PLEASE NOTE: WE RETURNED HOME DUE TO CORONA VIRUS AND ARE CURRENTLY IN 14-DAY QUARANTINE.
We have started our thru-hike from Amicalola falls to Springer Mountain camp ground. We began in glorious sunshine, however after a few hours in, the weather turned and it made for a very eery, mystical hike up the mountain into camp. This completed our first day of our thru hike! 9 miles!
We’re Scott & Lauren, a couple from Melbourne in Australia!
Our passion for travelling, backpacking and hiking started back in July of 2017 when we headed off to Europe for a 6-month backpacking trip, which would ultimately change our lives. After returning in January 2018, the "standard" post-travel emotions hit.
We both decided we would knuckle down and try and save as much money as possible before jetting off again to see more of this beautiful world.
First stop... Atlanta in Georgia, USA - Here is where we will be attempting an Appalachian Trail thru-hike beginning in March 2020! #Hiking
The archway has made it to the approach trail.
How are you feeling Scott? Pretty nervous with all that's going on.
Well we sent a wall charger to be picked up from there because they said it was
okay but they can't find the parcel right now.
So they sent us to the lodge but the lodge is a bit off the trail so
we're going to do more miles today than we expected.
And we're not sure if they have our package or not.
Well it sure is beautiful here.
Big boys better watch out for them.
All right we've officially started the stairs.
I think we've only walked a k, k and a half maybe.
And we're sweating. It's 16, 17 degrees out here. It's beautiful.
But our packs are a little too heavy so we are feeling it at the moment.
All that food that we bought. Probably a little too much but
with everything going on at the moment we thought it'd be good to be getting
actually a day and a half, two days of food just in case. The very quiet
meal gap's not what we expected.
Either way we're enjoying ourselves.
Who's that sexy minsk in front of me?
We found a fellow hiker called Lauren the Red Rosie.
You've got some red rosy cheeks young lady. That was pretty good accent but
that's bad. Nice man. So I wish I could give Lauren a trail name because Red
Rosie would be an absolute pearler. Rosie Red.
Do you like that name? If you're not too sure.
Do not go this way. This is the wrong way but we've got to go
to the lodge to see if our charge is there. Hoping for the best
but expecting the worst. Is that a sign? Yes.
He's on fire. How are the hiking poles going Rosie Red?
My cheeks actually still red. Yeah they're pretty red.
We're beginners when it comes to trekking poles.
Actually we're beginners when it comes to long distance hiking as well.
I haven't used mine yet but
I think Lauren's doing hers right.
That's good. We'll see how it goes anyway. Feels good
Please charge be there.
So we went to the lodge. We were greeted by some beautiful people and guess what?
We have our charger. Our charger is there.
And then we might have got a new follower. She asked for our YouTube
channel and our Instagram page and of course
we gave her the links. So hopefully another subscriber.
Didn't catch on what was her name? I didn't know but she was amazing. She's a very nice
So if she does watch this thank you for keeping
our chargers safe and thank you for the new sun.
Now we'll continue back to the approach trail with many more hours of hiking to go.
Rosie Red having fun still? Sure am.
Another thing that we can be happy about is that it's not raining.
It's very cloudy now. The sun was out before but
back to cloud but the temperatures are very cool and great to hike in.
It's not hot. It's not freezing. It's not humid so it's good.
Oh there's some mud. Mud's always good though. Mud's fun.
Ever since we left the stairs we haven't come across
any other hikers. We think it might be like this
all the way to Springer. Why have we stopped Lauren?
I mean Red Rosie. Oh Rosie Red. I'm gonna put some tape on my foot.
What's wrong with your foot? Previous blister is starting to hurt.
What's gonna fix it? Leuco tape. Leuco tape.
How's the leuco tape on your ankle or heel?
It's good she says. It's good. Welcome to the new trail of mud.
The higher up the mountain we get the muddier it's gonna get.
Love it. Tell you what. I am having the time of my life at the moment. Even
though we've only done three or four miles I
feel free. I feel like this is the place that Lauren and I meant to be at the moment
and we're excited. Nervous but excited.
Also I should learn to speak more clearly with my voice as I'm a chronic
mumbler and I'm very hard to understand so
from now on I'll speak more loudly and clearly
so you can actually hear me in the video. Isn't that right Red Rosie?
Thank you. Thank you. How are you feeling?
Hot? Even though it's probably in the 50s. She's too hot.
A bit of a change of scenery here. We're in like a little
green forest kind of thing. Oh it's beautiful. It was only a matter
of time but we finally got the rain jackets out. The rain
started coming down. We're only about halfway through to
Springer Mountain. We always knew this was going to happen
though so we're well prepared for it. Now it's just a mental game I suppose and
keep dry and hopefully this pack cover and this rain jacket is good enough for
this weather. We'll soon find out I suppose.
Lauren's got the new Osprey pack cover. Very pumped about it aren't you Lauren?
I am. Let's see how we go. Some beautiful conditions to be hiking
in. Conditions have changed here pretty
quickly. It's now pissing down. Temperatures have dropped. It's pretty
cold. I'm trying to stay warm but hiking
quickly to keep our temperature up. About to stop for lunch soon. Have a bit
of a feed. Getting hungry. It's two o'clock. We've just had our
lunchtime break. Had a quick feed. Tortilla wrap with peanut butter.
