I'm starting a new day here in Guatemala. Today we have returned to dawn in Antigua
and we are going to do a two-day excursion to a volcano called La Catenango. We are doing
it through an agency, you have different options in the area. In our case we are doing it
through Soy Tours. If it goes well or not, I will recommend it at the end of the same.
And it's going to be a tough climb, especially because of the altitude we are at. The route
starts at 2,200 meters and goes up to 3,700. We are going to climb a volcano where we will
spend the night, in some tent tents, with bags and such. Everything is already prepared
up there. And the issue is that you have to carry a lot of luggage, because then at night it
cools down a lot up there, which I will tell you about. But hey, it's going to be, it's probably
going to be quite interesting. How about you, Carlos? How do you see yourself in strength?
Well, at the moment, well. But we will see how the process goes.
Yes, we have literally, I don't know, 15 minutes of climb and it's like five hours, right?
In total. Well, for the five hours.
Yes, that is, it's five hours, more or less, of climb, to eat, then we'll have dinner upstairs and such.
We are getting to one of the breaks. This is quite hard, especially if the sun is out,
because the body temperature rises a lot. But hey, the thing is that here we are doing
small breaks and you can feel a little more relaxed.
We just made a second stop here on the climb. We have been there for about two and a half hours,
more or less. In half an hour we will eat. And it has improved a lot now, in this second part,
you are much more involved in what is the forest, the mountain. In the first part it is a little more
like between areas of crops, of the locals. So the path was also very narrow,
plus the people who are going down, those who started yesterday. So now it is much better,
you are already ... The temperature is going down, and you want us to be grateful because you are already
soaked today, with sweat. So I can't imagine if this were totally exposed and the sun hit us in the face.
It is feasible for everyone, it is simply to regulate your energy based on your abilities,
but well, technically it does not have greater complexity than the one it has on the climb itself.
We are already about 3,000 meters high. We have passed a foggy or humid forest, I don't know what this is.
Humid. Are they still there? Now yes, the compass marked 3,000 for me.
When you hire the tour, they will send you a series of items that you have to bring,
such as shelter clothes and such. And one of the things that more weight on top means is to bring four
liters of water, because you already see that you sweat a lot, so you have to recover liquids,
especially for the climb. But you don't need to bring so much, because for example,
now where we are stopping to eat, there is a stand where they sell you. You can buy both
soft drinks, coffee, water. They have a bit of everything, so well, if you see that you have a backpack
that is not very big or you don't want to carry so much weight, then you have that option of
unloading a bit this way.
We are already arriving at the place of our camp. It's two o'clock and a bit, we're going to get there
at three o'clock. We have taken quite a while at the end, about three, four or five hours. And well,
I already tell you, it is very feasible, simply that as it is a constant slope, it makes it
harder. With that and the altitude, and having to carry the weight is what makes it difficult,
but going more calmly, the breaks that are made, you get there very well. Now we have about 20
minutes left, more or less, we are already at the camp where we are going to sleep. And well,
then there will be more things that I will explain later. Now we will be at about 3,500 meters
of altitude and little by little it is being noticed.
We have already reached the top and well, I think it is not the top, but it is where the base camp is,
we are at 3,700 meters right now. Very cool in the end, I mean, the views from above are
impressive. The sun is hitting me quite hard, so bring a lot of sunscreen. And the
temperature in general is quite pleasant, because as we are at altitude, it drops a lot and with
the mixture of the sun right now it is very good, but it will go down to zero degrees,
minus five, it may vary, but it will be around that. And now we are waiting to see if there are explosions
from the volcano. We are going to see if we make the route to the volcano, which I will explain now,
but now they have shown us what our room is going to be, our suite for tonight. And you see
that here everything is going to be very rustic, very intimate, each one with their space. This is
our tent, here is Carlos setting up all his things. And nothing, and here inside,
two bags. The floor is a mattress, so it is quite soft, so well, we cannot ask for more, it is quite good.
I am going to take advantage of the last moments of light that are left, there are no more than a few minutes left.
After going straight up to 3,700 meters, at the top of the catenango, we have been seeing a
few explosions of the volcano of fire, which is the one we have here behind, and one of the
additional activities that you can do as part of the excursion is to come to the volcano of fire itself.
