4 Job Search Strategies. Today we’re talking about 4 different ways you can job search. If you are job hunting or thinking about a new job, this one’s for you!
Hello, I'm Cassandra and I am your
Career coach. I am here to help take the overwhelm out of the job search process
We are going live and it's a little bit off from what it was supposed to be
different, um live
setup
So thank you for bearing with me. I know i'm a couple minutes late and it's on a whole new
stream i'm hoping others see this and now we'll come over but
Today we are talking about four job search strategies that I want to discuss with you
So whether you are watching this live or you are watching, you know
Three months from now a day from now two years from now, whatever. That's fine
These strategies apply no matter what and I am going to go through them. Sorry. I'm adjusting for you all
I am going to go through them
And let you know which ones I think are the strongest what I think you should spend the most time doing
and then those that
I mean you can do them, but they're not as great as some people think they are. So
let's talk strategy number one and that is
Job searching online. So this is applying for jobs through job boards online
Um be that indeed.com
linked in
um for my entertainment people entertainment careers.net or through that company page and if you are going through those
Let me uh, if you've been doing it that way give this a little thumbs up like yep
That's what i've been doing. Um, not like I mean i'd love for you to give this a thumbs up on the likes below
But also in the chat
Give me the little thumbs up emoji or just type. Yep. I've been doing that
So if you are going on job boards and looking for jobs
That's fine. But very few people actually get a job that way
Um
It is extremely hard to just apply online
so people think they feel productive right you've made a spreadsheet and
You think i'm gonna apply to 10 jobs today and you hit apply apply apply on these 10 jobs
And you put them on your spreadsheet like yep. I applied for those and these were the days I did that
You're probably not gonna get a response
So couple of tips on applying for jobs online knowing nobody in the company and madeline you're welcome
So a couple of tips for applying for jobs online
Through straight up job applications on company websites indeed linkedin
number one
Do not just hit easy apply if there is any sort of easy apply option
Be that linkedin or indeed or the company saying oh just upload your linkedin profile and that'll do it
That's not gonna work. You can't do it that way because
all jobs
Are going through or all applications, excuse me are going through what's called an applicant tracking system the ats system
And it is scanning your application
For words that match the job description. So if you just hit easy apply
Chances are very few of your words are going to match that job description
So when you are applying for jobs online, you have to take the time
to redo your resume
specifically for that job
and
Word match it to the job description. So the example I always give is that I work in higher education
And we love to call event planning
Programming like when we're putting on an event we're putting on a we're programming something
Well programming to everybody else means, you know, like computer programming and they mean event planning
Uh, or they what i'm thinking of they think of as event planning
So if I am looking to switch careers and I see a job where it says must have event planning experience
And my resume talks about how I programmed
um
10 different dinners in a year for students. It's not going to match but if I change that to
event planning
including
Weekly dinners monthly outings. What about now the words event planning match and i'm going to be a stronger match in the system
so
When you apply online
You have to make sure you take the time to word match the job description
uh
The other way I want you to think about this is that
the last stat I heard and you know, you can find different stats everywhere, but
70 of jobs are found through the hidden job market
That means they were never even put online. That means they were found through someone
They know now that's kind of an old school stat because now
What's even crazier is most companies have an hr policy that you have to put
The job online to say it was open to all
We we made this position open to everybody
But they already know they're going to hire
The girl next door. They already know they're going to promote that assistant down the hall
Or they already know that jim's nephew needs a new job. And so he's going to get that assistant position
But they don't put that in the job description you see online. So a lot of those jobs you guys are applying for
You didn't even have a shot
But you sat at home and wasted time applying
the way I like to think about this is
If 70 of jobs are found through what's called the hidden job market meaning they're found through people, you know
Then sorry, I just realized you can see my like notes sitting back here. Okay
if 70 of jobs are found through the hidden job market meaning
Through other people they were found through someone else. That means
70 percent of your job searching should be spent
Connecting and meeting with people and only 30 percent should be spent online
So let's do easy math if you are spending 10 hours a week job searching
Seven hours should be about people
Three hours should be on indeed
Applying on linkedin applying on entertainment careers.net
Applying on that company website page
Okay, so keep that in mind
So that's way number one is just jobs or strategy one is apply online, but word match everything great
but not the best use of our time, so
We're gonna start talking about the things you need to be doing and these are the people things the next three strategy
Are more people related?
