Kimbap is a classic Korean snack sold on almost every street corner.
It's cheap, delicious, and was my daily go-to in university year.
Today we're going to taste a local favourite,
and then compare it to the most expensive Michelin-starred kimbap in the world.
This is the food of the people.
Probably one of the most common meals that a Korean could have.
In England, maybe like a sandwich.
Oh, it's smelling good.
Time for some kimbap.
Can you smell it?
It always smells good.
I'm so excited.
Here we go.
Okay, kimbap.
We had this.
Tteokbokki, we had this.
This is the main star of the show.
The star of the show.
Massive rolls.
Massive.
Tuna kimbap, my personal favourite.
A specialty they do here, which is aged kimchi tuna kimbap.
So the kimchi that's been fermented for a bit longer.
Which is this one over here.
It looks beautiful.
Let's dig in.
Tuna kimbap first to see the amount of filling in that.
That's good.
That's a good kimbap.
That's good.
That's a good breakfast.
This is actually really good.
Crunchy, soft, full of flavour.
Not too salty.
Very balanced.
Super easy, right?
I'd do this for breakfast.
Now what's crazy is, yeah,
for somewhere like this,
tuna kimbap here, 4,800 won.
So one of these rolls, about three pounds.
Three pounds?
Oh my god.
I mean it.
You've got carrot, you've got the sweet radish there.
Leg.
Little egg.
Like a well-balanced meal, basically.
And it's clean.
It doesn't taste unhealthy.
You know what I mean?
And like, aged kimchi.
I like the kimchi flavour.
I really like it.
Now you asked, do you dip kimbap in anything?
The only thing I would ever dip kimbap in is tteokbokki.
Little bit of that right there.
Look at that.
Let's try it.
Look at that.
Cheers, mate.
Cheers.
Amazing.
First taste of kimbap in Korea.
So, tteokbokki.
We had this in England.
But I'm pretty sure it's not the same.
This is very different.
Maybe the most common Korean street food.
Completely different.
Let's be honest.
That texture.
That's what it's supposed to be like.
And the spice.
It's way spicier.
Oh yeah, a lot more of a kick, right?
This is just such a home food for me.
Like, so comforting.
Whenever you want just a really quick, really cheap meal.
Yeah.
If you buy this to go as well, you know, wrap it in tinfoil.
Okay.
Like this.
You can literally just peel off each one.
Oh, that's amazing.
Like a burrito.
Almost like a burrito.
Like a Korean burrito, yeah.
That's round one.
For round two, it's actually two Michelin stars.
What?
Korean restaurant.
Belts on.
To be honest, this is a very spacious car.
Really nice.
Excellent car.
Yes.
Oh, it's a beautiful car, right?
Wow.
Cheongshikdang.
Here we are.
Oh my god.
What a place.
This Michelin star restaurant just won the award for best Korean food in Seoul.
And their signature menu item is a luxury kimbap.
What is this?
This was known as the most expensive kimbap in Korea.
This kimbap alone costs 20,000 won, which is roughly a bit less than $20.
That's insane.
For one kimbap.
For something that costs $3.
$3 somewhere else.
That's nearly seven times more.
Yeah.
It's crazy.
Yeah.
And the kimbap this morning was as big as this.
It was very big and very filling.
It's true.
Come back.
Cheers.
Oh wow.
You know how difficult it is to make our seaweed this crispy?
It's so crispy.
It's difficult.
So crispy, really.
It's extremely well made.
Okay, let's try this.
Truffle mayo.
Truffle.
Truffle sauce.
It's so crispy.
It's good.
It's very good, man.
It's very good.
Josh, this is very good.
I did not expect a kimbap to go so far.
Yeah.
It's fascinating because in some ways it's a completely different food.
Yeah.
But in other ways, it is very reminiscent of what we had this morning.
The thing is though, they feel like slightly two different things.
That's exactly what I was thinking.
Is it most expensive?
Well, sure.
But it's also one of the best ones I've ever tried.
Yeah.
Since this morning.
Yeah.
One of the best you've ever tried.
