My name is Ngozi Ibe and welcome to Leadership, Health and Change.
We apologize for any inconvenience.
We've returned to duty and are returning to you for important information about our health.
Because we've decided that our health is our first priority
So we're here with these movies to help you keep looking for a way to live earlier and better
So, today we'll talk about health living living
And we have a friend with us, Dr. Shidalee Vincent.
This is a cardiologist.
From the central hospital to the central hospital
This is a doctor specializing in research, specializing in research of smart hospitals.
So, welcome to the Leadership
Thank you.
So, as I said before
We'll be back to tell you about the easy issues.
It is related to health and early life
So, in today's film, there's a live-live friend
We want your doctor to tell you, help us know more about what you need
And know about the hospitals that are completely alive alive
Or health problems
And we also want to talk about how to live a good life
Knowing your health will help you stay healthier.
And keep your health better than ever
So, Doctor, as here, what is there, what is there, in a normal way
Help us know how to live a good life
If a doctor can ask for a hospital, a Nigerian citizen,
How to live well
Health is one of the important issues
And it's very important to operate in all facilities
We often say that everyone's health is their health.
And as we know, health is a soft form
Especially the health side.
And health is a very active issue
Health to all on day
Usually, the health of each person is about 200-220 times
Every day, 24 hours
And anything that makes this health issue a very important one
So health is a problem that is almost in contact with all the systemic problems
Because health is connected to all the problem systems
Through some channels we refer to as blood vessels
And so, when the heart beats, it acts as a pump
Actually, it's a muscle pump.
And when it pumps blood, this blood follows these channels
And it goes around the body through what we call arteries.
And then when this blood, which is all parts of the body
The blood returns to the heart again.
When all the essential nutrients, oxygen and everything that the body needs
Has been extracted from the blood
The blood, we like to call it the empty blood now
The blood that has been depleted of all its nutrients and whatever
Now it returns to the heart through what we call the veins
And by the time it gets to the heart
The heart sends this blood to the lungs.
To go and get a fresh supply of oxygen
And then this oxygen goes back to the heart again.
And then the heart returns it to the body
So there are two basic pathways in the blood circulation
One pathway is from the heart to the lungs
To get oxygen from the lungs
And then the blood comes back to the heart
Then from the heart to the rest of the body
And back to the heart again
That's one complete cycle.
So basically that's how the heart works.
And anything that tramples with this continuous beating and circulation of the blood
It stops the body's functioning.
And that's what's indexed
So that tells you why it's very important for the heart to stay healthy
Remain functional and never stop
Because once it stops, life is indexed
Okay, so the doctor mentioned heartbeat
And he said 120,000 times
120,000 times
So for how many minutes or seconds can the heart stop beating?
And that can result in?
Yeah, for any length of time the heart stops beating
It's a real disservice to the body organs.
Especially the brain.
And other vital organs like the kidneys.
So usually the body can rarely tolerate the heart from not beating
For more than 2-3 minutes
Very loosely
So there's no place for the heart to stop beating.
That's why when people have what we call cardiac arrest
Cardiac arrest means the heart has stopped working.
Has stopped delivering blood to the body
That is why there is a need to immediately institute what we call basic life support
Which starts with what?
Chest compression and delivery of breaths
This is to ensure that the body organs do not suffer from that lack of blood supply
So that continues until the heart picks up
Because if the body remains like that
Before the heart picks up
Even if the person survives significant damage
The person may remain alive
But the brain won't function in a particular way.
So we don't allow the heart to remain without functioning
Yes, I think that's what I wanted to say
Okay, so I want to know
At what age do people start having heart complications?
Or is there a particular age to have heart problems?
There is no particular age
Because some people are unfortunate to be born with heart disease
So right from the moment you step into the world
You have heart disease
But as a common man
I'm sure you've heard of a hole in the heart.
Yes, hole in the heart
That's what we call VSE or OAC.
When the heart's partitions are not complete
That's one of the very common things that happens
So there are many other things that can happen to the blood vessels.
As I said, right from birth
So it tells you that someone can be born with heart disease
But beyond that
Other types of heart problems that we call acquired heart disease
Which a person is not born with
Can also be brought in even right from childhood
So there are various diseases that affect the heart
That's more common in childhood.