Um, but before I get into it, please give this video a thumbs up if you enjoy these lives
Even though we ended up on a new stream. Sorry you guys youtube live hates me. I'm gonna get this figured out
Um, and let me know in the comments
What has been your best job search strategy so far?
Or not best what strategy have you been using so far? So siara said she was applying through indeed
Um, you know, let me know. Have you just been doing company websites? Have we been getting coffees? What are you doing? Let me know
Okay
So let's move on to strategy number oh, I almost said three
We got to do two first, right? So
strategy number two
You need to tell everyone, you know that you are looking and what you are looking
for
now
Some people do this by just going on facebook and being like hey guys
Just graduated and I you know, love a job in the la area. Let me know if you hear of anything
Okay, but like what kind of job what industry I don't know you that well, so
I'm, not opposed to you putting it out there on facebook to your friends
I am talking more of writing friends writing family members emails
Or text or just the next time you see them at a family event or at somebody's birthday party
Let people know you are looking for a job, especially if you already have a job
People think you're happy. That's kind of the one myth. I think is funny is we know most people
I mean like this the stats show a lot of people are not fully satisfied in their job yet when we meet people
We assume well they've been doing that thing
So they like so they must like doing it not always true. So
Even if you have a job you need to let people know you're looking now
You don't need to let co-workers know you're looking if it's not that kind of work environment
But let your friends and family know you are looking for jobs
let their nice like their loose ties, so
but those people know too so a loose tie is you go to your friend's birthday and
Her cousin's there and you only see her cousin at her birthday every year
That's a loose tie when you have that small talk conversation with the cousin
Talk to the cousin and let him know. Oh, yeah, I'm at this company, but i'm looking to apply
For more positions in a different area
Now the other thing I said at the beginning was you have to let people know what you want
So I made this mistake y'all I was scared of saying
When I still worked in entertainment, I was scared of saying
Oh, I want a job in this area of the industry
because what if they didn't know someone in that area and I would totally still take a job in these other areas because I just
want out and I want to be over like
I got scared and so I just say oh, yeah, i'm looking for something new. I'm, not really sure what
Well, then people don't know how to help you, right?
So you need to let people know what you're looking for. So if you've just graduated
Maybe it's hey just graduated with my marketing degree. I'm looking for that first job in the field
so my main industries that i'm really interested in are uh fashion and the
restaurant industry
So if you hear of any marketing positions that come up in those areas even assistant coordinator level, obviously
Let me know
Here's the funny thing is once you do that that can trigger people's memories and go. Oh my gosh
I do know somebody who does that you should talk to my friend so-and-so who works for
Like union square dining right like a whole restaurant group. Um
But if you never said oh i'm looking at food
Or i'm looking at restaurants
They wouldn't they wouldn't think of their friend
so you've got to let people know what it is you're looking for so that they can start making connections and
Also, interestingly once you do that
You also might have someone come back and go
Oh, well, I don't know anyone in food
But I do have a friend who works at a magazine
And she's looking for a marketing assistant. Would you would you still be interested in that?
Like they just need a direction to go and then they can veer off if they want
But if you just say i'm open to anything
No one's taking you up on it
so
Let people know
What you are interested in and where you want to work what industries?
Um that is going to help them help you so make sure you're having those conversations
Now the third way is we need to be building our brand presence on linkedin
Okay, and i'm reading madeline said she's been using linkedin direct messaging
Um to reach out to professional contacts. That's awesome. So
LinkedIn is a gold mine for building your professional brand and getting contacts to then
um
get
Get job leads, right?
