A Narrative in Silver

My name's Miriam Hannid. I'm a silversmith and I work in Suffolk on the east coast of the UK.
My work is inspired by many natural elements, particularly the movement of water and the way
light captures its different forms. I trained at Farnham and graduated with a degree in metalwork
and jewellery in 2007 and this was followed by a year at Bishop's Land, a charitable organisation
where 10 jewellers and silversmiths are selected annually to practice and hone their skills.
So it was there at Bishop's Land that I discovered and began to develop the techniques of chasing
and repoussé and hand engraving and these now shape my signature style of sculptural silver
and continue to influence all my works. There is an interplay in the creation and final realisation
of each of my designs. Composition, overall function and form unite with the chasing
and engraving process to dynamically shape each piece. I enjoy this synergistic approach rather
than simply making then decorating an object. I harmoniously integrate subtleties such as
the light interacting with silver's varying textures and seek to innovate by using new
tools and techniques to explore fresh ways of mark making. My life in general is enriched by
over 15 years of practicing heartfulness meditation and I feel certain that some of my
most exciting works in silver have been drawn from the deep insight and positive inspiration
experienced in my daily meditation sessions. Heartfulness is a way of living and embraces a
reconnection with a deeper part of oneself amidst the realities of a busy life, encouraging one to
empty one's mind, transcend thoughts and enjoy a meditative state in which creative inspiration
can enter easily.
