In last episode, we've met with Michel Chassol and his incredible collections.
The 1735 Hansport, the 1811 Chateau Huygens, and all vintages of Chateau Petrus, Chateau Huygens
and La Harmonie Comte. Obviously, Michel Chassol's precious bottles are far more than this.
This bottle is from the cave of Napoleon. It was in his chateau, the Fontainebleau,
and it's a very old bottle, 1805, and that bottle was in Versailles in an auction.
This bottle was sold from the restaurant, a very well-known French restaurant, Le Coq Hardy,
and it was their free bottle. I didn't have any money, as usual, but I just
go to look at the auction. I was expecting a very big price for that bottle, but at the end,
it was not so many people in the room because it was snowing outside. When it came,
it was about 250 francs, so it was an amazing price, and I said, okay, I want that bottle.
I said, no money, but I will have one bottle of Napoleon. They said, do you want the three
bottles? I said, my God, I would like, but two, one for drink, one for the museum,
so I have the two bottles. He was always dreaming about the great wines.
Great wines for him were nearer to a dream than to reality. That's why he collects and
doesn't open very often because it's a dream. That is for the wedding of Lady Diana and the
Prince Charles. You can see on the etiquette, two barriques, one for the birthday of the
Prince Charles and one for the birthday of Lady Diana, and when they got married,
they mixed the two barriques to make 600 bottles, and the people who were invited to this wedding,
they got one bottle of this two barriques. Also, somewhere in Paris, in the American bar,
and after the disaster of the Twin Towers, they had big problems because the Americans
didn't come anymore to drink the Macallan 1940, for instance, for $300, three centiliters,
and they needed money. Then they had to sell in auction some of the stock, and the historic
only bottles were there about Lady Diana. For the future, we will remember this big affair,
and to commemorate this dramatic affair, I got this bottle on my museum.
It's not only the collection of bottles, but it's the right bottle
and the specific vintage, and it's why it's fantastic.
You see these bottles were made especially for the Titanic. It was for the rich people on this
boat. They have a diamond on the neck, and they were on the big light drinking gold inside this
Marie Brizard. It was aristocratic things. It was fantastic. Then, after the boat got down on the
sea, Louis Renault, who was a rich man at the time, he managed to go to this travel, but he
didn't go. He remembered that he was drinking to the boat, so he went to the firm to ask,
have you got some more bottles? They said, yes, we still have two bottles for our museum,
and so and so. Anyway, this man had bought these two bottles, and it stayed like that from 1912
until 1980. The son, the little boy of this man, they needed money to buy a car, a Porsche,
I remember, and they sold these bottles in Versailles to the auction. I was in this auction,
and in 1980, nobody was interested about the Titanic, and also some people didn't know about
the young people, so it was a wine auction, and nobody was interested about this Marie Brizard.
They said, Marie Brizard, $30 in a shop, nobody was interested. I got it because I was curious
also for my museum, and gold in the bottle, in any case, and I got it, the two bottles,
for also a very cheap price, and these bottles, they became very famous in 1997, when the film
comes, and I remember in Champs-Elysees, a Japanese, he offered me $10,000 for these bottles,
because it was historically a Titanic film, and so and so, and another man who offered me $20,000,
but I said that is not for sales, it's for the future, to remember this historical
history. On the label of the bottle at the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana,
the long life and happiness is still clear and intact. From the shining gold in the
bottle of the Titanic, people could imagine how fancy that night was.
Here, in Michel Chassol's little museum, history was kept, not on paper, but enclosed in a bottle.
You can imagine, if I have drink all my collection bottle, it will not interest
nobody, no dream, and for this first, for this example, when you visit my collection,
you can dream, and it's sometimes it's better than to drink, and for the future generations,
somebody have to don't drink these bottles, so I do it. For years, Michel Chassol kept his
collection hidden from the public. When he revealed it, Connie Sears was stunned.
It's because it's not only French wines, you know, since the beginning, and I was
behind that, I wanted him to collect also the great wines from any part of the world, you know,
even from new countries. It was very important to have a collection of what is the best in every
part of the world, and he understood very quickly the importance of that, and he has a collection
of some of the greatest American, Australian, New Zealand, and wines from South Africa and other
places in the world. It's a sort of photography, a picture of the fantastic period during two
centuries, about the history of the wine in France, in Europe, but also in the world.
A Russian wine expert left one of his precious bottles here after he visited Michel Chassol's
wine museum. That bottle was a present from the former French president, Chirac.
He was visiting my cellar, and he was amazed about all the bottles, and he said, oh,
I think I have something for you. I was nearly in tears on my head, because you can imagine
the historic bottle from the Potemkin, from the Magarach Institute, from the best professor.
The wife of the well-known French artist Catalin sent Michel her husband's painting to us
after she knew Michel Chassol's collection. This painter is not so famous as Picasso,
but it can come in the future. Can you imagine if somebody had thought about that 50 years ago,
with the tool of Picasso, and the things personally, it could be incredible.
So I am thinking in advance for the next 30 or 50 years.
While the world is surprised at this rich collection, critics and questions come.
