Well here in the UK we've already had a blast of early summer with some fantastic weather
and it makes one think of those summer days in the garden on picnics drinking alfresco
with a glass of lighter delicious particularly rosé wine and this week's wine of the week
is a rosé but one with a little bit of a difference. The wine of the week is the Mirambo
It's a non-vintage sparkling wine and it is on sale in Waitrose at £13.99 per bottle.
Now the Mirambo estate is owned by an English couple and they make a really good range of
Provence dry wines, dry pink wines and they created the sparkling version specifically at
request of Waitrose so they are the exclusive supplier of the wine. It's a blend of Syrah
and Grenache from down there in Provence in the south of France and the the Cronks who own the
winery made the decision to make this wine by the charmat method or the tank method which is
the similar method to that used in Prosecco production rather than making it with the
which involves a long second aging on the lees in individual bottles to make a much fresher
lighter and I dare say less expensive style of wine. The charmat method makes the wines in large
steel tanks, the secondary fermentation with the bubbles happens there but it doesn't happen in
individual bottles and what that does is produce a less yeasty and more fruity style of wine
that's exactly what we have here on the nose but it has a lovely Provence character with
small red berry fruits a touch of lemon lemon peel a little floral aspect and a nice kind of
juicy strawberry background here too that's very very inviting. In the mouth well it's only gently
sparkling it's not full-on bubbly it's just a nicely effervescent and bright there's a lovely
cut of acidity here a kind of raspberry-like acidity which etches the wine with a nice
freshness but again that lovely copious summer berry fruit comes streaming through and a real
touch of residual sugar nicely offset by the acidity to give this immense easy drinking
character and you know it is a wine to sip on its own without a doubt but with summer salads
with lighter seafood and fish dishes it would also slip down very well indeed. A fun wine this
wine of the week is the Mirambu La Folie sparkling rosé wine from Provence it is £13.99 in Waitrose
and it's a wine that manages to be both great fun light-hearted approachable but with excellent
quality my wine of the week