It's the second kimbap you've ever tried.
Third one, third one.
If you count the two different flavors from one store, then yeah, third kimbap.
You know what we're missing?
What's that?
Dakboki sauce.
Dip that in some dakboki sauce.
Do a dakboki mayo instead of a truffle mayo.
If you want to be extreme, a syringe of dakboki sauce, the guest puts inside.
Wow.
That actually sounds really good.
I would do that.
It's really good.
That's a good suggestion.
I want to try that one.
You know what I would love to try?
What?
This seaweed wrap, but only caviar inside.
Okay.
You know it would be insane.
Okay.
So we've had a 5001 kimbap.
We've had a 4001 kimbap.
We've had a 10000 kimbap.
Yep.
However.
It's not over yet.
As of extremely recently, I believe we are the first people to ever record this.
They have added a new item on their menu.
Okay.
A 150,001 kimbap has been added to the menu.
What do you mean?
This is a world exclusive.
The brand new most expensive kimbap in the world.
That's incredible.
And we're trying it.
That is.
It's about 100 pounds.
100 pounds.
I was about to say.
You guys are crazy.
Oh.
Is it a thing?
This is the next kimbap.
With caviar and sea urchin.
And uni.
Yes.
Whoa.
Okay.
Wow.
So this kimbap is filled with rice mixed with sesame oil, soy sauce, and kimchi.
And in the small plate, we have kaluga caviar with the fresh sea urchin from Boston.
You said you wanted caviar and kimbap.
I know.
I did.
I swear.
We did not plan this.
We didn't ask them to change the menu, especially for Mr. Z.
That is incredible.
Literally a few days ago.
Somebody knew I was coming.
They changed their menu and added caviar and sea urchin.
It's a ton of sea urchin.
It's a lot.
So Josh, listen to me.
Yeah.
We're having the world's most expensive kimbap.
I want you to have the bite, but you have to go here.
Yeah.
That's like a 50-pound bite.
Okay.
Gosh, I'm scared.
Okay.
Let's go.
No, stop teasing me.
Okay.
Yes.
I'm gonna assemble one for myself as well.
I can't believe that.
Josh, whatever you're saying right now, I'm pretty sure I'm understanding it.
Wow.
I have never tasted anything like that before in my entire life.
Oh my gosh.
This is like the most seafoody.
It's extremely good.
The most luxury.
The sea urchin talks, screams.
The caviar brings out the flavor of the kim even more.
Oh yeah.
Really?
I love it.
So creamy.
We should clarify that costs roughly 37.5 times
a normal kimbap.
There is no way that it's 37 times as good.
19 times better.
Oh, wow.
Okay.
So if it was half price, good value.
Every day.
Good value.
Every day.
That's the value there.
Every day.
For me, once every like two years is enough easily for that.
Like it's such an intense flavor.
It's perfect.
Until the day I die, I'm never gonna forget that bite.
So Z, that has been an introduction to kimbap.
Kim-credible.
Incredible.
Kim-credible.
Very good.
He's nailed it.
Which one was your favorite?
I have to say the caviar one.
Really?
Yeah, really.
Incredible.
It was perfection.
The first kimbap we tried.
Yeah.
Excellent.
It's your first ever kimbap.
It was great.
It was very good.
I've tried a lot of things which have those ingredients in, you know?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, of course.
But nothing in that way done 10 a.m. in the morning.
That's the time I want a kimbap.
Yeah.
Oh, if you'd given me that caviar one at 10 a.m.
I would have been like, mate.
Yeah, a bit too much.
Yeah, too much.
You're right, you're right.
But that other, I mean, I could have tuna kimbap in a little bit of ddeokbokki sauce
any time of day.
Give it to me at midnight.
I'm a happy man.
But I have to say I fully respect and admire the way that they've done it.
Even because I wanted one with caviar.
Yeah.
And it happened.
You literally asked for it.
You are literally making my dreams come true, mate.
All day.
Absolute pleasure.
Well, for now.
Bye.
I can't believe I just ate a 150,000 won kimbap.
It's insane.