And there are others that are more common in adulthood
So there is no particular age
At any time, one can get acquired heart disease
As some people are actually born with heart disease
Okay, so doctor
I'd like to know specifically
For people with a family history of heart disease
Maybe age 45, say age 45
Their father died.
Or one of the parents died of a heart disease
What are the things they can do
To start living a healthy life
Like what healthy choices they can make
To start living a lifestyle that can help them
Probably when they get to that age.
Not to have the same
- I'm not.
I guess you're asking about
Acquired heart disease
Which most of the time are multifactorial
We call it multifactorial because
Genetics is not solely responsible for the expression
Of that heart disease
There are other inherited types of heart disease
Where other factors play less of an internal role
In the expression of the disease
Now for those
There's nothing you can do.
In terms of lifestyle and all that
That may prevent the expression of such a disease
Rather, treatment interventions may help in such cases
But in acquired heart disease
Where there is a genetic contribution component
To the expression of such diseases
Then
As a person
When you know
This tends to happen in my family.
Or a member of my family has had this
Or my parents.
You can leverage other factors
That contributes to those heart diseases
Working on those other factors
To prevent the genetic component from having an expression
I don't know if that's clear.
So that does happen
And what we advise people in such cases
Early life
You know,
You have to start taking some measures
In other words,
You have to start addressing the risk factors
That contributes to heart disease
Now those risk factors
The ones you can do things about
Are the modifiable ones
There are non-modifiable risk factors such as
You are a black man.
You can't change it.
You're grey, older
You can't change your age.
Maybe you're a female.
You can't change your gender.
There's nothing you can do about it.
So what other things like
Smoking and
You avoid smoking
Because it's a key risk factor when it comes to heart disease.
Salt intake
Salt is a major problem
Especially in
In people developing hypertension
And hypertension is a very strong risk factor for heart disease.
So we encourage people to take less salt
For salt and tissue
To make people prone to developing heart disease
Other aspects of diets
We encourage people to eat a lot of vegetables
A lot of fruit.
A lot of fruits that are rich in fiber
In potassium
And less fat
Particularly saturated fats
And when you say saturated fats
Those are fats that come mainly from animals
You know, cow meat.
Or other meat
They have a lot of fat.
So diets that are low in fat
And then also less in polyunsaturated fatty acids
Now when you adopt this lifestyle
Including things like regular exercise
Because the heart is an organ that
You can build its capacity
By getting involved in exercise
Usually we encourage people to exercise
That will be between 30 minutes to 1 hour
3 to 4 times a week
That's heart training.
It can be in the form of peace walking
Cycling
Running
Swimming and other things like that.
So exercise is also very important
Avoid this sedentary lifestyle
That also poses risks to heart disease
And then people who are obese
Obesity is a risk factor for heart disease
Those who have diabetes
Diabetes is also a very strong risk factor
And lifestyle also plays a very important role in diabetes
I talked about hypertension.
It's also very central
Rejection of alcohol
Also a very high risk of heart disease
So these are common things
That one can walk
When you walk at a distance
And then you reduce your risk
Of developing heart disease
When there is such a history in the family
I also want to know
How does high blood pressure affect your heart?
What is the connection between high blood pressure and the heart?
High blood pressure is
The single most important voice factor
That causes heart disease
In sub-Saharan Africa
Studies that have been done
Looking at heart disease
Has put hypertension
As the most common risk
And when you understand
What hypertension means
It means the pressure
At which blood is being delivered
Is being conveyed around the body
Is higher than normal
That's what hypertension means.
Because when the heart
Pushes the blood around the body
It has to do that at the pressure
There must be a pressure difference.
Between the heart
Where the blood will go to start
And the organ.
That's going to receive the blood
It's that pressure difference.
That ensures that the blood travels from the heart
To get to the organ
Now when the pressure at which
This event is happening.
That's what we call hypertension.
And then you'll agree with me that
When that happens
It means that
The pressure at which the blood reaches the organ
Is higher than it should be
And so that impact
On the organ is unnecessary
Because God designed the body
To operate at a particular pressure
Even the flow of blood
Through the blood vessels
When it does that at the higher pressure
It damages the walls.
And the lining of those vessels
That are carrying the blood
Because it's moving at a higher speed than normal
And so is the heart
That has to pump that blood
At a higher pressure
He's doing extra work.
