I'm going to go to an exhibition at my local museum today.
It's about dinosaurs and why they became extinct.
Let's find out about extinct and endangered animals.
And what we can do to protect the animals that are still on our planet.
Extinction is when the last member of an animal species dies.
One of the most well-known examples of an extinct animal is the dinosaur.
Dinosaurs became extinct about 65 million years ago.
Scientists believe that a meteorite hit the earth and that this killed half of the animals on the planet.
Including the dinosaurs.
Another example of an animal that became extinct is the dodo.
Dodos were birds that couldn't fly.
They lived on Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean.
When human beings arrived on the island, they killed the dodos.
Today, many animals are endangered.
That means that they might become extinct in the future.
Animals such as polar bears, tigers, rhinos and elephants are endangered.
People hunt and kill these animals for their fur and for sport.
Pollution is also a danger to animals.
And cutting down forests.
Human beings change the habitats that animals live in.
Making it hard for the animals to survive.
What can we do to protect endangered animals?
We can stop buying products made from endangered animals.
Help clean up beaches.
Plant trees.
And make our gardens better for wildlife.
Okay. Question time.
Do you remember the difference between an endangered species and an extinct species?
That's right.
An extinct species means that there aren't any animals of that species alive.
An endangered species is one that might become extinct one day.
Okay. It's time for the dinosaur exhibition.
After that, I'm going to help my friends clean up the river in my town.
See you next time. Bye!
