The Wisdom of Yang Tzu, Part 3
Why did Yang Tzu refuse the king's reward?
The King of Qijin Gong sent Yang Tzu to manage Dong.
Yang Tzu surrendered.
Surprisingly, three years later, Yang Tzu became famous.
Everyone in the kingdom came to know about it.
When Qijin Gong heard about Yang Tzu's reputation,
he was very unhappy.
He summoned Yang Tzu to the palace and reprimanded him.
I thought you were capable
and that it would not have been a problem for you
to manage Dong.
That's why I asked you to do this job.
Now I hear that Dong is in a total mess.
Go home and think about it.
I will punish you severely.
Qijin Gong wanted to free him.
Yang Tzu realized that he had displeased the king.
But he gave no explanation, only excuses.
I know my mistakes, Your Majesty.
Please give me another chance.
In three years from now,
my good reputation will spread throughout the kingdom.
If I fail again, I will pay for it with my life.
When Gong heard this,
he felt that it would be wrong
not to give Yang Tzu another chance.
So Yang Tzu returned to Dong.
Three years later, just as Yang Tzu had predicted,
everyone was praising him.
When Yang Tzu brought back the tax record to Qijin Gong,
Qijin Gong was very happy.
He personally welcomed Yang Tzu.
Qijin Gong sat down and praised Yang Tzu for his successes.
When he wanted to reward Yang Tzu,
he politely declined his offer.
Qijin Gong was surprised and asked for forgiveness.
Yang Tzu said to him,
In the first three years that I spent in Dong,
I developed trade and built roads.
I strictly respected the rules
and got rid of thieves,
so the thieves hated me.
I worked hard and lived a frugal life,
so the lazy people hated me.
I was just revising the disputes
and did not favor the nobles,
so the rich and the powerful hated me.
I did not try to please the people around me,
so these people hated me.
When I dealt with high-ranking officials,
I followed the protocol correctly,
so the officials hated me.
As a result, the nobles hated me,
the lazy people hated me,
as well as the nobles.
They ruined my reputation outside the palace.
The people who worked with me and the powerful people
also ruined my reputation inside the palace.
So, three years later,
I became famous throughout the kingdom
and even Your Majesty knew it.
As a result, I changed my old way of doing things.
I managed the place with care.
I no longer built roads
and encouraged trade and commerce.
I no longer rewarded people
for their hard work and their frugal life.
I stopped punishing thieves and scammers.
By revising the disputes,
I respected the opinions of rich and powerful people.
Thus, the thieves,
the thieves and the nobles were all happy,
so they praised me.
The people who worked with me were also happy
because I granted them all their wishes
and I accepted their wine pots.
I taxed people more
and flattered the people around Your Majesty.
Now, everyone boasts me for my successes.
In the past, I had tried my best to help the poor people,
so no one was hungry.
Now, no one has dongs,
has a lot of savings
and more than half of the people are hungry.
What I did during the first three years
should have been rewarded,
but Your Majesty was unhappy
and wanted to punish me severely.
Now that I have committed a capital crime,
you receive me personally and compliment me.
I just have a little trouble understanding all this.
I want to leave my post
and let someone virtuous take over.
How can I accept any reward from you?
Qi Jinggong was stunned.
He got up immediately and said,
Please,
do your best to manage dongs,
it's your business,
I will never interfere again.
The king of Qi then knew how virtuous Yang Tzu was
and later made him a prime minister.