So it's the best job searching tool now
If you do not have a linkedin profile yet
or you made one freshman year of college and you're like
I haven't touched it since or you made one when you needed an internship and you haven't touched it
We need to go fix that so in the description for this, uh live
There is a link to my linkedin profile playlist and I walk you through all the different pieces you need for a great linkedin profile
So check that out when we're done
Um, but here's why you need to be on linkedin number one. You can start building your professional brand. So
Interestingly, we live in a world where if somebody publishes something on the internet
Everybody thinks they're an expert. Okay
It it's a double-edged sword. Sometimes that sucks because I hear people saying things that just are not right about career advice
Uh and in other ways that is awesome because you can become a thought leader very quickly
so
You want to get on linkedin and start being part of the conversation?
like people's uh posts share their posts comment on their posts and then
Share your own thoughts now. We don't need to be controversial
We don't need to try and like spice things up or zig when everyone zags and say hey i'm doing this crazy thing
i'm going against the grain and saying this different thing, but
if
You want to go into marketing?
Talk about some sort of marketing thing that's gone on lately and what you think about it
So for example taco bell created a whole
Oh, I can't talk a whole
Taco bell hotel to reward their biggest fans. This is experiential marketing at its finest
You could write something on three things you learned from the taco bell hotel campaign
And it'll get shared with other people, right?
So if you start doing that once or twice a week, you will start building your brand on linkedin
and then
people may start coming to
you
With job opportunities. I know plenty of college students mid-20 somethings who have gotten jobs
Off people seeing their stuff on linkedin and saying hey based on what you're writing
I think you would be good for this position. Do you have any interest? So make sure on linkedin that you are open to recruiters
There's a little toggle you have to do under the careers page
But it will get you seen and don't think because you don't see recruiters posting. They're not on there
I call them the hidden ninjas of linkedin
Recruiters are on linkedin all the live long day. They just don't post
They watch okay. So just know they are watching i'm going to take a sip of iced coffee
Leave me some questions if you have any also guys, let me know because I can see we've got people with us
Where are you coming from?
Leave your city and state or area if that's too personal y'all why did no one tell me?
I have this random hair what's happening?
Okay, sorry also hearing people drink on tv is just gross so I apologize um
Okay
So other things with linkedin that you can do you can reach out to people
I love madeline said she direct messaged some people now. I want you to warm up to that
I think madeline is a smart girl from what I know
uh, and I highly doubt her first message was a direct message, but
Get in touch with people at companies that you're interested in and connect with them say hey
I love what your company is doing in this area
I'm a marketing student. I'm just going to keep going with the marketing example. I would love to connect connect with them
Like some of their things that they post comment on them and then send a message and tell them that you're interested
in
um
Tell them that you're what you're interested in
Or that you hope when a new position comes around that you uh could chat more about that with them things like that
so
You can ask people you've known in the past for referrals, but not
People you just met like a woman connected with me today on linkedin
I accepted the connection and as soon as I did it, she tried to sell me her online course
I don't need her online course. She didn't do her research. I already have my own online course
So it was just a weird thing to do, you know, I always equate it to
You walked up to somebody at a party said hi and then said you want to go on a date?
like
No, I don't know you. Where are you from? Like tell me a little bit of something first. So
Make sure you don't reach out immediately in direct message unless you know them already or someone told you to
But start using linkedin as a job search tool
Um by using it to build your own professional reputation
And start reaching out and building connections remember because we get jobs through people
So build those connections so that people will want to refer you when the position becomes available
Then and hi to frank
Um and kevin watching from indiana. Thank you for saying all coffee is acceptable. I only drink iced coffee
Think we all need to know that always iced at all times. Uh
so
Fourth thing and this is the big one
You have to meet people in person. So my absolute favorite job search strategy works twofold
You have to do what's called informational interviews
Now some people have tried to be clever with this now and call them curiosity conversations and things like that
They're called informational interviews
It's essentially what people mean when they say get coffee get coffee
You got to get coffee when I was in college people would tell me all the time like oh you got to meet people
You got to get coffee with them
But what do I say like what do we do?
At coffee so an informational interview is what you do and that is essentially reaching out to somebody
and saying hey
I saw you work at xyz company or hey, I saw you do whatever job title
That is something that really interests me
I would love to ask you a couple of questions if that's okay
Now i've got hiccups great guys. I would love to ask you a couple of questions if that's okay
Um, you know by any chance could we go to coffee?
