September 11 was certainly not the first time that the American nation has seen itself dragged into war by a particularly ambiguous incident.
The American Constitution does not allow the United States to start any war of aggression,
and reserves the only Parliament the power to declare war on another nation, in case it becomes necessary to defend itself.
For this reason, every time an American president wanted to take part in a war or start a new one,
he had to use a military incident, created or provoked, to justify in some way the armed intervention against the Parliament and the population.
In 1898, the United States waged war on Spain to deprive it of control of Cuba, essential for the control of the entire Gulf of Mexico.
The pretext for war came from the sinking of the military ship Maine, anchored off the coast of Cuba,
of which the Spaniards were immediately blamed, despite the fact that they declared themselves completely strangers.
The images of the semi-sunk ship and those of the funerals of the sailors were shown in the first newspapers of the time,
generating in the country a state of indignation enough to start a war,
which in the meantime the future President Roosevelt, then Minister of the Navy, had prepared up to the smallest detail.
Only in 1980, almost a century later, the Americans would have recognized that the Spaniards were not responsible for the attack,
saying, however, not to self-accuse, that the Maine was sunk because some explosives had been dumped too close to the boilers.
In the meantime, the entire Spanish army had been destroyed, and so the Americans became the new world naval power,
with strategic positions ranging from the Caribbean to the Philippines.
In 1915, it was the sinking of Lusitania by a German submarine that started the crisis between the United States and Germany,
which allowed the first to enter the world conflict.
It seems that the Americans had made known in secret to the Germans that on Lusitania
an important load of weapons intended for England was traveling.
In this way, they would have been able to provoke the attack by the German submarine,
which sank the ship on which also traveled a hundred American citizens.
In 1941, it was the well-known Pearl Harbor attack that unleashed in the American population
that wave of indignation that allowed Roosevelt to enter decisively into the Second World War against Japan, Italy and Germany.
About 3,000 sailors were massacred in a surprise attack,
of which it would have been known later that the Americans had been on the move for many hours.
But on that occasion, everything was done so that this information did not arrive in time at the port command,
as was later confirmed by Admiral Kimmel,
who had assisted the impotent in the massacre of his men and the destruction of his ships.
In 1964, the United States decided to officially enter into war with North Vietnam,
after having helped the South Vietnam for many years without ever intervening directly.
The pretext for war came from the so-called incident of the Gulf of Tonkino,
in which Vietnamese motorboats were accused of having launched torpedoes against the American cruiser Meadows.
It was the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert McNamara,
who gave the press the announcement of the ready American reaction to the Vietnamese attack.
But McNamara himself, 40 years later, would have confessed that the attack of the motorboats
had been an invention to create the necessary pretext to enter into war.
In the meantime, almost 60,000 American soldiers and over 3 million Vietnamese civilians had died.
In 1990, the situation between the United States and Iraq of Saddam Hussein had become tense,
and the team of neoconservatives close to President Bush
convinced the latter of an armed intervention against the Iraqi dictator.
The Americans then informed Saddam that they had nothing against him
if he had taken over the oil fields of Kuwait,
a territory that Iraq had always claimed as its own.
The trap worked, and Saddam invaded Kuwait.
Immediately after, Dick Cheney, who at that time was Minister of Defense,
had satellite photos in Saudi Arabia,
in which 250,000 soldiers of Saddam were seen massacred towards the border of their country.
Fearing an imminent invasion, the Saudis granted the Americans the extraordinary permission
to establish military bases on their territory,
thus making them able to attack Iraq comfortably.
At the same time, a massive media campaign against Saddam began,
which was accused of having used chemical weapons against his Kurdish compatriots,
which the Americans themselves had sold to him,
to then cover up the ongoing genocide with their silence,
even though they were perfectly aware of it.
The media campaign against the Iraqi dictator culminated
with this touching testimony of a young Kuwaiti nurse
who described the atrocities committed by Saddam's soldiers
in the hospitals of her invading country.
The news went around the world,
and at that time no one had anything to laugh about the American bombings in Iran.
A few years later, some journalists were in possession of satellite photos
that had been taken by the Russians in the same desert area,
and in the same days.
The same images, which distinctly showed Iraqi tanks in the center of Kuwait,
also revealed that along the border with Saudi Arabia,
there was absolutely nothing.
Not a vehicle, not a man, not an armed car.
Even the nurse who had shaken the world
turned out to be the daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador to Washington,
who had performed the scene of the bombings,
completely invented, after being trained professionally
by one of the most famous public relations companies in Washington,
the Hill & Knowton.
In the meantime, the Americans had taken advantage of it
to set up permanent bases in Saudi Arabia
and to exterminate the entire Iraqi army.
In a ruthless and vile shooting at the target,
in full violation of all treaties of war ever existed,
thousands of Iraqi soldiers were massacred
and literally burned by American aviation,
while they were completely exposed and unable to escape
on the way back to Baghdad.
Before taking this picture,
the photographer wrote on the side of the tank.
If I don't take this picture,
people like my mother will think that war is what you see on TV.
