacks throughout the last year. The amount of compensation per person
has risen from a few hundred thousand dollars to two hundred million dollars.
But it's all just lip service because the state of California is running out of money. It's graduation season. At the end,
we'll take a look at an unusual graduation ceremony and
Julian Assange finally won the right to challenge his extradition to the United States. Okay, let's get into it.
A helicopter carrying a number of officials including Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi and the foreign minister
suffered a crash landing on Sunday.
They were returning from a visit to Azerbaijan when the accident occurred while crossing a mountainous area in heavy fog.
State media said that the helicopter crashed in a rural forest. At least 40 rescue teams were deployed including drones and search dogs.
However, rescue work was further complicated by the incremental weather.
Emergency crews were not able to reach the scene of the incident on Sunday due to heavy fog.
Eight ambulances were dispatched to the crash site because fog was preventing air rescue.
The semi-official Fars News Agency urged Iranians to pray for Raisi,
but many celebrated instead. A few hours later, Iran's vice-president said that the rescue team had made contact with the helicopter,
but the signal was immediately cut off. The Iranian military said that it had identified the exact location of the helicopter,
but fog and adverse weather conditions with localized rain prevented the rescue team from locating the helicopter on Sunday.
Rescue teams searched for the crashed helicopter overnight in rugged terrain breathing a blizzard.
They arrived at the wreckage site in the East Azerbaijan province early this morning.
Iranian official media reported that there were no indications of survivors. Under Western sanctions,
Iranian airplanes face a shortage of spare parts and often fly without safety checks.
Because of this, the former Iranian foreign minister tried to blame the United States for the crash in an interview today.
He said, one of the main culprits of yesterday's tragedy is the United States.
Which embargoed the sale of aircraft and aviation parts to Iran and does not allow the people of Iran to enjoy good
aviation facilities. These will be recorded in the list of U.S. crimes against the Iranian people.
Raisi, who was 63, was elected in 2021 with a record low turnout.
He was not the most powerful person in Iran.
He was not the most powerful president in Iranian history either. In general, he was considered one of the weakest presidents.
He was a middle-ranking cleric and hardliner who showed unconditional loyalty to Supreme Leader Ayatollah
Khamenei, who is the ultimate authority in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Khamenei has the final say on foreign policy and on Iran's nuclear program.
Unlike his predecessor, the mild-mannered former president Hassan Rouhani,
Raisi had forged a close alliance with Khamenei.
Many Iranians believe that Raisi was being groomed to succeed the ailing 85-year-old Khamenei.
He helped oversee the mass
execution of thousands in 1988. He later presided over a brutal crackdown on
anti-government protests. Since taking office, he ordered a tightening of morality laws and he pushed hard for nuclear
negotiations with world powers. Now that Raisi is dead,
Khamenei confirmed on X that Mohammad Mokhber,
Iran's vice president, will be president. Khamenei announced that Mokhber
would cooperate with the other branches to facilitate the election of the next president within the next 50 days.
Another national leader, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, is no longer in a life-threatening condition
after an attempted assassination last Wednesday. On Sunday,
Robert Kullinac, the country's deputy prime minister and defense minister, updated the media on the status of Fico at a press conference
outside a hospital where Fico is being treated.
He said, the worst of what we feared has passed, at least for the moment.
But his condition remains serious. His condition is stable with a positive prognosis.
Fico, who is 59, was shot in the abdomen as he greeted supporters on Wednesday.
Video showed Fico approached people who were gathered at barricades and he reached out to shake hands as a man stepped forward and fired
five rounds before being tackled and arrested. On Friday, Fico underwent two hours of surgery for his gunshot wounds,
but he was not healthy enough to be transferred to the Capitol. The shooting was the first major
assassination attempt against a European political leader in more than two decades.
Political analysts and lawmakers say that it exposes an increasingly fanatical and polarized political climate in
Slovakia and across Europe. The suspect in the assassination is 71 years old.
He's a former security guard at a shopping center and the author of three books of poetry.
