My name is Joyce Wanjiku Nyanjui, and I'm a farmer from Kuku.
We have a farm called Libra Poultry, and it's a newborn baby.
So I welcome you all to nurture it together with us.
And this is my success story.
It has taken me three years for me to make a good profit,
and from where I am today, I'm expecting zero deaths and more profit,
because I know what I'm doing, and I'm very focused.
I started in 2015, and it was not successful at that moment,
but later, it has been successful through research.
And AfriChick has been my pillar, because I've been watching their videos,
and I've been learning how they do it.
So until now, I've been learning their methods, and I've seen that it's been helping me.
So far, so good.
I started with four chickens, and I was given by my mum-in-law.
So that's where my interest came from.
When she gave it to me, I started to raise them,
and then from there, they became babies.
And then I saw that I could also expand that,
to raise chickens, because I see that they're growing well.
And then people started asking,
do you have milk, do you have other chickens, do you have sheep?
So I went and bought 60 chicks.
Because, as I said, I didn't have any experience with chickens.
So when I started, I knew nothing about eating chickens.
So what I did, I started with no knowledge of chickens.
So from there, when I brought the 60 chicks,
after like a month, they all died.
From there, I didn't ask myself why,
because I went to agro-vets, they gave me this medicine,
I explained, they gave me this.
So all of them died.
I didn't give up.
I went again with the other 70.
They didn't hurt me, but it was not still successful.
So when I brought them, they only survived 40.
I continued with them.
So from there, I started selling chickens.
From there, I brought the other 100.
So along the way, I was asking myself,
why did they die?
Why did they survive?
That's when I started studying.
I studied, I went to YouTube,
I looked at who was doing research,
who was studying well,
and I found out about AfriChick.
And we have been working this journey with them.
And so far, so good.
Right now, we have just started with 200.
And we are planning,
until now, we can be getting our own eggs.
Because right now,
I had an incubator,
which could only hold 60 eggs.
And due to demand, it was not enough for me.
So I decided to buy another incubator,
which can hold more eggs.
And due to the demand of the chicks,
we have decided that we can raise our own chicks,
so that we can get our own eggs.
From there, we sell our chicks,
we know where they came from,
the fathers and the mothers of our chicks.
And we are sure of the breed,
that if we sell them today,
they will not disappoint us,
and they will give us good eggs,
because they have high resistance to diseases,
and they also have mature eggs.
Apart from the chicken,
we have guineafowl,
we have ducks,
we have turkeys,
and we also have goose.
And we expect more of those to come.
My main challenge has been
lack of knowledge,
because of lacking knowledge,
my chicks have died a lot,
but I have not given up.
And that's the first one.
The second one is feed.
I have been buying poor feeds,
that also contribute to the deaths
of the chicks that have died.
And the third is different types of diseases,
with the birds.
But also that one has become
as a result of lack of knowledge.
Because if I knew,
like when you are layering your chicks,
you are not supposed,
I didn't know that you are not supposed
to put wood shavings
immediately after their hatchery.
So right now I know you are not supposed.
Through our free chick,
I have learned all that,
and I have perfected on that.
And since I started doing that,
I have seen good results,
and profit has been coming.
My other challenge is
lack of enough eggs,
and good quality of eggs,
because when you go to the farmers,
there is someone who will tell you
that you are crazy,
that you have mixed the eggs.
As you know,
if you put the eggs in the incubator,
it will not hatch,
it has been 7 days.
So he or she won't tell you
the truth about the eggs.
So when you go to the incubator,
you will find that only 30%
of the eggs have hatched.
So that is a problem,
because you have bought the eggs,
and they have not yet hatched.
If they have hatched,
it means that they have given birth,
they are not sick,
even after giving vaccination,
so it has been a very big challenge.
And that is why
we have seen that our chicks
are good breeders,
and they will be able to give us
good eggs,
those who are resistant to disease,
and those who are hungry,
and those who have given birth,
and then they hatch.
I have been able to address
this problem, or challenges,
through doing a lot of research.
There are so many people
when you go to YouTube
who are doing poultry,
but not all of them have good information.
But through those researches,
I came across
a free chick,
and I have tried to contact them,
and luckily enough,
they gave me a surprise visit,
and I am very thankful,
and very happy,
and through them I have learnt a lot about poultry
that I didn't know,
and I never thought that I would know
about what I know today.
And that's how I have been
able to cut the cost.
Per crate,
it's 900.
So maybe
if you do your calculation,
you will see roughly how much money you will have.
And from there,
I can sell these eggs.
So when I say sell,
I put it in the incubator.
Per chick, right now it's
100 or 120.
So you can calculate 120 by
120 or 100.
You see, that's how much
I am making.
Apart from cutting the eggs,
I sell at a beauty shop.
first of all,
before you enter this business,
you have to be very hardworking.
Because if you want to have two or three chickens,
you can't do that,
and you are lazy.
So you have to raise them well.
Because if I raise them well,
I give my chicken food and water,
and the greens from there,
I go to the beauty shop,
and I sell.
In the evening or during the day,
I come and collect the eggs.
From there,
I go somewhere else,
or I go back to work.
So I want to encourage
the youth who are at home,
start with what you have.
Even if it's small,
do not displace a humble beginning.
Because later you will see,
maybe that was your dream job,
So I encourage my friends
to come and work with me.
Let's not do the dirty work.
As you can see,
right now there is no job.
Companies are closing.
So if you start small,
you will grow.
And also,
don't stay idle.
At least find something to do.
Even if you have lost your job,
you see that the business is not going well,
I assure you,
you will not be disappointed.
Because I have been,
I have failed so many times,
but I never give up.
So don't give up.
Do it until you get it.
Without a good breed,
you will also get poor chicks.
So it's good,
you can walk.
We sell eggs,
we sell chicks,
we have good breeders,
we have goats,
we have ducks.
You can walk,
we can sell you,
you can sleep,
and you will get rich.