Just ask you a couple questions or I always say
Even 10 minutes on the phone would be great. Do not be afraid to pick this up and talk to somebody on it
All right, it's not that scary
Um, but I like the out of 10 minutes on the phone because not everyone wants to meet in person, right?
But most people go. Yeah, I got 10 minutes for you
This works best if you have somebody in common, so if it's
Your brother's your older brother's best friend who works at your dream company
Let your brother introduce the two of you or let him give them a heads up so that then you can reach out
If it's somebody that we've just met on linkedin and linkedin only that's where we're gonna warm up the relationship first
The other great thing to do is go to networking events go to linkedin locals in your city
I love a linkedin local go to linkedin locals in your city or creative mornings or just go on facebook or meetup.com
And see what kind of meetups there are
meet people at those
And then they get to see hey
He or she is not crazy. This seems like a nice person and say hey
I would love to talk further about what you do. We should get coffee sometime
They'll say yes give you their card. You'll exchange information
and then
You can go
Meet with them and they're much more likely to say yes, because they've met you in person already
so this strategy is amazing because
While you were not going
And interviewing for a job or even asking for a job
We do not ask for a job at this you are first going to do true job searching and figure out
Is this a job you even actually want to do because you're going to have a real person telling you?
Yep, it's a good job
Or is it a job?
That or is it a company that you hear more about the company and go?
But I thought that company stood for this this and that why is this employee being traded this way?
Maybe I don't want to work there, right?
It's going to help you figure out
Do I want to pursue this path or do I not do I want to pursue this company or should I look at other companies?
Um, that's where it's great. Number one number two
We are now building a network in those companies. We really want
so
When that application comes up when that job description comes up on linkedin again, and it's for a marketing assistant
Now you're not just going to apply online and pray to god that
Your name gets chosen through the applicant tracking system
You are going to reach out to that contact you had coffee with
and say
Thank you so much for meeting, you know, um
Your advice really helped and really reinstated why I want to work here
In fact, I just saw this opening for a marketing assistant. I'm going to apply but um
Wanted to let you know
in case
You know, you could send my resume along as well
Or just say just wanted to let you know
Um, thanks again for meeting and then they'll say oh my gosh, send me your resume. I'll pass it on to hr as well
Okay, it happens
Also, I cannot tell you how many times
The timing aligns and you will go to coffee with someone and you will hit it off and they'll say well, you know
We don't have anything available right now
But send me your resume i'll keep you in mind when something comes up
And you guys leave and they go back to their office and they call or email you an hour later and go
um, you won't believe this but
Our marketing assistant just quit
Send me your resume asap
This is also a good reason why you should always have your resume ready to go
So these are things you need to be thinking about. Okay
I would love for you to give me you don't have to tell me the name of the person
but
Can you think of someone?
You maybe should go get coffee with if so, just put yes
In the comments in that chat say yes, so to help you with this remember
This does not need to be the vp of the company that person's intimidating
Maybe you have a friend's cousin who interns at the company you want to work with
Maybe there's somebody who graduated a year before you
Who now works in a department that you think is interesting?
um, maybe there's just an event, you know of that you could go to
Anything like that counts. I go all the way to if you want to work in movies
And you have a friend
Who and I know one of you lives in indiana
You are in indiana. You want to work in movies. You have a friend who works at the local movie theater
Y'all that friend counts
Go talk to that friend because that friend might know a little bit more about how distribution works and who they work with
At the movie studio to get distribution rights and then you can ask them what what they know about that area and then go talk
To the person who does the distribution part, right?
