Our Earth is home to a never-ending array of fascinating creatures and exotic species.
Even after the fast-paced scientific development of the past century,
in areas like botany, zoology, marine studies and others,
scientists estimate that they have not yet identified 70% of the species found on Earth.
Today, we bring you 20 fascinating animals that were unearthed in the last decade.
Legend has it that the band Pink Floyd once played so loudly at a show
that all the fish in the nearby pond died from sheer volume of the music.
Now there's a new species of shrimp named Pink Floyd,
which can kill fish by making a loud noise.
Xenophaeus Pink Floydi rapidly opens and closes its large claws,
creating a sound that can reach up to 210 decibels, louder than a typical rock concert.
The sound is loud enough to kill small fish nearby.
Interestingly, the creature's new name has nothing to do with the urban myth about Pink Floyd's loud
music. The fact is that the inspiration for the shrimp's name was really the color of its claw,
which is pink.
Ocrean Sunfish
This is one of the heaviest known fishes in the world.
Adults typically weigh between 247 and 1,000 kilograms.
The species is native to tropical and temperate waters around the globe.
The Ocrean Sunfish resembles a fish head with a tail, and its main body is flattened laterally.
Sunfish can be as tall as they are long, and their dorsal and ventral fins are elongated.
Sunfish are generalist predators and largely consume small fish,
fish larvae, squid, sea jellies, and crustaceans.
Headless Chicken Monster
This queer sea creature is actually a deep-sea cucumber
that helps to filter organic matter on the ocean floor.
The creature was caught on film last year in the Gulf of Mexico.
Due to its unusual physique, scientists call it the headless chicken monster,
or the swimming sea cucumber.
A headless chicken monster has been seen only one other time,
according to Australia's Department of Energy and Conservation.
The creature was caught on camera during a project in which scientists were using cameras
to understand the effects of long-line fishing on species that live in deeper parts of the ocean.
Neopalpa Donald Trump
Among recently discovered species of insects is this moth called Neopalpa Donald Trump.
This moth lives in a habitat that spans Southern California and Mexico.
It was named by evolutionary biologist Vazrik Naziri
in an article published in the scientific journal called Zookies.
The moth, the second species of a genus of twirler moths,
can be distinguished by the yellowish-white scales on its head.
Fun fact, Trump will not be the first president to have a strange animal named after him.
Just last month, a fish native to the coral reefs of northwestern Hawaii
was named after ex-president Barack Obama in honor of his efforts to protect the fish's habitat.
Ninja Lantern Shark
Scientists have discovered a new species of shark.
This shark possesses jet-black skin, bulbous eyes,
and special cells that allow it to glow in the dark.
They call it the Ninja Lantern Shark.
The shark's scientific name is Etmopteris benchleyi.
It is named after Peter Benchley, who is a shark lover and author of the book Jaws.
An interesting fact is that to come up with the name for this shark,
researcher Vicky Vasquez says she had a conversation with her 8-year-old son.
The super stealth of the creature combined with its sleek black appearance
led the kid to suggest the name Super Ninja Shark for it.
Areovixia Gryffindori
A spider bearing an uncanny resemblance to the Sorting Hat in the Harry Potter series
has been discovered by scientists in India.
The Areovixia Gryffindori, measuring just 7 millimeters in length,
the spider takes its name from Godric Gryffindor, the fictional owner of the hat.
The animal was recently discovered in the mountainous Western Ghats region,
located in southwestern India.
The spider is an ode drawing attention to the fascinating
but often overlooked world of invertebrates.
Blue Tarantula
This strange creature was just one of the many incredible finds during an expedition
the Biodiversity Assessment Team undertook to Potaro Plateau, located in Guyana.
The upland region where the survey took place represents a very important
transition zone for species that live between the lowlands and the highlands.
The region is characterized by high levels of endemism from many taxonomic groups.
During the survey, the Biodiversity Assessment Team was able to catch a glimpse into this
special area, the species that live there, and their habitats.
After the expedition was over,
experts stated that more work is necessary to shed light on all of the region's secrets.
UFO Jellyfish
An NAOO exploration ship, the Okeanos Explorer,
caught a video recording one of the ocean's most beautiful creatures.
Diving at a depth of 9,000 feet, a remotely operated vehicle spotted a luminous jellyfish.
The cosmic jellyfish was seen while exploring the U2 Seamount,
north of American Samoa, in the Pacific Ocean.
NAOO said the sea creature showed the perfectly relaxed arrangement of the two sets of tentacles,
a position that would allow for optimum feeding in the mid-water environment at 3,000 meters.
This is indeed one recently discovered underwater sea species,
which is caught on camera in an unbelievable way.
Motaris Lele
While the shark can be easily recognized by its huge nose leading into its small body,
the most defining characteristic of this new species is the glow it emits in the dark.
Named Motaris Lele by scientists, the shark belongs to the lantern shark family,
and was found nearly 1,000 feet below surface in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Hawaii.
Stephen M. Kajura, a professor at Florida Atlantic University,
was one of the researchers who worked for several years to discover the shark.
Maratus Bubo
Biologists have recently discovered seven new peacock spiders on the south coast of
Western Australia, bringing the total number of these species to 48.
These unusual spiders use their brightly colored fans to attract a mate.