President Trump addressed thousands of the National Rifle Association members for the ninth time on Saturday at their annual meeting in Texas.
President Trump urged gun owners to vote in the coming election.
President Trump said, we've got to get gun owners to vote.
I think you're a rebellious bunch, but let's be rebellious and vote this time.
We need the Second Amendment for safety. Forget about going hunting and all the things you do.
We need it for safety because you know, the bad guys are not giving up their guns.
The bad ones are not giving up their guns. If the Democrats are in power for another four years,
they are coming for your guns, 100% certain. However, when President Trump is in the White House, that will be a different story.
But with me in the White House, the radical gun grabbers
will run straight into a very, very powerful brick wall.
Their dreams of taking away your God-given rights will die when the polls close on November 5th, 2024.
Those dreams that they have will be dead.
They will be dead dreams.
Randy Kozik, the chairman and executive director of the National Rifle Association's lobbying arm,
announced the endorsement of the NRA for President Trump.
As the chairman of the NRA, PVF, it is my honor to announce our endorsement of the 45th
and soon-to-be 47th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump.
President Trump expressed his gratitude for the NRA's longtime support for him.
The NRA has stood with me from the very beginning, and with your vote, I will stand strong for your
rights and liberties. And for more years in the White House, we're going to do things like nobody
can believe. We're going to turn our country around. We're going to, quite simply, make America great
again. President Joe Biden, meanwhile, traveled to Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday. Atlanta is one of
the cities with a large percentage of Blacks. Democrats are trying to win the votes of young
Black males. Ben Carson, who served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Trump
administration, said in an interview on Sunday that President Trump doesn't like to be surrounded
by yes-men. This is what he mentioned on CNN's State of the Union program. The host asked about
the conversation between Carson and President Trump about abortion laws. Carson has said in
the past that he supports national legislation on abortion. He disagrees with President Trump
on this issue. President Trump said last month that after Roe v. Wade was overturned, abortion
laws should be left to the states. Carson suggested that President Trump doesn't ask those people
around him to be subservient to him. Carson said President Trump does not like to surround
himself with yes-people and he likes to have healthy discussions about things and recognize
that in terms of saving the lives of the unborn, he has done more than any other president, so I
give him much credit for that. And Carson agrees with President Trump's proposal now to let states
decide abortion laws. Carson said, I think I agree completely with his idea of shifting it to
the states and the reason that it should be shifted to the states is because the discussions can take
place between the legislators and the people. That's where it's supposed to be. That's where
it should have been in the first place. Carson was the first to announce his endorsement for
President Trump shortly after ending his own presidential primary in 2016, despite initial
speculation that he could be President Trump's vice presidential pick. He was eventually appointed
to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Currently, Carson is making his
third strong endorsement of President Trump's bid for the White House. Carson said on Sunday that he
hasn't discussed being President Trump's running mate with him, though he is willing to debate with
Vice President Harris. Carson said, I would certainly be willing to discuss policies. The difference is,
you know, we have a unique situation where you can juxtapose two different administrations with
different philosophies and people can see how that one feels versus how did the other feel.
And I would love to debate with her or with anyone. The much-hyped California reparations
for blacks plan is dead. The California House of Representatives voted on Thursday to pass a bill
formally apologizing for its role in slavery. But the much-anticipated reparations plan has been put
on hold indefinitely because the state is running out of money and now faces a $45 billion budget
deficit. Drafting the apology bill was Representative Reggie Jones Sawyer, a Democrat from Los Angeles.
He introduced AB 3089, which passed the House unanimously. But this bill is only an apology
and does not include compensation. Jones Sawyer said on the Assembly floor, not only is the
apology letter important, it's what we do after. It's whether or not we go ahead and fulfill the
dream of what my ancestors wanted, which is to fully make us part of the American dream.
Less than an hour later, the most important parts of the reparation for blacks program,
cash reparations and tax exemptions, among other things, were rejected by a key finance committee
as the state deals with a huge budget deficit. In the wake of the 2020 George Floyd incident
in Minnesota, California Governor Gavin Newsom was the first to propose reparations for blacks.