Like it's following that breadcrumb trail same with if you want to work for a beauty brand and you have a friend who works
at sephora or at the macy's
uh
Urban decay counter or mac counter or whatever talk to that friend
They count because they talk to people from corporate so they can be your gateway to the next person
So we're just constantly following that breadcrumb trail to figure out where our next job is coming from
Now, I know that first step we talked about sounds really direct really easy. I'm gonna find somebody that way
But we've already talked about you're really not like you're not gonna find a job that way
these last three right talking to friends and family going on linkedin and building your profile and building an
An ongoing brand by commenting and posting
In the feed and then having coffees with people. I know these three sound way
Murkier right because they're not a direct path that applying online. It's a direct path
I wanted a job at e-entertainment a job was available. I applied I get it
These are murky it's like I don't know i'm having a coffee with someone who doesn't even have a job open
What how am I going to get a job?
all these last three are is
creating
opportunities the more
Opportunities that are out there the faster you're going to get the job
So you want to be creating as many opportunities as possible?
so
With that
I would love for you in the in fact, we're going to set goals
For those of you who are here live and if you're watching this later just comment
How many coffees are you going to have in the next month write a goal?
I don't care if it's one you might be super busy and you're like cassandra
I will be lucky if I can ask one person a coffee this month. That's fine
But let me know is it one is it one a day for a month? I've seen people do that
I I i'm an extrovert and even I think that's hard
But let me know in the comments or in the chat
You know how many people?
What's your goal?
Put a goal in that chat and i'm gonna read your comments
Hi from the bay the bay area
Yep
Hi frank from baylor. Ooh
Hook them horns. That's not baylor. Uh, let's see. Kevin's in indiana
Madeline I think you said you're in seattle area
And yes check for in fact, wait madeline. Is it you who's in seattle area? I think so. Um
I know people at linkedin local seattle
You got to get up there because people from the tech companies are all over that one. It's it's great. Um
John marty who also does videos
Uh about career on youtube you guys
Like we all know each other. It's kind of crazy. Um
He
Works for amazon and talks about this stuff, too
So you should go go check out john's videos to tell them I said
to go watch
um
Madeline said yes, she has four people. She could ask to have a coffee at four different companies. That's awesome
Okay, frank, so frank asked about getting a drink
Oh, I have been meaning to make a video just about this frank now
He asked about like hey, you know, you can't really hold your alcohol. You you shouldn't get a drink
You can always go
to a happy hour
I'm trying to think of where to start this number one
Once we pass the age of 21 getting drinks with people is very common for certain industries
I mean in entertainment, that's what everybody does is you only have drinks. This is coffee
So
If you're a person who does not drink for whatever reason past issues religious reasons
You just don't like the taste of alcohol. I think you can do one of two things you could say
Oh, you know, it's really hard for me
At that time of day to get together. Could we meet for lunch or coffee, right? You can try for a different time
Um, and you could always say but if that doesn't work for you
If that doesn't work for you, you can say
um
Sorry, I got distracted by chat so you can say
Yes, uh, i'd love to meet up but you know
My schedule it's a little hard in the evenings. Could we meet for coffee, you know?
Earlier in the day, but if that doesn't work i'll figure it out. So you're still leaving it open
Because if they come back and say no, sorry after work is the only time that works the other thing you can do
is go
And just don't order a drink there is nothing wrong with saying
Oh, i'm just gonna get you know
A soda with a splash of lime or whatever or a diet coke you guys
I used to go with co-workers all the time and just order diet cokes. So
Don't worry. Um
So that's one thing and if somebody has a problem with that
I think that's a test of
What their culture is and if you want to work there most people now are pretty understanding of like
Not everybody wants to drink. I think it's more of you have to let them still drink
but if you don't want to don't drink, you know, just say oh i'm just gonna get a diet coke or
um, do you like how I always say diet coke you guys can get a real coke if you want I just like diet so
that's
That's what I would say. You don't have to get into all all of it and say
Oh, you know, I really struggled it with it in the past and yada like nope
We're just meeting somebody they don't need that but just say oh i'm not a big drinker. Um, i'm fine with just a soda or
a
Ginger beer with a splash lime. You do know ginger beer has no alcohol just to play it
Um, you know ginger beer and lime whatever that's fine
so
Because because that is a thing in networking be be smart about that one
Uh, i'm frankie said he always tries to use a person within the company, uh to gain a reference
Yes
You do that's that's great. Um, that's what you should be doing
Uh, and then waleed says what exactly do I need?
