Tucked away high in the mountains of Montana we discovered the Helca Mining District. Once a thriving industry, now all that remains are several mining cabins, the mill ruins, and further along the road the smelter and coke ovens.

from our location high up in the Montana
mountains again just just beyond Tonto
up there in the distance there is
another
structure don't know what kind of shape
it is there's supposed to be a few more
in the yeah there's several in the woods
according to Google Earth and then we've
got this one here right in front of
us and then a smaller one over that
direction so this we'll just walk in and
see what's in there they're not in the
best of shape
you can kind of see how wonky that
is probably oh are you okay yep probably
there probably not going to be much left
in
these Ser some remnants of
insulators look at that wallpaper up
here it's got a pattern on
it is that pretty oh it would have been
yeah of a floral like
pattern and then all
uh all ground
so see how everything's
shifted looks like all the wood that's
on the floor
now could have been from up top some of
this might be flooring as well but you
see how the ground is just completely
undulating through here you should see
the back here you can see it even
more cuz it's hard to tell if there was
wood floors throughout oh yeah there is
you can see wow and look at there's an
old bed frame in the corner but look at
the way the the floor is that's that an
old uh cooker stove of some sort looks
like
it and through the window it's
just complete devastation that was a a
wall
that's falling down now separate so that
must be bedroom back there I would
assume kitchen
here well they have what 10 15 ft of
snow up
here yeah and look at that I mean just
the how get a better angle on it on the
wall
just devastated this whole hm what do
you think blue
no I thought that but well I guess it
could have been the L and then that's
your vent pipe
OD
maybe
strange strange yeah okay on to the next
one well I guess you would want to uh go
out in 10t of snow to go for a pee pee
or a poop
poop this looks a bit marshy we've just
seen making our way over to that other
structure
that this stream goes right underneath
the foundations of the house no wonder
why
it's being moved and torn
apart imagine with the snow melt and
everything else how big this must get
well this is a whole area of marsh cuz
you've got another stream here and I
think this could still be
um I can hear it snow melt
mhm on approach and you can see this
one is in much the same state as the the
other even with the Log Cabin style see
the
the chinking is actually breaking out of
the and you can actually see the chop
marks yeah the hand hun
Timbers and is
that just one room cabin
here see the roof is
still oh they've see there they had the
vent hole right there but it's covered
with like tar paper some type of a say
this black paper
hanging you got little baby Christmas
trees outside oh you got these
huge
Nails sticking out which looks like
there could have
been possibly shelving hanging off
of though over there on that back wall
by the cupboard and over the window know
they do have bra brackets
so perhaps that was for hanging clothing
items you got shows there
mhm maybe Christmas
tree these people did have to go outside
got to say it no trip would be complete
without a trip to the
L and here's also another look back at
the uh the tin roofing
I can kind of get
a Grand View of the
landscape yeah I I can't remember how
many mines there are I think there are
about a dozen or so in the
area and uh what people have found bits
and
pieces I don't if they found it
underneath that's where the Min is used
to keep their Treasures wasn't
it and they got some more uh wild
potentilla at least I think it's
potentilla that's what it looks like to
me there's a a Remnant here looks like
it would have
been driving a belt here so maybe for
uh some Crushers Rock Crushers I know
behind
us up on the
hill might be able to get a glimpse up
Just Between the
Trees massive pile of just rocks waste
rock there and then further along this
Trail there's another looks like a
structure remains of there's
uh
some wire wheels
for wire oh right yeah the
wood for wire electricity May or no
yeah so two of
those people normally tip those over and
use them as a tables in their Gardens
good idea yeah and then there's a oh
okay remains of an Orbin I believe up
here yeah there's a bunch
of okay perhaps this was the this could
be the mill Mill site y with the looking
at these rock walls stone walls so you
got the pile of wood down
here the
section yeah wow I think so
it's always it's neat too it's just like
hidden in the forest and then it reveals
itself itself when you're right on top
of
it so
neat okay I walked up a little
further right at the
bottom of like where the
stamps look like would have been you've
got a series of the shoots coming
down four of them two there two
here this is where the train gets a
little more tough
going let's get a closer look at
the
Alice chers company number
77c Milwaukee Wisconsin
keeping up the water
now we're being
watched I thought it was a bear first of
all there two of
them just looking at us going what in
the hell are you doing and listening us
to us Shout at the Bears yeah
well if the cows aren't frightened of us
shouting I don't know whether a bear
would be
H we got we have got our bear spray
Yeah Boy tell we're uh we're at
elevation I'm out of
breath I think just right up
there by the cow is the tippy top of the
the mill site here
we'll just have a quick Gander around
that and we did spot another building or
