What?
Please give it a try now!
Hi guys, welcome back to my channel!
We are back for another tutorial today.
And I'm super excited because it's also my giveaway video.
I've reached 10,000 subscribers. Thank you so much.
And 4,000 followers on Instagram, which is crazy.
Like, 4,000 people follow me and want to see what I do.
That's so weird.
But anyway, to celebrate, I partnered up with Sucker Punch Skate Shop in Belgium.
And they are providing three super cool gifts.
So if you're interested in the giveaway, watch till the end of this video.
And I'm going to show you what you need to do in order to participate.
And yeah, the giveaway starts today, same day as this video comes out.
So, let's go!
Now, that being said, I posted a mini dip tutorial.
On my Instagram.
That is, up to date, I think the second most watched and liked video ever.
So, apparently people want to learn how to dip.
And this is a move that took me a while to master.
So I want to go through it step by step with you.
Give you all the tools you need.
The sun is right here, but I can't see you.
The struggles of making videos outside, guys.
It's windy, it's sunny, it's cold, and everything at the same time.
So I want to take you through the dips, step by step, to get you to a solid basis for your dips.
And then you can play around with them, make them as crazy as you want to make them.
Or as simple and basic as you want to make them.
But at least then you can do dips.
Hi there, it's me again.
So the wind was not a team player, so all my instructions will be voiced over.
So, step one is to get stable in a lunge on skates.
Now I always tell you, abs, abs, abs.
Even under that layer of comfiness, you tense your abs to keep yourself balanced.
And then you lunge into it.
You don't overextend your back leg and you don't push your knees over your front toes.
They should be kind of in line with your front toes.
A tip to already get you in dip position is to pull your shoulder blades together and back towards your extended leg.
As you're kind of leaning back on that extended back leg to kind of get you in that dip momentum already.
So once you're stable in your lunge, we're going to practice opening up your shoulder, your hip and your foot.
Which is actually going to help you get into your dip.
And a dip is always a bit half circular or even circular.
So it's never a straight back move.
It's always a move with a curve in it.
The best way to get into a dip motion is to open up your side of your body that has the extended leg.
And the way that happens is your head will guide your shoulder, which will guide your hip, which will guide your foot.
So you always have to start with your head.
And that means looking over your shoulder and opening that shoulder up towards the back.
So opening up your shoulder was actually something that I had a lot of issues with.
So I came up with a pretty cool tip to really help you get that shoulder opening move right.
And that is to take your arm behind your back and try to touch the other butt cheek.
Because that automatically forces your shoulder to open.
And if you're looking over it, it already puts your body in a position to go into a dip.
So let me guess, you try to combine the lunge and the opening shoulders and your dip is not dipping.
Well, that's because you need to use your toe wheels of the leg that you're going to extend.
While very importantly keeping the bulk of your weight on your standing leg, which is the leg that you're not extending.
By using your toe wheels, you're going to notice that opening up your pelvis is going to look so much smoother and work so much better.
So here's a drill to get you accustomed to the movement of opening up your body.
You don't need to lunge yet.
This is just about really getting yourself acquainted to opening that shoulder, looking over your shoulder, opening your pelvis and using your back leg on the front wheels.
So just do this for a few times until you get used to it.
One of your sides is going to suck.
It's going to suck so bad and you're going to fall.
It's going to feel so weird.
It's like it's not part of your body.
Because you are very much used to doing stuff on one side.
In my case, I am extremely dominant on the right side.
Everything on the right looks great.
But on the left, it looks weird.
It's really just like, what am I doing?
So I need to drill my left dip constantly.
And I have fallen so many times in this dip because it's just not natural.
Even now, I can do it, but it doesn't feel as natural as my right dip.
My left is just...
Okay, so we're almost ready to combine the moves and have you do your first actual dip.
We're almost there.
But before we do that, I have to break down your edges for you and where your weight has to be.
You know that I always talk about weight distribution because skating is all about understanding where your weight is at a certain point and how to transfer it to another point when needed.
Dips are all about outside edges, guys.
So my front leg where I have most of my weight, when I go into a dip, I actually lean towards the little toe of that leg.
So I'm making a circle and most of my weight is pointed towards the little toe or at least that edge of my skate.
And I'm going to try to slow it down for you.
But you can actually see that my leg kind of slants toward that little toe.
And I can already see some of the questions.
D, my skates don't slant. I don't know how to do that.
My leg or my foot won't get into that position.
What do I do?
Now, if you feel like your foot is not leaning enough, like it's very stiff, it might be that you have to loosen your trucks.
Now, what are your trucks?
Your trucks are these two things right here that have your wheels adjusted to your plate.
If you loosen them, it gets a bit more movable.
In the beginning, this could be very scary because you wobble a lot on your skates.
But it does allow you to maneuver faster and more easily and just makes your moves more flowy and fluid.
So if you feel that that is an issue, then I would advise you to start loosening them up just a little bit.
Not too much, just a little bit to get you going.
And now it's time to put it all together.
So we're going to start by slowly skating backwards.
Lunging, touching your other butt cheek, looking over your shoulder.
And then other side. Lunging, butt cheek, shoulder.
And then you're already turning.
Again.
So you see, as soon as I put my hand on my other butt cheek and over my shoulder, I turn.
I was going straight, and now I turn.
Personally, I find dips to be easier when you go a bit lower and you have more speed.
So let's try that.
Speed, lower, dip, turn.
That's it.
And that is it. You got your dip.
But you don't have the stylization yet.
So how do you make your dip look cool?
There are two things in my experience that make your dip really look cool.
One of it is actually coming back up.
So bringing your feet back together and body rolling in that movement.
And the other one are your arms.
So let's tackle body roll.
When I'm in a dip, I have to bring my feet back together.
I pull my feet back, pull my legs back, tense my upper leg muscles to bring them back together.
I like to do a kind of a body roll, as you see here.
When I'm bringing my feet back together.
So I'm literally pulling my legs back together to bring them next to each other.
And then switching my legs.
And also then, of course, switching my weight.
Because I'm switching my front leg.
So in that split second, I am pulling my leg back up with a body roll.
They're next to each other.
I switch my weight from the one leg to the other leg.
And then dip to the other side.
This is the exact moment I switch my weight from one leg to the other leg.
Okay, so you've got your body roll down.
You know how to do a dip.
Now it's time to look at your other appendages.
Namely your arms.
These are one of the most difficult things to control.
Because you usually use them for balance.
And you don't really pay attention to them.
So I always then end up looking like a flailing penguin.
Which I've said many times before.
But with dips, I like to really focus on my arms.
To either put them by my waist.
Hold on to my fanny pack or bum bag.
Put them in the air.
Depending on what I want my dip to look like.
I do different things with my arms.
Putting them in the air very gracefully makes it look very elegant.
Holding on to my bum bag makes it look a bit more street.
And that's how I can play with my dips and give them different feelings.
And that guys is how you do your dip.
I hope it was clear.
And I hope that it will help you to get your dip down.
Remember it's just trial and error.
Practice, practice, practice, practice.
Until you get it.
Remember to get your safety gear when you're trying this for the first time.
Because you will fall.
But it's normal. You just get back up and continue.
And talking about safety gear.