That it's not supposed to do
It's supposed to deliver this blood
At a regulated pressure
Systolic between 90 and 140
That's how it's designed.
Once the heart is delivering blood
At a systolic pressure of 180
The heart has to do extra work.
To do that
In the process of the heart doing extra work
The heart is stretched
Once the heart is stretched
The muscles of the heart
Will want to meet that demand
So the heart muscles will start growing bigger
And then the heart will start to become muscular
That's the first thing that happens.
And that's what we discover
Most of the time.
When people do x-rays
They tell them their hearts are enlarged
That's where it starts.
Because...
The heart muscle is building up
It's like someone who does
Weight lifting every day
The muscle starts to grow
So that's what happens to the heart
Once it's functioning at high pressure
It's starting to get big.
And when you allow
The muscles to continue to grow
It will get to a point
Where the heart
It's a very large size.
But it doesn't have the energy
Like the law of the machine
Initially the heart will cook
And then do the job better
At high pressure
But as time goes on
The heart will now become very large
It doesn't have the energy
As before.
And so
The pressure now
To deliver it to the organs
Will now fall
There's no movement.
That's where you now start having
Complaints
From the patient
Sometimes.
They may increase in size
Of the heart
Start bringing discomfort in the chest
And then...
As the muscle has grown
The blood supply to the heart
Becomes insufficient
For the new size
Of the muscles
So, what?
The patient begins to experience
Chest pain
And that sheer increase
In the size of the heart
It distorts the architecture.
There are other things in the heart
Apart from the muscle
The heart also has
A power system
That
Delivers the impulse
The impulse.
That dictates the pace
At which the heart should beat
So when the heart is enlarged,
It distorts
That structural
That normal structure
It now opens the gates
For all the symptoms
The patient may start to have irregular heartbeats
Start becoming aware of heartbeats
Or sometimes the heartbeat is not regular
Start having chest pain
You start to get tired easily.
All these are features to show that
The heart is now tired
It has done this work
Where it can no longer cope
And...
At the extreme end of this
The heart will now begin to become
Dilated
It will start ballooning
That big muscle.
Will now start thinning out
And the heart will now become
Globular like a ball
And very weak.
At that point
We start to see the heart is failing
That's the spectrum.
Of what can happen to the heart
When you expose it to high blood pressure
Most of
People with heart disease
With heart failure
In
Sub-Saharan Africa
Among the blood
Hypertension is the single most common
Oh, I'm not.
Thank you for breaking this down.
We'll take a very short break.
But we will come back
We want to find out.
If really heartbreak has anything to do with
The heart actually breaking
So stay with us while we come back.
Leadership TV
For God
Country and
So welcome back.
Sir, I'm sorry.
Do we have any
Is there any relationship with
People going through a heartbreak
Or an emotional
The situation
And they're telling you that
My heart is broken
I can't. I can't.
You know, sometimes they're
Holding on to their hearts
And they're like,
I can 't take it.
I'm losing
Like,
What relationship does
Our hearts
It has to do with
The emotions
First of all,
I think
The seat of emotion
One.
It's not in the heart
But...
There is
A direct relationship
With
Between such events
And the function of the heart
- Yes, I did.
Um, I'm not.
Although I forgot to mention
Initially
One of the risks
We also talked about
Stress is
Stress is also a risk
And when you say stress
Stress can be emotional
So what you call heartbreak
Can be categorized
As emotional stress
Understand what I mean.
And when there is emotional stress
The body responds
And release
Some hormones
To respond
To that shock
Key among them
Are what we call
The catecholamines
They're counterproductive.
They put the heart
On the edge
They tend to
Increase the rate
Of the heartbeats
They tend to increase
The
The force at which
The heart is beating
And these two factors
Are key
In raising blood pressure
So when people
Have a broken heart
They have risk.
Of developing
High blood pressure
Because their heart rate
Tends to increase
The force of contractility
The heart increases
And therefore the blood pressure
Increases
Now, now.
If this is a momentary event
It is possible
The person will get over it.
And turn back to someone
If it was someone
Who is on the verge
Of developing hypertension before
This event
Will the person tip
In hypertension
And sometimes
Like I said.
It increases the heart rate.