To do when I get my first job like taxes and legal documents I need
Interesting you ask waleed. I am thinking of putting together an online course. That would be
$17 like not a lot under 20 bucks
That says that's all about having your best first week ever and I will go over those sorts of things
Is that something you all would want? Um, so it would talk about
What kind of documents you need to bring how you're going to fill out that hr paperwork and benefit?
What you need to do to make a great first impression. I have a secret tip
That's going to make you like the favorite person in the office
Um and leave a great first impression if that's something you would be interested in
Please let me know in chat or in the comments if you're watching this later
I'd really appreciate that because i'm in the midst of putting that together, but I want to know your thoughts on it, too
Okay
Seeing what else?
Nice madeline's setting good goals. I like it
uh, so what other questions do you guys have I have about
30 minutes if we have questions
Um, or we'll just end early. So let me know in the chat what questions you might have
Anything?
I think there was one up here that I missed
Maybe not. Nope. I answered that one
Thank you all for
Holding strong on switching the live stream feed. I
Scheduled ahead and it didn't work. So every time I schedule ahead it ends up not working. So
I'm, probably just gonna do it live
Like live live not plan anything ahead from now on. Um, okay. Zahara said what if you don't know anyone in the industry?
Zahara, that's what linkedin is for
Uh, so use linkedin to your advantage go on there and start connecting with people in the industry that you're interested in
So that you start to build relationships there
See if there are any meetups you can go to any networking groups for the industry that you're interested in
Um so that you can start meeting people
but no to this is a process like
Getting a job is not going to happen next week
This is a process. That's why the more people you meet the more on top of that you are right now
The faster that job is going to come because you've created more and more opportunities
So
Any other questions? I hope that helped
Any tips on the showcase yourself in those phone calls coffee chats with the new contact? Um, great question madeline
I will be honest that the phone ones are harder. I always love in person for this reason
I think the key thing is while this is not a job interview
You need to be thinking ahead of time. What are the key points you want them to know about you?
And practice these out loud
So i'm guessing a lot of you have seen my video on tell me about yourself
And how if we don't practice that people stumble over it
It's the same thing when you're going to have coffee with someone or you're talking on the phone at some point
As long as they're a decent human being they should say well tell me more about you
So like what's going what what do I need to know about you?
So think ahead of time
What do you want them?
to
To know about you. Do you want them to know?
That you are switching industries. Do you want them to know?
Like in your case
Maybe it's that you want them to know you're really interested in working in tech and why and there's like a background story
You can tell
Maybe it's dropping. Oh, yeah
Well, you know i'm exploring different careers that i'm interested in right now
Um, because my next step is I need an internship my senior year. And so that's kind of the next big thing for me
is
Uh finding an internship
You didn't ask them for an internship, but now they know where you're at
So now when an internship comes up they think of you
So keep that in mind of think ahead of time. What are the key things you want someone to know about you?
What is your goal of that event?
or that meeting or that phone call and maybe it's just that you want them to know like
I'm an accomplished responsible human being so it might be little things. It might not always be
something strong like
Hey, I have an internship next it might just be
Oh, yeah
You know, I did hear that for this position
Um, or if I want to get into this field I need to have advanced photoshop skills
So i've been taking a linkedin learning class to get a certificate and that is that something you've heard is important
So you're validating if it's important and you let them know you're working on it
Little things like that are the things you want to be thinking about
So frank asked if I would look at his linkedin profile
I do that. Um, if you want more information
You can uh email me
And I can send you the link to my calendly it is for a fee
i'm giving you free info right now guys, but there are certain things I do charge for and so
reviewing people's resumes
and auditing linkedin profiles
There is a fee but I would be happy to do it and I try to keep those prices really reasonable
Because I understand
We're looking for a job
You shouldn't have to pay insane amounts of money for that
Okay, if they're mlive asked if there's a linkedin local in boise, how would you find out
probably hashtag
linkedin local boise
hashtag linkedin local
id
Um something like that
Literally just use the search bar and see if it comes up that should tell you
I also don't think it's bad for you to just go on and post one day and say hey
I just found out about linkedin locals. Do we have one in the boise area and see what people say?
Let's see. What are my tips on applying for jobs when you keep getting turned down after applying for several months?