As the program's profile grew, so did the amount of reparations. The initial demand was for $223,000
per black person for housing discrimination. Then it was suggested that $223,000 was not enough and
that $360,000 per person was required. Soon $360,000 wasn't enough and it went straight to
$800,000 because that is the average price of housing in California. Then even $800,000 was
not sufficient. At the hearing held last May, the working group finalized the amount of $1.2 million
per person. In fact, the activists who attended the hearing were still not satisfied and they
demanded $200 million each. They stated that this was based on the 40 acres of land that was promised
by the government in 1860, plus a mule converted to the current amount. The program has caused
outrage online with over 59% of voters in an anonymous poll opposing the bill. Even California
Governor Gavin Newsom has refused to support the reparations program now. There are many who do not
support the apology bill that was passed on Thursday. One of the most important points is that
when California joined the union in 1850, it did so as a non-slaveholding state. Legally speaking,
there was no systemic slavery in California at the time of its founding, so where does the apology
come in? It is many people's opinion that even if there was a smattering of farmers who kept black
slaves in captivity, it's only the descendants of those farmers who should apologize to the blacks.
It has nothing to do with anyone else. There have also been comments from the public that in
California the people who deserve an apology are the Japanese because we put them in concentration
camps and the Chinese because we exploited their labor in building the railroads. The University
of Massachusetts Dartmouth class of 2024 undergraduates not only received their diplomas
at their graduation ceremony but also a generous gift from the commencement speaker, $1,000 in cash.
The generous commencement speaker is Robert Hale Jr. He is the founder and CEO of Granite
Telecommunications which is headquartered in Quincy. He is also a member of the Boston Celtics
ownership group. His net worth is estimated at $5.4 billion. Hale spoke about his career including
losing a billion dollars almost overnight. He urged students not to let failure define them
and he himself is an example of a man who has faced life with resilience. He told the graduates
that for him and his wife the greatest joy in their lives is giving.
My lovely wife is here supporting. We decided after this talk of giving let's act on giving.
As I mentioned if you have pledged your time you should be celebrating. We want to celebrate with
you. The graduation ceremony was held in pouring rain. When Hale told the students that each student
would receive $1,000 in cash the crowd erupted. Each of you is getting $1,000 cash.
Of course the $1,000 is not entirely for the students themselves. Graduates can keep $500
as a gift while the other $500 has to benefit someone else in need or charity or a cause of
their choice. Hale said our community and our world need our help now more than ever.
According to the university the envelopes were handed out to roughly 1,200 students in the class
of 2024. There was another graduation ceremony that also drew attention but the attention was
on the parents who were attending the graduation, President Trump and his wife Melania. They happily
attended their youngest son Barron's high school graduation on Friday at Oxbridge Academy in West
Palm Beach Florida. This is the proud father cheering on his 18 year old son. The high
court has ruled that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange can appeal against extradition to the U.S.
He was granted permission to appeal against the order to send him to the U.S. to stand trial
for leaking military secrets. Assange will now be able to challenge U.S. assurances about how his
future trial would be conducted and whether his right to free speech would be violated.
Following this latest ruling in the legal saga Assange's lawyers hugged each other. They have
argued that the case against Assange is politically motivated. On May 19th in a short morning ruling
two senior judges granted Assange permission to appeal against an earlier order. They ruled that
he should be given a full appeal in the U.K. Assange has resisted extradition for more than
a decade. This is after his WikiLeaks website published thousands of confidential U.S. documents
in 2010 and 2011. Assange who is currently in Belmarsh prison will now have months to prepare
his appeal. As an Australian citizen he will be concerned about whether or not the U.S. courts will
protect his right to free speech. He argues that his disclosure in 2010 reveals U.S. war crimes.
The file suggests that the U.S. military killed civilians in unreported incidents during the
Afghanistan war. However U.S. authorities say that Assange endangered lives by failing to redact
intelligence operative names in the documents. And that's a wrap for this episode. Thank you
