How I organized my job search strategy

Job Search Strategies

Organizing your job search is one of the most important task in your job hunt strategy or job
search process. Yet, we don't give so much importance to it. That's why we're going to
talk about it in this video. Let's go. Whenever you start job search, this is what you're going
to do. You're going to spend about one to two hours every single day. You're going to apply
to five to ten companies every single day. And then that is roughly about, you know, 25 to 50
job application and roughly 100 to 200 job application per month. That is a lot of job
applications to remember which company you apply to, which company is doing what, when is your
interview and keeping track of all of this in your head is impossible. That's why you need to create
some form of job application tracker or organize this job search in a much better way so that it
gives you mental clarity. It helps you focus on what you need to do next. I quickly want to talk
about two reasons why you should organize your job search. Number one reason is, like I said,
you will be applied to about 100 to 200 job applications. And sometimes what happens is
something you applied on week one, you might not even get interviews until week five. And by that
time you have applied to 100 job applications and you don't even remember what was the job
description of that job. And if you're someone like me who's trying to keep all this in your
brain, it's too much to remember. You can't go back in your brain and it was like, what was this
role and what was this position? Maybe you will try to look up online and maybe you'll try to look
up which job portal you had because each company might have a different job portal they are using
for you to fill out your profile and all of that. So it's going to be really hard to remember. Your
human brain is not going to be capable to remember all of these details. That's why you need to
create second brain or also job application tracker. So that's number one reason. Number two reason is
to iterate and improve on your job search. What I mean by that is as and when you start getting
interview calls, you want to remember questions and answers they asked you. So creating your
question bank and also one other important thing you should do is listing down your answers. So as
you list down your answers, as you list down your questions, so every single time the interview
happens, you can refer back to the notes. It's like, okay, this is what they asked me. This is what I
said. It didn't work out. So let's improve it. Then you keep improving it, improving, improving.
Now at the end, like if you have 10 interviews, you have plenty of questions to go back and forth.
So no matter when you do next job search, you have the question bank and this document ready
for you to refer anytime you want to. Now you're going to ask me, Hey Uri, how do I organize my
job search? I have multiple ways to do it. I actually use different tool, but I want you to
get started with just simple organizing your job search through Google spreadsheet. All right,
this is a simple tracker, which I built. And again, I will leave the link of this tracker.
If you want to use this, I would highly recommend you to have at least these columns,
feel free to add more if you want to. But again, this is a very basic version. I have actually more
advanced version of it, which I didn't want it to do it in this video. I want to do it in the next
follow-up video. Here's the first thing, which is job posting URL. Again, it's really easy to
just copy paste the URL. So you have it. Sometimes they will remove that posting.
So this will become irrelevant, but at least while, while they have it, you can keep it here.
What is the role which you're applying for a company's name, all the companies you are
applying for. So in my case, all these companies I was applying for, again, you might have the
list of a hundred companies and you can list down every single company you want to apply for.
This is a cool dropdown feature in Google spreadsheet, which you can use.
These are some of the statuses. Again, you can add more statuses if you want to,
and it can be like negotiating. I applied rejected, and then you can even like, I can
create a filter right here. And I can just say like only show me the ones which I am,
you know, clear all only show me the one which I'm interviewing right now.
So all of this will be now like interviewing one location. Where is this company located?
Then this is important. Again, keep this very, very important. A lot of time people
be so excited that they forget about it. They think so short term that it's only the time of
their job search, but this is how you build relationship and network. You have recruiters
name and recruiters email because you keep in touch with them. Even though you didn't work out
maybe six months or a year later, you want to reach back out to this recruiter. You can just
email them directly. Now this is where it gets really interesting, where you have a reference
contact. If you have like one, two multiple, then use it, right? So I, what I do is I use the name
and then I link that LinkedIn profile. So I can quickly go to that profile and do it. If you have
email, then use that email phone number, obviously put that phone number if you get the phone number,
but this three column again is super important. And again, when you go to my advanced version of
this, you will also see like when was the last time you reached out to that contact and what
did they say? And then the cold email technique and all of that. This is just a simple version
of it to get you started. This is when did you apply? When did you apply for that job application?
When was the last contact? Like when did they talk to you or when did they responded to you?
This is another thing where you might have different resume. I had like one for program
manager, one for product manager. So each resume you can attach here and then you,
that way you can go back and review it. If you are interviewing already, then you know,
if you start getting offers, then you can add offer details. It will be easy for you to compare
like, okay, this one is giving me this and this, and this is all fake data. This is the most
important column, job description, which is why you want to do this. Like for example, in this
case, these are the, I mean, again, I'm assuming this is the position. So if this person, this
recruiter call you back, you can quickly look at this and you're like, okay, they are looking for
me to do this market research agile. So you can like, when you are answering it, you know what
and review back. Another cool thing is job interview questions, interview questions and
answers, right? So if they asked you like, you know, 10, 15 behavioral questions, especially
for product manager, program manager, you can write down the questions they asked you and then
the answers you gave. So you can reiterate next time when you're doing it and it creates a question
bank for you. Okay. And again, like look at it. I have about a hundred plus companies, right? So,
and you might be seeing more, you don't want to like apply as soon as you see it. Maybe you want
to do more things. You want to read the description. You want to tweak your resume a little
bit. You want to reach out to the contact before you apply all those things. So you can filter down
all your not started list. And, and then next day, when you wake up, you have like five position,
you are like really interested in, and then you go at it versus you're actually browsing
in LinkedIn and figuring out which one to apply and not apply. This is really, really like going
to make you productive in your job search. I will highly recommend you to start doing this. That's
it for this video. I wanted to keep it super short and to the point again, just get started
with some form of organizing your job search. It could be as simple as just spreadsheet tracker.
I have done this and I know many of the guests who come on our podcast, they also do it.
So I just wanted you to see how to do it and get you started on this process. I hope this
was helpful. If it was helpful, consider subscribing, comment below if you have any
further question on this topic. And again, like I said, there's going to be a lot more. I'm going
to bring recruiters, hiring managers. We're going to be talking a lot more on the job search process
and there's going to be advanced tracker coming very soon. So stay tuned. I will see you guys in
the next one. Until then, keep smiling and keep busting. You gotta hustle every single day.