For some people
It makes the heart beat
To become irregular
It compromises
The supply of blood
To the heart
And that's why
Sometimes people have that.
And then suddenly
They develop a heart attack.
Why? Why?
Because it compromises
Once there is no supply
Of blood to the heart
That's what we call
Heart attack or stroke
So people are also prone
To developing a heart attack
Even beyond the heart
People are also prone
To developing stroke
Because when blood pressure
It goes up.
The brain.
To the brain
Can be compromised
And if someone
Can develop a stroke
Just with that event
Of heartbreak
Like I said earlier on
There is a direct relationship
And this can be worked out
It's easy.
Just like a swim
We have to be careful.
Out there.
Who we are serving
Breakfast is served
Because the emotions
There is a connection.
With the heart
Just like the doctor said.
So doctor
What are the ways
We can deal with
Stress
To help us
To the better
Take care of our heart
You know that.
This is a stressful thing.
I'm doing it
This is a stressful situation.
Or sometimes
You just work.
And you know that.
The environment around work
Can be stressed up
What can you do?
It's better.
To manage stress
The first thing
I would say
We have to come
To recognize
The fact that
It's part of normal life.
Especially
Urban life
One has to face
One form of stress
Or the other one.
Being aware of that
In your mind
The mind.
In which you are
Put some stress on.
Is also a problem
If you take it
Too much.
You make it to
I bother you so much.
That alone
Becomes
An emotional stress
In its own
The stress
You go through it every day.
You settle and you know
This is what I know.
I have to go through
I don't need to
So bothered
So worried about
That's the first thing
Secondly,
You can.
Try to work out ways
How can I
Make this thing
Lighter for myself.
Find the
Periods of
Of break
Moments of break
And relaxation
Even in the middle
Of the stress
What are you doing?
Simpler ways
I can get things done.
To reduce the stress
Other
Extra
Curriculum
Activities
You can engage in
After the whole
A stressful day.
And whatever.
That will help you
To water
The effect of that stress
These are some of the things
You may have to consider
In order to
Go through the stress
But the truth is
There is no
Modern life
One can live
That you can
- I'm totally fine.
Excluding
Stress events
Try to achieve
Anything in life
There is a measure
Of stress
And that will
Help you.
So thank you.
I also wanted
To find out
Is there
A particular
The check-up
That can be done.
For a heart
I can just walk.
In the hospital.
And say
I want my heart
Checked
- I know.
- I certainly do.
Even based on
What we have
I just said
If you know
You are exposed.
Too much stress
Then you must
Also check yourself
You have.
The problem before
Maybe you are.
It's expensive.
Or diabetic
Or have you?
A heart condition
You need to be
Consistent
In your medication
And check yourself
Regularly
For people who
I have not
Any problems
It doesn't.
Excluding you.
From checking
Because as
Adults
We have
It is.
The current
On every person
To make
Our time
As adults
To check
They themselves.
There are
Basic things
To do
That doesn't
I need so much
And that
We flag
Any major
The problem
That you have
In your system
At least.
Before you.
Go further.
Some other
Advanced things.
You do.
The simplest
They will.
Flag it
If there is
Something significant.
Something major.
Speaking in terms of
Your heart health
Cardiovascular health
Those little ones.
The following are the baseline values:
Will you flag it?
Which will now
Open the window.
For doing
Higher tests
And stuff.
Turn around
Your blood pressure
It doesn't cost
Almost nothing.
And it is.
Advisable
You can buy
A BP machine
But if you don't have that
You can always walk.
To a
Blue Cycle
Or a
Pharmacy
Clinic and clinic
This time
Check your blood pressure
Every 3 months
Or every 6 months
It's not a problem.
That is if you are not
That's the best thing.
That you do
Almost at no cost
Then two.
You check your blood sugar.
Diabetes is also
A very serious
Risk of heart disease
Regular check of blood sugar
Or fasting blood sugar
Testing in the morning
To check your blood sugar
That is also very important.
You can check your urine.
Or we call it a urinalysis.
These are very simple things.
Do a urinalysis
Cost more than
The amount of the loan is:
You have to pay for it.
These are the basics.
Other things you can do
ECG
It is also
Basic
So much.
That looks
Deeper
Into the heart
If you have
Heart problems
Or you have hypertension
That's affecting
Your heart.