Okay
so
I have a video about that
Um, so i'd recommend finding the video on if you're doing interviews, I would also say
uh
I don't even want to attempt your name and butcher it. I'm very big on getting names correctly and i'm afraid i'll mess yours up
but
uh, my friend who's asking about
Tips for applying when you keep getting turned down
I don't know if you were at the beginning of this
Uh live stream, but if you are only applying online, you probably are getting turned down
You need to be meeting with people
Okay, this is why you're supposed to be
Looking like networking even when you're satisfied in your job because one day you won't be and you're going to need people
so
if you are
Applying and getting turned down
Two things I i'm going to question if you're meeting with enough people or if you're only applying online and then number two
I'm curious what your resume looks like
I see a lot of really bad resumes out there
and so
I'm wondering if your resume is correctly formatted
Having the right skills, etc
So that is something else that you might want to have somebody look at be it me or a friend or whoever
Oh, i'm gonna drop the laptop y'all. It's sitting precariously on a stack of books. Um, so
Those would be two big things if we are applying for jobs and meeting with people and doing all those things and yet not
Getting called in for interviews
I would get
I would get your resume checked. I think it's worth the investment to get your resume looked at
Um, what if you're interested in a certain business role, but not necessarily an industry or company great question
That's fine
You don't have to have a specific industry but let people know the type of role or even the type of department
You are interested in it's when we sit there with people and go
Oh, I would love I just I just need a full-time job
I would just love to be an assistant somewhere or I just need out of my current role. I just want to go somewhere else
Or even something super broad if you just say an industry and not a role like I say
Well, I really want to just stay in television
Um, but i'm not quite sure what
Well, no one can help me
But if you say oh, well, I really want to work in marketing or you know, i'm very interested in pr
Um, I don't know what field i'm just excited to kind of explore that and do something in a pr department or a finance department
Hr, etc
Perfectly fine place to start
But good question. Uh
Kevin
Thank you. Thanks for watching
Any other questions y'all?
anything else
And if you haven't yet, please give this video a thumbs up if you like live streams. I want to do more
Thank you for your patience as I keep figuring them out because
It's a little frustrating for you and for me
um
Let's see. Is there anything else that you need to know?
make sure you uh, check those videos in the description box for this once it's uh,
Gets rendered and goes up for everybody
Uh that will have a link to the networking profile or the
Like how to network playlist where I go into all these coffee chats a lot more detail
Y'all also some of those videos are from when I first started and one of them is edited horribly
And I think you literally see me turn on the camera and go
Hi, like, hmm. I'm, sorry. That's real bad. But the information is good. I promise you the information is good
um
So just keep that in mind and then if you have not started on linkedin I talk about linkedin
Every wednesday and even the videos that are for business are great for job seekers as well
But start with that profile playlist that's in this description box
Okay
What do I think about going in person to companies with resumes and business cards? Oh
People ask this all the time and I used to ask this back in the day
I think in our culture
Where we think a friend calling us on the phone without warning is intrusive
Showing up at someone's place of business
Is considered very intrusive. So while I totally understand on your side because this was my mindset
that it's like I want to show i'm eager and then they'll meet me and see that I am a
a normal qualified individual
It doesn't play out that way to them
It's who's this person who thought they could just come into our company, right? Like we're all so scared
I think we live in a world now where safety is really a big concern, right?
And so having some strangers show up no matter what just feels really invasive
And so while it seems like it's going to portray
eagerness and enthusiasm
It comes off
a little bit
Nerve-wracking. I don't want to use the word scary but just kind of a what's going on. Why is this person here kind of feeling?
Um, but I get that question a lot. So thank you for asking it because yes, it is something that
we need to
We all need to think more about how our message is being received on the other end
And I think sometimes we need to put ourselves
in those shoes and go if somebody came into my work and just said hey on my resume, I wanted to
See if you have any positions available
like
Huh, what I was doing other things, right?
So just kind of try and and think about that in the future
Flip the script and see how you would feel to decide if it's a good idea or not
Are there any other questions? This is going to be last call
And if for some reason this is your first time here, thank you for watching and putting up with
live stream issues