so in the
distance and we'll get back to
you so as
Steven isn't feeling very well because
of the
altitude I'm just going to
continue this is another
cabin and you can see all the
um all the material hanging still from
the ceiling and from the walls and I
just put my hand straight through a
cobweb so two
rooms nothing much
left let's go through
here the second
room all the floor's gone away oh wonder
if that was a basement you know like a
food storage
you got another room back
there and
then Little P whoa oh nearly fell there
little
porch see all the
sacking and the
tin and the
material still with the pattern on
it and you can see in the corner how
they've actually used Lids of
tins to patch up the
corner nothing goes to
waste stove
pipe over
there and uh pickley pickley floor so
those are the rooms that we looked
through and another entrance I'm not
going to go down
there right let's make our way back out
to see
steo oh oh there's several down here
actually so we've got three three more
over
there at least and then this
one isn't
anymore so let's make our way over to
those other ones oh how exciting see you
just never know what you're going to
discover hidden by behind a
tree look at that 1 2
3 4
five I can see now we're going to have
to cross this little stream without
getting
wet how you
feeling so I'm just going to walk around
with
this I'm used to giving out all the
historic stuff rather than ad libing
about cabins and what have you oh hang
on a
minute look what I've
spied on the on the
roof solar
panels somebody's been doing this cabin
up let walk around the outside first
just in case there's no trespassing
signs I don't think there is otherwise
there would have been one on the door
you can see the the new roof and the new
the new
boarding well I never now we
are
about 15 miles from the main road I
believe maybe maybe a little bit more
than
that uh steep climb you can see the
mountains
that's where we came from way way way
over
there the road is okay getting up here
you do need high clearance 4x4 obviously
but uh we didn't have to do any
bouldering or or anything like that so
Tonto made it with
these
okay let's uh see what we've got in this
cabin
knock
knock
ah someone's put plexiglass in there so
that is a window
now this is
actually public land
so I'm not sure unless they're doing it
like a volunteer cabin let's pop that
look that back
up let's try the front
door knock
knock anybody home
wow can smell
paint let's get the torch
out so they've got a little
stove they put plexiglass in the window
they stove there
you can smell paint and furbishing
and got
table with some bits and
pieces
sofa some soes a
clock clock on the wall there and a load
of batteries so I'm actually not going
to venture in any further I am wondering
whether or not this is going to be a
volunteer
cabin but uh as I said there's no no
private or no trespassing signs
up but still you never know and this is
a world documented area it's uh we've
seen three side by sides since uh we've
been up here nicely locked up right
let's go and Venture and have a look at
some other
cabins so those are the cabins that
we've just come
from we've crossed a
stream Steven's sitting down over there
another side by side's just come past
actually let's take a
look oh let's take a look at this cabin
me huffing and puffing
had a sod roof at some point you can
see two
rooms
wow look at the
floorboard I would imagine this room
would have been the
bedroom and then through
there would have been the
kitchen let's go
around there and I would say
possibly that might have been an
ouse but yes
and
again you've got
um all the fabric hanging down like they
used to have at tent
cities all right we're going to see that
cabin
now so by the looks of it this could
possibly be 2
cabins but again bit worse for wear they
have so much snow up
here so it's all again hickley
pickley s the wood
now I'm also looking for animal
footprints
too looks like there used to be a stove
in that corner there and yet again you
got that fancy wallpaper fabric
wallpaper so I would
imagine that a family or at least a
woman would have lived here
couldn't see an old hardcore Miner
bothering with uh fancy wallpaper
somehow oh okay so it's not two cabins
it's one that had
extensions again wondering whether or
not maybe
extensions for family children possibly
you got
another
brick chimney
there so yeah I would say possibly
add-ons for
kids that's what I'm going with
anyway yeah smart have it in the middle
[Music]
so here we are at Canyon Creek
charcoal KS built late
1800s now did you know that the charcoal
from here was taken down to
Glendale
smelter by horse and cart back in the
day you can actually still smell
it burning smell also always
sound now I wonder
why we haven't seen them built so close
together as these they're normally in a
line like the ones at Trona I think
there's 12 of them and they're always in
a line these are grouped together which
I
find really hard because when they they
they put all the wood in there they
close it up and that's what the hole is
at the top they then put more wood on
top and then close that don't they but
I've noticed that some of them are
white it looks like so a lot of them
have
got these
but it's been taken
off oh okay so they
showing you how it's done so they put
all the wood in light it they seal this
door up and then they carry on topping
it up from the window and that's where
the uh where the smoke comes out that's
where it
vents is my understanding
anyway and
unfortunately there's no sign at all
it's totally gone you would like to