It is an extra, that is, it is totally voluntary. In fact, there are people who have stayed there quietly
in the tents, in the tents of the campaign, because it refreshes a lot and the road is extra, it is
also quite hard. It is again, it is a descent and then an ascent. So the descent, as it is quite
earthy and such, it is easy to slip, so it is better to come with sticks and that. And then an ascent that
already with the altitude and such, because it is noticeable, but hey, little by little, in the end it is achieved.
And we got to this point, which is where you can see an incredible image of the volcano of fire, which is
this one that I tell you is back here. And now what we are waiting for is for it to finish
getting dark and to see if the volcano erupts. And you can see not only the ash explosions
that we have seen from afar, but also be able to see some lava. So let's see if we see some kind of reddish color.
We are already returning. There has been a spectacular explosion, all the lava has been seen jumping. It is a shame
I could not record it well because at night it is super difficult to record and it has been a few seconds
and I have not had time to set the camera configuration well, but believe me that it has been
totally incredible how the lava has jumped, on top of that, so close, it is a few hundred
meters and it is one of the most impressive things I have seen in my life.
The truth is that I am recording like this because we are already returning totally dark and it is complicated.
We are here already in the tent, in the tent. It has been, there is Carlos, around the corner, you can kind of see it.
And well, the route has been quite difficult, it has been 2,000 meters of altitude accumulated,
only the alternative, this additional one that we have done now, plus the beginning that has been a thousand and a bit more.
1,400.
1,400 and a terrain that is not easy at all, neither to go down nor to go up, because to go down it is more dangerous,
you are kind of falling all the time because it is all earth moved and it is complicated.
And nothing, but well, it was worth it, we have been very lucky because there have not been many eruptions with lava.
And we have seen just one of them when we were there in the viewpoint and the truth is that it has been impressive.
That has been big and you were just close.
Yes, it has been a shame that it lasted a few seconds, but it has been impressive.
And there were other groups that were coming later and they have not been as lucky, they have gone up and down and they have not seen anything.
So, well, it looks super good.
And then we have come back here and we have had dinner, they have already set up a little bonfire,
they have already been cooking some noodles with mashed beans and mashed potatoes.
And well, but I was not hungry, I have eaten it because I know that my body needs it,
but after the beating I just need to rest.
And a hot chocolate, that would have gone very well.
And little else, so let's close.
It's not late, it's nine o'clock at night, but it's the beating we've had.
It has been very intense.
Yes, and in the end it has been 12 hours since we have started walking, with very little rest.
And tomorrow at 4 in the morning they wake us up to see the sunrise and we have to go up another 45 minutes to the top.
And then all the way down.
We still have a long way to go, so let's see if we can rest here,
if we don't get too cold and tomorrow we'll tell you more.
We woke up at 4 in the morning to be able to come to the summit at dawn,
because we are at 3,700 meters, but the crater, the summit of the Acatenango is at 4,000,
and that is where we are now, in the crater of the Acatenango.
Luckily it is a sleeping volcano.
Here in Guatemala there are about 37 volcanoes, which are mainly the best known.
And here there are several that can be seen on the horizon,
and the truth is that the sunrise is spectacular.
The colors of how the orange comes out behind the volcano,
and on top of that how it is covering with the clouds different cities,
like the one down here, it is totally beautiful.
We have already finished the excursion through the Acatenango.
The descent in the end has been much more feasible than we thought,
it has not been so difficult because we thought that we were going to slip a lot,
and well, there have been mists, but in general quite well.
I didn't fall in the end.
And then, well, it has been, I don't know, two hours, three hours of descent,
up to well, and in general the excursion very well.
I recommend the company, it is true that it has some little things,
like, for example, the fact of making stops every so often quite long,
with which in the end a lot of people pass by.
Well, some little things, but details, in general, it is quite recommendable.
In the end they will all be very similar,
and this one in particular is quite economical,
and the experience, the truth is that it is amazing, very beautiful.
The climb there, all that is hard, but the views from above are impressive,
at night, at dawn, everything has been spectacular,
so if you think you can have the physical condition,
well, it is something that is very worth it.
And we are already back in Antigua,
and our plan now is to go to the hotel,
see if they let us in, take a shower, change, eat something,
and then, well, already visit the city with more tranquility,
since we don't have the Flower Festival,
well, we will have more, there is not so much crowd of people,
so we will be able to visit all the main points better,
and that, quietly.
