A Hurricane hit our small business! [SHOP UPDATES]

the last few months have been a roller coaster for our business between hurricanes and power outages and just so many unexpected challenges but we are still here barely and we have got quite the story to tell so stay tuned hey everyone we're Jenny and Davis welcome back to our channel so this year has been the best year yet for our woodworking business but the last few months have really tested us it all started with the Houston duration back in May when both our house and our businesses were without power for over a week what's a dato a Duro is basically a thunderstorm that produces really strong straight line winds like over 100 m an hour StraightLine wins she's a meteorologist well I don't know if you can see me but um we have no power uh Houston got hit last night with a severe thunderstorm that was like hurricane force winds winds over 100 mph and uh we got hit with the brunt of it and uh orders have still got to go out so we're here with Jenny we got a generator and a flashlight and a flashlight we're Living on a Prayer in a hot spot anyway there's no power there's no Wi-Fi so how are we going to use the glow forges well I'm glad you asked we have a mobile hotspot and a dream I know it may seem silly but we talked to our neighbors last night we cleared some trees in our neighborhood everybody that we know is fine um and it was just either sit at home and wait for the power to come back on or come in work today and try to get the boards out despite uh what's going on so it works everything's alive computer's up Laser's on fan is on we're good so as long as I can get the mobile hotspot to work which we've done multiple times we can engrave boards I'm going to move the generator further out so we're not breathing in the [Applause] exhaust one of the things everybody complains about the glow forges is that if you lose Wi-Fi you can't engrave anything but if you've got a mobile hotspot which everybody does these days all you have to do is hold this button down for 10 seconds until it glows blue just like that and then boom you can connect your glow Forge to a mobile hotspot and you're good to go it's working great we've got all of our computers up we got both glow forges running on the mobile hotspot and on the generator way over there so all in all pretty great uh success I can't believe we pulled this off I was really I thought something else would happen or go wrong but it's cool [Music] all right well that's it we're boxing them up and we're done so can't stop us now we get to pick up tree limbs out of the backyard and fix the fence chop them all down and yeah fix our fence yeah we lost about half our trees so and half our fence after a week we got our power back but only to lose it again for four four more days it was a constant battle just to fulfill orders and get those out the door but in the midst of all these challenges we had something amazing to look forward to so just days after we had finished cleaning up after the dero we hosted our first ever stud stack Summit all right everybody it is time Jenny get over here sorry I'm recording all right we are at the stud stack Summit for 2024 everybody say hi all right and we are about to judge the winner of the box of scrap competition [Music] so hey congratulations you just won two cornhole games in a row back to back Champs done playing cornhole completely you would have gotten two the loser did you just lose cornhole I did I'm sorry are you having fun anyway it was my fault oh absolutely had he he threw the game for a patreon there we go how do you feel oh wonderful I'm glad we could keep our undefeated record uh in place you know uh first and foremost I got to give God all the glory uh you know without him we couldn't be here today to do this and uh you know and and thanks Mom you know and all those hours of practice that we spent this is these are the raining Champs right here you guys having fun abely great event what would you say to you should have been here oh my gosh should have been here absolutely should have been here it was a huge success members from our private Community traveled all over the country just to come here and hang out and spend the day with us and talk about business and eat some good food play some games and it was just it was an amazing time that we're never going to forget for the rest of our lives it was so much fun just as we were coming off the high of the stud stack Summit Duty called once again see we're also both in the Air Force parttime with a hurricane Hunters unit and there was a little hurricane uh named Barrel that was barreling towards the US so with our business and The Trusted hands of our employee to ship orders for us while we were gone we loaded up and headed into the store [Music] [Music] he [Music] [Music] Jenny and I both flew separate missions Into the Storm I flew through the eye of the storm a total of 12 times and Jenny flew through the storm 18 times so once again she smashes my record we knew it was going to be a nasty storm and that it was going to hit hard but we never had any idea that it was going to affect our business so badly the hurricane strengthened from a tropical storm back up to Hurricane strength again just before it made landfall and and although it was just a cat one storm it wiped out power in Houston for over a week and a half in some areas when we drove back home and back to the business it was dark there was no power coming back to a powerless business was so deflating and not to mention most of our customers were also dealing with their own storm damage so the last thing that they wanted to do was to hear from us trying to sell them some furniture but we used the downtime to make some big changes [Music] y [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] the heat was affecting our laser engravers in a a bad way and we knew we needed to make a switch so we moved the entire engraving and shipping process into the air conditioning here let me show you so all this used to be the laser engravers and the packing table and everything else and now it's just our board inventory but in here everything is nice and cool we don't have to worry about the lasers overheating we can stay cool as we start to fulfill the orders and everything is working great so far so I'm super happy that everything's in the air conditioning now but we dealt with a lot of problems in the last couple of months there's even more stuff that I'll tell you in future videos so hit subscribe if you want to hear it there's there's entire other catastrophes that I couldn't fit into this video but but all these challenges taught us something really important about running a business sometimes running a business feels like getting punched in the face even though you didn't do anything wrong and that's okay that's what running a business is you take on all the risk so that you can take on all the success later and it's how you respond to all these challenges that determines your success because you can't lose if you don't quit the goal of business is to stay in business if you want to make money or buy tools or anything that's all bonus but the goal of business is to stay in business so as long as you stay in business you win anyway we're back barring any other catastrophes it's been a while we've missed you but we're super happy to be making content again and we will see you [Music] the to the to the ain't it just who I [Music] am ask me how I do it sck to the stick to the