Like other peacock spiders, all these adorable arachnids have eight legs,
front-facing eyes, and furry bodies.
The amazing fact is that they come in a range of colors, sporting patterns of brown and white
coats, as well as of vibrant and iridescent scales.
To differentiate between species of peacock spiders, scientists have to study the design
of the male's fan, the coloration of the insect's head, and the ornamentation on its legs.
But the main feature which distinguishes one species from another is the mating dance.
Yeti Crab
Kiwa is a genus of marine decapods living in deep-sea hydrothermal vents and cold seeps.
The animals are commonly referred to as yeti lobsters or yeti crabs.
They were named after the legendary yeti because of their hairy or bristly appearance.
The genus is placed in the family Kiwade.
Due to the presence of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria on the setae of both Kehirusta
and the New South Wales Indy Ridges, these creatures feed on bacteria in addition to scavenging.
Peekaboo Spider
In a bizarre ritual, an amorphous male hides on the underside of a leaf and
thrusts the paddle on its legs high enough for a female on the other side of the leaf to see.
The researchers know of no other jumping spider that conducts such a peekaboo courtship.
These interesting findings were recently published in a scientific journal called Pechemia.
Study co-author and independent spider expert David Hill has scrutinized a lot of spiders,
but this one, according to him, is the most amazing insect anyone has ever seen.
Wallace's Giant Bee
It's been 38 years since scientists last spotted this rare insect known as Wallace's Giant Bee.
This bee is a rare species found only on a group of Indonesian islands called the North Maluccas.
With a wingspan of two and a half inches and a body the size of a human thumb,
this is the world's largest bee.
Species were thought to have gone extinct.
In January 2018, an international team of conservationists found a Mega Chile Pluto,
as the species is called, in the wild.
The team also captured photos and videos of this bee,
and these have renewed everyone's hope that the species might, after all, survive.
Hog-Nosed Rat
A team of scientists have discovered a strange animal on Sulawesi Island, Indonesia.
The species, which has been named Hyorhinomens stuempki, or hog-nosed rat.
This rat has distinct and unique features which are uncommon to other rats.
The nostrils of the rat resemble a hog's that are unique.
The rat also has a long face, large ears, and lower teeth.
Its teeth resemble those of shrew rats.
Cave-Dwelling Beetle
The unusual Krubera cave, located in western Kakakus, remains a mystery.
Researchers from two Spanish universities recently discovered a new species of beetle
in the depths of this cave.
The new species of cave beetle is called Duvalis abyssimus.
So far, the only two specimens, a male and a female, have been found.
The Duvalis genus is a successful colonizer of Earth's depths.
Majority of the members of this species have a hypogean lifestyle,
and they live in caves or the superficial underground compartment.
Tardigrades
Researchers in a lab at Indian Institute of Science scoured their campus for water bears.
These were then exposed to extreme conditions.
Experts at the lab hit the specimens with rays from germicidal UV lamp.
The dose of one kilojoule per square meter,
which killed bacteria and roundworms just after five minutes,
became lethal for Hypsibius exemplaris.
Tardigrades at 15 minutes.
Most died after 24 hours.
However, when a reddish-brown species of the Tardigrades were hit with these radiations,
surprisingly all survived.
The Parasus titi
Titi monkeys are species of neotropical primates,
which can further be classified into 30 distinguishable species.
These tree-dwelling monkeys are small, and they stand 23 to 46 centimeters tall.
They have long, soft fur and striking coloration.
Titi monkeys live in small family groups.
They are primarily fruit eaters and prefer dense forests near water.
These monkeys easily jump from branch to branch,
a characteristic which has earned them their German name, jumping monkeys.
The Parasus titi occurs in several locations in the Brazilian states of Marigroso and Rodonia.
Lassionathus dynema
In the depths where this fish live, there is no sunlight.
The only light comes from the creatures that produce bioluminescence.
Bioluminescence means the fish generate their own light source.
Also, at these depths, the pressure is immense,
over one ton per square inch, and the fight for food is never-ending.
That's why anglerfish have developed their unique way of attracting prey.
This fleshy, bait-like appendage in front of their heads acts like a fishing pole of sorts.
The recently discovered anglerfish species lives at depths ranging between 3,280 and 4,900 feet.
Giant squid
After years of trying to develop ways to observe deep-sea animals,
this senior scientist from Florida,
who is also the CEO of Ocean Research and Conservation Association,
has finally figured out the key.
She developed a special camera system called Medusa.
This system emits a red light invisible to most creatures living in Midnight Zone,
a dark area situated 3,280 feet below the ocean's surface.
With the help of this special system,
scientists were able to videotape the life of this strange creature.
The creature was about 10 to 12 feet long and resembled a giant squid.
Scientists estimated that the creature could grow up to 40 feet.
The Siphonophore
Siphonophore is an order of hydrogens,
a class of marine organisms belonging to the phylum Cnidaria.
The order contains 175 species.
Although a Siphonophore may appear to be an individual organism,
each specimen is in fact a colonial organism composed of
that are morphologically and functionally specialized.
Zoids are multicellular units that develop from a single fertilized egg
and combine to create functional colonies.
These colonies are able to reproduce, digest, float,
maintain body positioning, and use jet propulsion to move.
Most colonies are long, thin, transparent floaters living in a pelagic zone.
