In the background of China's weak economic recovery and tense geopolitical situation,
airlines around the world are cutting their flights to China and giving up this seemingly huge market.
What is the reason behind this? Let's listen to the expert's opinion.
The British airline recently announced that, due to business reasons,
flights to Beijing from London will be suspended from October 26 for a year.
The news was announced a few days ago.
British Airlines has just cancelled one of its flights to Hong Kong twice a day.
Britain's second-largest airline, Weizhen,
seems to be more determined to leave the Chinese market
and announce a direct suspension of its flights from London to Shanghai.
Previously, Weizhen also suspended flights to Hong Kong from London
and shut down its Hong Kong office.
Since then, Weizhen has completely withdrawn from the Chinese market.
In addition, Wenlai Airlines also announced its cancellation of flights to Beijing in July.
Australia Airlines announced in May that,
from July 28, it will suspend flights from Sydney to Shanghai,
and some airlines that have not yet taken off to China will use fewer seats.
Balian Airlines' flights to Beijing and Shanghai
will fully suspend Boeing 777, which was changed to a smaller model of Airbus A380.
Taiwan financial expert Huang Shicong believes
that the reduction of Western airlines and even the cancellation of Chinese flights
is mainly based on the consideration of supply-demand relations.
Up to now, the number of people traveling to China has increased,
not to mention that the number of people traveling to and from China has also decreased significantly.
They may have visa reviews and restrictions.
Another reason is to avoid the flow of funds.
In addition, European and American people,
such as the United States and Europe,
have so-called trade wars and technology wars with China,
and China has the so-called National Security Law.
Of course, not all countries dare to invest or reduce investment.
Since the beginning of 2023, since Beijing lifted the epidemic lockdown measures,
international passenger traffic has increased,
but due to the economic downturn and the decline in consumption,
the speed of recovery is slower than in other countries.
The data from Switzerland shows that
in July, the number of flights to China decreased by 23%
Now, the number of flights between the United States and China is only around 20% in 2019.
The United Airways of the United States said
that due to the significant decline in the travel demand for China,
the company has redistributed the capital to other Asian countries.
Some airline individuals believe that
the increase in costs is also one of the main reasons for foreign airlines to suspend Chinese flights.
Since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war in 2022,
Chinese airlines can continue to fly to Europe and North America through Russia.
In contrast, airlines from Europe and other countries
need to go around the Russian airspace to fly to China,
causing more time, manpower and fuel costs.
U.S. economist David Huang believes
that the quality of service and technical hardware of Western airlines are at a leading position.
If they withdraw from China, it can be said that the currency is expropriated.
In the short term, there may be a market share of China's aviation industry.
But in the medium term, it is not a very beneficial situation
for China's economic development and future diplomatic and political policies.
While foreign airlines withdraw from China,
Chinese airlines are trying to expand their international business.
According to flight attendants,
in the first half of this year,
the domestic airline's international flight market share in Europe reached 72.2%,
and it accounted for only 52.7% before the epidemic.
The public generally believes that
the Chinese airline's increase in international flights is a helpless situation.
Now, the number of flights has not yet recovered to before the epidemic,
but the number of domestic airlines has been increasing.
By the end of 2023, it reached 4,013 flights,
which is more than 10% higher than in 2019.
Huang Dawei believes that domestic airlines are almost all state-owned enterprises.
The reason why they are suppressing state-owned airlines is mostly due to political considerations.
The expansion of state-owned enterprises
is often different from that of Western companies.
China has always wanted to change the world's economy,
production, trade, and order.
So China has been expanding the share of foreign airlines.
The latest data shows that
the total loss of China's four state-owned airlines
in the first half of this year
exceeded 7 billion yuan.