Delicious. Now trekking poles. Never used them in my life
so therefore no idea how to use them. Anyone give me some tips on how to
have them fitted? I'm not too sure.
Hip height. Shorter. Longer. I feel like I cruise a lot quicker
without them but we'll give them a crack. They'll help us.
As you can see it's very eerie and wet. Muddy here along the trail. We've got
about three miles until we hit Springer
which is exciting. It's a little cold. Lauren's tights aren't holding up very
well in the wet but we'll push on through and see how they
turn out when we get to Springer and we'll re-evaluate our options then.
I probably should wait for her actually. You see her? There she is.
Lauren! As you can see it's very misty
along the trail. You can only see probably
10 to 15 meters in front of us. It's quite a cool vibe actually.
I've never been in an environment like this before so
it's always a good experience. On another positive note we met a bloke
from Australia, Fletch. We met him a bit quicker than we
thought. He caught up to us as we were hiking pretty slow. Lauren was
taking it easy which is completely fine.
So we had a chat for him for a good half an hour and now he's scooted off and we
should meet him at Springer as well. He seems like a nice lad so
it's been a good day. Met some nice people. Legs are feeling good.
Pack's probably a little too heavy but we'll see how it goes. We can ditch and
stuff when we get to Neals Gap probably.
I really just can't believe we're here. I know we've only been planning for a
year and the majority of the people that do
thru-hikes plan their whole lives so we're very lucky in that aspect but
out here it's just magnificent. It's so eerie and foggy and mystical and
beautiful. My life. Lauren, you having the time of
your life?
Where are we? Nimbleville Gap. How long till Springer? No idea.
How are your legs? Good. Just come down from
the mountain and of course now we're heading straight back up.
What are you eating? Sour gummy bears. Mine? How are they? Sour. Can I have one?
Delicious. Thanks. And nutritious. A bit of burnt breast
vinaigrette to get us up over that mountain.
One more mountain. No, 1.5 more mountains. Ah, then we go head to Black Gap Shelter, yeah?
Is that where we're going? Yeah. Just down the mountain then? Yeah.
We can do it. I suppose everyone is wondering why Lauren
isn't speaking to the camera and the reason is
Lauren is very bad at walking and looking at the camera
and talking. She's a fantastic multitask person but
when it comes to walking through mud and
uphill and downhill and talking to a camera at the same time
nah, I don't have a cup of tea so. We'll have to wait till we get some dry
ground and some flat ground before Lauren comes on screen. I know everyone's
probably sick of me right now. Lauren's coming. She will be, she will be
here. Yeah it does. What's the problem Lauren?
What's the problem? I said I shouldn't have put glucose tape on it
because it pulled the skin off the blister.
So now it's more painful? Way more painful. And how long have you had that blister for?
Since December. It's a long lasting blister. Oh and that wet rock was really wet.
You had a sleep pad for a reason. Yeah I know.
Rubbish in my pocket. Got to see a cute dog though.
Shout out to Luna the dog. Hey Luna. I thought I was gonna scare you.
It's pretty muddy now isn't it? So muddy. Can you hear that?
You hear that sound? What is it? Freedom.
There is completely no sound out here. There is no wind. The rain has stopped.
We haven't seen another fellow hiker in a little while and it's just just
amazing.
This is what freedom is. Look we finally made it to our first white
blaze. The southern most southern terminus of
Maine. Is that right? A footpath those who seek
thy shoot with the wilderness. That's Lauren and I.
You've got to touch your first white blaze.
Very exciting.
All right now we are officially on the Appalachian Trail.
We've just summited Springham Mountain. How long did it take us? Probably
five hours or something like that. We were pretty slow. We were doing lots of
filming and photos but six hours.
And now it's only 450 meters or so to the
to the shelter where we'll be pitching our tent.
We also first saw our first white marker which is pretty exciting.
And now we're gonna make sure we don't miss any. Don't want to get lost.
We made it. Absolutely buggered. Back sore. I'm complaining already.
I'm not really. I'm having the time of my life. Happy as Larry as they say.
Time to eat some food. Starving. Are you starving? Starving.
Bloody hungry. Oh the old filtering water game.
How fun's that? How'd you go? I could have done better I think.
What if I took the soil off? I don't know.
But it's dripping into my hands so you should probably get me in the bottle.
Well we've finally made our tent up. Now we're just
organizing all our stuff. What was that? Bunch of
gonna cook some din din. Ramen and mashed potatoes and tuna.
Very successful first day. Nine miles. A bit sore but a bit more than we
expected. See how we wake up tomorrow. See how many
I'm expecting sore shoulders and sore legs.
It was fun. Real fun. Guess what time it is?
Snickers time. The Snickers count begins now.
This is number one on day one. We're gonna knock back at least 250 of these
bad boys over the next 170 days. Don't you worry.
Yummy.
Massachusetts. Gee I pronounced that pretty well didn't I?
I look like a criminal with this panty on.
It's over there. Oh yeah.
