For Tofino, the sea otter pup splashing around the pool at the Vancouver Aquarium is a huge
accomplishment.
She's one of two pups rescued by the Marine Mammal Rescue Society earlier this summer.
She loves attention, so she's a kid right now.
She loves attention.
She loves exploring.
She loves talking a lot to everybody as well.
The other pup, Luna, remains in critical care.
It's the first time the Rescue Society has been taking care of two fragile pups at the
same time, keeping staff busy.
When they come in, we are mom.
And so they're high maternal investment animals, so we are on 24-hour care.
The aquarium is still nursing the pups back to health.
Tofino here is 13 weeks old, while Luna is only five weeks.
Tofino's been moved here to this pool, and Luna will eventually be, but is still living
in the nursery that's newly set up.
And the hope is that both pups will make a full recovery once they both meet their milestones.
This is a huge milestone for Tofino to be in the pool, a bigger pool.
This means that she knows how to swim.
She knows how to watch for food.
She's grooming on her own.
She's making great otter decisions.
Tell me about Luna's status at the moment.
Luna is still in critical care, so she's a lot younger.
So anytime the otter pups come through, they are in critical care.
So that means that staff have a lot more monitoring to do because they're not doing a lot of
on their own.
Staff here at the Vancouver Aquarium say the Department of Fisheries and Oceans have deemed
the pups non-releasable, which means here at the Vancouver Aquarium is now their forever
home.
