哇哦
we're gonna talk about art
and objects
what is art
art can be so many things
i know a lot of people think art is just something
that is a sculpture or something
you can hang on the wall
but art can also be furniture
it can be a light fixture
it can be a chair
so many things
that is one of the things I so love about what I do
because I get to see and work with
so many different incredible artisans and artists
and bring magic into my interiors
if you're unsure about what you want to start collecting
look at what you actually have a lot of
because that might give you an idea
of what you want to continue to collect
if you have a love of fashion
that's a great place to start
and jewelry for example
or scarves
or I started
or jackets
or you like sequins
or you love shoes
how do you want to showcase that
maybe you want to build
shelving unit in your bedroom
and showcase all of your amazing shoes
maybe you have a chair fetish
I do
let your curiosity guide you
go to a gallery
go to a tapestry store
or go to a bookstore
and learn about something
that you might not know anything about
collecting in itself
is an adventure
and it is a journey
there was a client in New York
and she collected
earrings and rings
those are the things that she absolutely loved
and she asked how can I display these
so there was a niche
in this entry vestibule for home
and we put in a secret door
and you open the door
and it's all of these amazing bowls
and they're filled with her jewelry
and all the bowls were found
and collected from different sources
and it's magic
and she can see everything
it's clear
there are no drawers
and she just said it makes her so happy
I began collecting teapots
and so I had to mask this collection
and I wanted to showcase it
and you actually can't see it in the dining room
but it's behind doors
but when I open them
it like just evokes this amazing emotion
of sculpture and beauty
and things that I can share with my guest
if I'm at home
and I want to have tea
and I go in my cabinet
and I get this teapot
and I sit alone
and whether I'm looking at a book
or I'm on my computer
and I have this moment
and it reminds me of a time
and it reminds me of a place
a lot of these things that you collect
are super personal
and you don't have to overthink it
an experience doesn't have to be a room
an experience can be an object
an experience can be something
that happens unexpectedly
like for example
a client wanted a bar in their living room
and there just wasn't room
so I found a vintage bar
that looks like a robot
and so when they entertain
the robot's little arms come down
and the bar is open
and it's just taking this unique piece
a unique situation
and making it magical
I was working on a project
a hotel project in San Francisco
and the interior architecture was historic
We knew we needed to do something
that celebrated the architecture
but also had a voice and created design
This is where I knew
art was going to be our vehicle
We could not change
any of the interior architecture
Also the lobby had to be white
What can I do to give it its own voice
and to make the space sing
We also wanted to celebrate the location
That's where we decided to make the art
all San Francisco artists
It was a really fun exercise
curating and finding
and working with a bunch of galleries
and doing research online
We actually found one of the pieces
at a gallery in London
So we were really bringing
all of these treasures back home
This is actually the first time
that I really did a gallery wall
We amassed this really cool collection of art
and there are many different forms and medium
There were photographs
wall sculptures
three-dimensional pieces
mirrors
When we gathered all these pieces
I actually didn't know
where they were going to go
So we brought everything to the lobby
I just started with one piece
and then I put another piece in another area
and I really was looking at
how the light was affecting
some of these pieces
and then I just started
and I actually
It was like a collage
It was a real true life collage
that I put together
and it took about two months
to completely finish
because I would say
Oh there's like an empty hole there
and then I would go out
and I knew exactly what size I needed
and then I would install that piece
It looks like a work of art itself
Here I started with one large piece
and I really looked at balance and symmetry
Then I installed the pieces around it
Each one of the pieces
that I placed next to
the larger piece of art
There was something that was different
and whether it was the medium
It was the size
or it was the placement
Like what is the spacing
Why did I place something two inches
from the large piece of art on one side
and only an inch
And it's because
the piece of art was maybe more powerful
or it needed a little more negative space
Some of the pieces were vintage
and some were contemporary
because we wanted to bring
that old spirit and new spirit
which is really important
in how I design
It's how I dress
Something old and something new
If you want to do a gallery installation
at your home
diversify your medium
Don't think that you have to have
a wall filled with just photographs
or you have to have a wall
filled with ceramic pieces
or tapestries
Mix your medium
Feel free
Do what feels good in your eye
and create some tension
and beauty
A focal point in a room
is something
where your eye immediately goes to
It could be a bench
It could be a light fixture
a sofa
It's the dominant piece in the room
It's a thing that your eye goes to
and immediately tells the story
So this art
that I found
was by a surrealist artist
who was from San Francisco
We had this fireplace
that had this checkerboard tile
I wanted something
that had a focal point
That was a small piece
that was really important
that did not fight
with the graphic of the tile
on the fireplace
And now when you come into
this restaurant
it's a focal point
Small pieces can be just as powerful
as large pieces
Scale is really interesting
I always thought that
if you had
two pieces of art in the room
they had to be about the same size
but that is so not true
You could have a huge wall
and a tiny piece of art
The art is so important
Or you could have a tiny wall
and a large piece of art
It's just unique and cool
and it adds drama and interest to the space
So don't feel because you have a large wall
that you have to have a large piece of art
