We finally our new garden table and chairs and we couldn’t be more pleased with how they turned out.
Back in September last year (8 months ago) we decided to change our rattan furniture which we’d have for about 8 years for something different as it was beginning to show its age and had started to split and go brittle in places.
I really loved the look of the “conversation area” seating in Linda Vater’s newly renovated back garden and thought I’d love to recreate that idea for our paved patio area.
We looked online and because garden furniture is incredibly expensive, Richard decided to make our furniture himself.
We found 8 secondhand cast iron bench sides at our local antiques centre - Battlesbridge in Essex, cleaned them up and spray painted them black.
Richard bought wood from our local hardware store, cut them to the size he wanted for the slats for the seat, drilled a hole in each end and painted them with clear varnish.
Then in was just a case of fixing the slats into the pre-made holes on the bench ends with heavy duty nuts and bolts.
We were so fortunate to find the cast iron table on Facebook Marketplace and we ordered a piece of toughened glass from a shop we found on eBay.
Richard saved us a fortune by making the furniture himself. Total cost for all 4 chairs was £180 and total cost for the table was £95, so that’s £275 for the complete set.
We are absolutely delighted with the finished result and I hope you like it too!

hi everyone it's Janette here
enthusiastic Gardener I'm here in my
garden in my dressing gown at the end of
a Sunday evening because we have
finished the chairs and the table and
it's all here and we're sitting out at
the end of the day with all the lights
on because it's just so beautiful we um
have finished the chairs it's taken
about 3
weeks of different stages and taking it
slow and Richard has done a fantastic
job so I'm going to hand over to Richard
now and you can see how he's made the
chairs and we'll show them to you at the
end and we are very happy hope you enjoy
today's
video okay lovely sunny morning so
instead of resting like one should be
I'm going to start on the
chairs
um they need to be sanded down and
cleansed and then SP black
on these ones here I've got get the
angle going that and cut all these nuts
off and start again
and you can see we have some strange
things hanging on the line these are the
slats which are going to be the part
that you sit
on and they're hanging on the line
because he painted them with
varnish and so now they're dry
in and we're going to leave those wooden
slats hanging all night because it's
been such a beautiful day we're not
expecting any
rain all the chairs have been spray
painted the chair ends so that's good
they're all
done and we have the wood coming in for
the the
seats here's some of the
wood which has been cut to size and
varnished and which has just brought the
other
wood that's
it ready for the next
stage and what a lovely morning
right this is another stage towards
getting the chairs sorted out and I've
got my assistant this morning yes who's
came out this morning dressed exactly
like me let me show
you we always seem to have the same
colors on don't we I could come home
from a day at work and then we look at
each other we both got like black and
white stripes for example which was the
other day wasn't it so this isn't team
colors
right next lot of
Timber I need to cut them down to this
W
yep then once I've done that then I will
drill the holes yeah ready for the nuts
and
bolts cuz I all did the V size yep but
they're they're coming on Wednesday or
Thursday so by then this will be cut up
drilled and
varnished ready now because I've got an
assistance this
morning I going to keep them banded
together leveled up and un
cut six pieces at one time so that'll
speed it up

but what I'm doing
now is ding the holes this is one from
the first batch so I'm just using that
as a template the bottom
one isn't it's a spare bit of Timber the
reason you have a bit of Timber
underneath so that it
doesn't spray split all the do spray out
yes
[Music]
[Music]
see it's a nice clean
hole
two another
two line up the
ends come through yeah come
through there
fabulous another 20 to
go I've cut all slats to the requireed
width now on the
chair over
there the last two
slats CES on the
curve what I need to do on these
ones is
just take the take the edge off just to
round them out a bit
[Applause]
ni
Smo that's lovely that's just taking the
edge off so that doesn't graze her naked
legs it's a week later we are nearly
there everyone we're at the final hurdle
you can see see these are the second
batch of slats which are have been
varnished and drying on my cloth
horse you can see the holes all the way
along this is the
inside of the chair arm so there are
already holes there very
self-explanatory we have the
holes at the correct
places and then we have these
screws these screws go through and then
backs of the screws go on the back and
then tighten it up um with one of
these by hand and then finally um just
tighten them with the drill

ordered the glass which is quite
thick I think you can
see I absolutely I love
it I don't know which chair to sit
in well the job is complete I'm standing
here in my dressing G that's how nice at
evening it is U yes eventually got the
job done and I'm very pleased with the
outcome and Janet is happy so if Janet
is Happy everybody's happy
I hope you enjoyed today's video which
has actually taken us about 3 weeks to
film in total with all the different
stages unfortunately there are no links
to anything that you'd be able to buy
they're all reclaimed and repurposed
things the chair legs were from
battlesbridge our local antiques Center
the table was from Facebook Marketplace
we did buy the glass top from a shop on
eBay
we bought the spray paint the black
spray paint from Amazon we already had
the varnish for the wood we bought the
nuts and bolts from
Amazon but we're very pleased I did put
the price on the video of the cost that
everything was so much cheaper than
buying new
well we're delighted
anyway and thank you for watching I hope
you're all having fun in your
Gardens it's almost summer well June the
21st I
believe so I hope you're all having a
great week in your
Gardens wherever you may be thank you