A simple EKG
It will show some abnormality.
That will now
Indicate whether
You have something.
More than that.
Something like
Lipid profile
That's checking
Your cholesterol is
It's important.
It's becoming
It's a common thing.
In this part of the world
And one of the
The greatest risk
The development
Has high cholesterol
These things.
Can be checked
In the clubs
Something one can do
Maybe once a year.
Or once every six months.
Then you can also check
Your kidney function
All these
Are basic things
You can access
Without much difficulty.
Every adult
It is recommended
Or...
Maybe things like
Renal function
Once in two years.
You can do these things.
And you're sure that
Nothing serious.
Will be happening
And you know
You have to do it.
Precautions
Usually
Prevention is actually better
Than cure
Just like the doctor.
He told us
But before we come to
His speech.
I wanted to
Ask you like
Three basic questions
Number one is
What are the things
They don't really tell us
About the heart.
That you think
We should know.
And then number two is
Are there any
Things.
We're so used to
Hearing
But it's not true
Okay first.
The basic information
We need to know
We have been discussing
The heart.
It's a very important organ.
Can get sick
And when the heart
He gets sick.
It's usually
A very risky thing.
Is it an emergency?
You may not get
Attention, please.
As quickly as
As you should.
If you allow.
Things to go back to
It's very important.
To take care of
Of our hearts
And the other things
We've already discussed this.
But talking about
Some things.
That people
Hold on.
That's not true.
People used to think
That high blood pressure
It's about thinking
It's a very very
Falsely reported
When you
Maybe I did.
You check your blood pressure.
Discover it is high
They ask you
What are you thinking about?
Or maybe you're not married.
You're not married.
And your blood pressure is high.
You don't have a family.
Is a disease
And needs to be treated.
It's very important to know that
It's not about thinking
That needs to be treated.
Two.
I'm focusing on high blood pressure.
Because it's the
Communist thing around
Among all adults
In Nigeria
Every three to four adults
Have high blood pressure
And less than 30%
Of these people are aware
So most people
Having high blood pressure
They're walking on the streets
They don't know
That's why people sleep.
They don't wake up.
That's why people
Taking a presentation
And you fall down
And die.
And people have heart attacks
And all sorts of things happen
Because of
High prevalence of high blood pressure
It's a disease
That anyone can develop
Any time
In his life
And it is earlier
Among the blacks
It occurs earlier
It's without thinking
And when you develop
It has no cure.
There are a lot of them out there.
Who are suffering
Because of a condition
They can't cure
For high blood pressure
There is no cure.
What we do
For people with high blood pressure
Are we treating it?
And medication
Is for life
Once you have
Your medication
You are gone.
When you go off
Your blood pressure goes up
So there are
Misconceptions about the
What causes
About the
The treatment
That can cure
Low blood pressure
You can live
Your whole life
Stop taking
The implications of that
Is this
If I have
Once I start
Taking drugs
My blood pressure
It comes down to
Way up.
So there is no
Difference between
The two of us.
The only difference is that
I swallow drugs.
To get the same pressure
With you.
So that's what
People need to understand
That it can be
Effectively managed
And don't be fooled
When you are told
That it can be cured
Or treatment
Can be cured
Is timed
When you take it
For two weeks.
Take it for two months.
- No, not at all.
Treatment
I think these are
All of them.
Emotions that people
Have you
To express better
I have.
I have been
Scolded by
By
Dr. Shidari, I'm not sure.
This is so
It's so
Amazing that
To find out that
He said something.
Very important.
He said
When the heart
It's an emergency.
And I think
We don't all need
To get to the point.
Where our hearts are sick
To become
So the reason why
We need to
Check ourselves out.
On a daily basis
You can easily
Walk with me.
Like he said.
Walk into a
Or anywhere else.
And ask them to do a
Blood pressure check
So that way
We are conscious.
Health and safety
On the second notion
Where he talked about
Not being treatable
Please.
Let's take
It is important
If there are like
Three people out there.
And they don't even
Have an idea.
They don't even know
That they have
That's a serious
Emergency
So we should all
Check ourselves.
And make sure
We continue to live
Our healthiest life
For coming
Thank you for
Honoring
We are glad
To have you
It's a pleasure.
To be here
I appreciate it.
