This vlog is about how a Flat Tire on the side of the road in El Salvador led me to the exact right person offering exactly what I had been looking for... Tune in to find out!
Okay, he's on here.
Hello, how are you?
Good, and you?
You're Gato?
Nice to meet you.
Hello and welcome to vlog number 59.
How are you?
Good, good. Everything's good.
Today, I'm in Santa Ana, El Salvador and I'm here to meet Gato.
How are you?
Good.
Gato is a friend of some of my friends.
And recently, when I got a flat tire, my friend Agustin told me to reach out to Gato for some help.
And while I thought I was coming to Gato just for tire advice, little did I know that there would be some big adventures ahead.
So long story short with the tire is that, well, it's old.
And a few weeks ago, I actually tried to buy a new tire from BMW in San Salvador.
But they told me that there were no ADV tires available in the country whatsoever.
In addition, the chances to get one in Honduras or Nicaragua are even more slim.
So this is when I got my first clue that Gato was some sort of magician.
So Gato made some calls and together with his friend Jaime, we went on a hunt for a new tire.
And even though BMW told me they had searched inventory across all stores in El Salvador without luck, somehow Gato and Jaime were able to find one.
I didn't think I could be more impressed and grateful until I discovered that Gato's magic was not just in mechanics and finding tires.
Okay, today is a big day because I'm going to have my first official off-road lesson.
Yep, this is true. I have not had any official off-road training.
However, I have been looking for it, but without success.
Until my flat tire led me to Gato, who also happens to be an expert off-road rider and trainer.
And he agreed to give me some lessons.
Okay, Gato is here to pick me up to go get my bike to go do some off-road lessons.
Here he is, my pickup truck with bikes.
Hello, how are you? With the bikes.
Wow, I'm sorry if I record.
For my vlog.
It's the first training.
But you're going with another...
I'm going with a small one so I can practice.
You do the small one and then the other one.
Okay.
And I'll take the small one.
How much is this small one?
How much is it?
$150.
We're going to bring your bike to my house.
And you follow me.
Okay, okay.
And that's your bike?
That's the 800.
Oh, really?
It's a little weirder. I think the color is because of the years.
The Bumblebee.
I had an R80.
Yes?
Yes, the R83.
Oh, okay.
Okay, we're going to get my bike now.
This is Gato's 800 GS.
And then he's going to start me off with a little 150 to do some stuff.
And then we'll move on to my bigger bike.
What's your name?
Ginger and Harley.
What?
Ginger and Harley.
Ginger is this?
Harley.
Oh, it's Ginger.
Ah, the black one is Ginger.
My mother.
Hello, nice to meet you.
Thank you.
How are you?
Hello, how are you?
How are you?
All good, yes.
I'm going to a class.
I know how to drive on the dirt, but I don't have a lot of experience.
I take the dirt roads, and it's just a surprise that I'm not dead.
I saw the bike too, and I said, how can you drive it?
Thank you.
I'll stop in a year.
And I'm going with Ginger, and she's going to Panama.
Oh, wow.
And he's going with Ginger.
Hello, nice to meet you.
How are you?
I'm Tammy.
I'm Ena.
Ena.
Uh-huh.
You got the dirt?
Yes, the dirt.
Thank you.
So we're off to my very first day of off-road training.
And, well, I didn't have much of a clue about what we were going to do or where we were going.
But I was both excited and nervous.
Which became kind of obvious, because I was about to do one of the dumbest things I have ever done.
We're going in the recenter.
Okay.
Should I turn around?
Yeah.
Okay.
Careful.
Okay, yeah.
Whatever, done?
Sorry.
Do you have $500?
Yeah.
That's okay.
Okay.
This will pay.
See, that was dumb.
I don't know what.
Too slow, Eam.
Well, that was dumb of me.
And I guess counts as my very first accident.
But thankfully, everyone was okay and we were able to laugh it off.
Great start to the day.
Yes.
Everything first year.
Starting the day with a bang.
Perhaps my little accident was my subconscious way of trying to lower expectations for my skills.
You are good.
Good?
Surprising after that.
One thing that feels...
You stand.
No, I don't know how to stand.
Okay.
So, let the class begin.
First up, the zigzag.
At the beginning, I was a little wobbly.
Do the same thing.
Now, try to play with your body.
As short as possible.
Okay.
As short as possible.
Next up, the emergency stop.
It's bad.
Slippy.
So, I brake...
Más adelante.
Correct.
Another one.
Also, use a little bit of my front.
You forgot the one in front.
Trap.
I did a trap.
Now, for some hills.
Less clutch.
No.
No?
No.
I like the weight of that.
Yes.
It's probably a good idea.
It's about getting rid of your fear.
I love it.
Like too much comfort.
This part.
How nice.
How kind.
Like a dog.
A weird dog.
Yes, weird.
Very weird.
I already feel like I made a lot of progress so far in patrol.
And I'm just so grateful for all of them.
I just want to do it more and more and more and get better and better and better.
And I'm very sorry for my appearance.
Gross.
Come out to that.
Okay.
So, we're back to the zigzag.
But with my 650.
And definitely, I can feel the weight.
With the extra weight, it almost felt like starting from square one.
But once again, little by little, I got better.
Day one.
After this, I'll sign up for GS.
GS!
What?
This line.
Yes, inside.
Finally, back to the little guy for some bowls.
Try it.
Foot on the foot page.
What?
Your feet and your foot page.
Oh.
Correct.
Okay.
Como?
Start.
One foot.
Oh.
Foot page.
Immediately, you run.
Another foot on the foot page.
Okay.
Go that way.
And go out that way.
Okay.
Sun is going down.
That was an awesome day.
Gonna wrap it up here.
Well, that was one incredible day.
And I gotta say, I think my first official training was a success.
Carlos, say bye.
Adios, Carlos.
Me encantó.
On the ride home, I was feeling pretty grateful.
And I couldn't help but think how perfect it was that one little rusty nail in my tire led me here
to receive exactly what I needed in perfect time.
My story with Gato, however, is not over.
And, in fact, it has only just begun.
Because while today, I got a taste of Gato's magic, I will soon discover an even deeper power.
But that is for the next vlog.
So, thank you for watching and see you in the next one.
