We've got a big solar install to do but first we've got to clean the roof so let's see how to do that.
Before we start, safety first. The safest place to clean your roof is actually from a ladder
beside it. Now that's not convenient for us so I'm going to be up on the roof but you've got to be
really careful. I really try to avoid standing on the roof so I'm always sitting or kneeling or
crawling and that just makes it less likely that you're going to lose your balance. Also you should
take note of the type of roof that you have. Ours is a walkable rubber roof so this cleaning
technique is going to be for that roof specifically. If your roof is different you may have to use a
different technique. Also one more thing you might not have thought of. Make sure that your trailer
is chalked and the stabilizers are down. That'll just prevent it from kind of bouncing around too
much which is nice when you're up on the roof. So the first thing we're going to do, step one,
we're going to sweep off all the dust. So I've got a little soft brush here and a little broom.
Again, I'm not going to stand up. I'm just going to kind of kneel and crawl around for safety
and I'm going to start at the far end and then kind of just work my way all the way back.
So surprisingly the roof was actually pretty clean to begin with. The back part was the
dustiest. Next up, step two, is to give it a good rinse. So another safety tip, if it's a bright
sunny day you should wear some sunscreen. Mel just reminded me to put some on. All right now Mel is
going to give me the hose. Got the hose. Yeah please. Has it caught on something down there?
Can you check if it's kinked anywhere else? All right there's there's Mel's safety tip. I'm
supposed to yell if I'm going to fall. She'll be in the backyard. All right so now it's time for
step two. Rinse the roof. I'm going to rinse it from the far side down here.
This roof is not really that slippery when it's wet. It's rubber and it's got little grooves on
it so yeah still feels pretty safe to me. Anyways it's on to step three which is actually washing
the roof. So I'm going to go down and get a bucket with some soap. Now the type of soap is something
that is hotly debated but there are two things you should definitely not use. One is anything with
petroleum distillates. That'll wreck your rubber roof. Also anything with citrus or acidic. That's
going to wreck your roof too. So you want to use something that is very mild and no petroleum
distillates, no citrus. One thing that is commonly suggested is a very mild laundry detergent or
something like Dawn dish soap. So I've got some warm water with some very mild biodegradable
laundry soap mixed in and my scrubby pad so let's get to it. So I've given it a nice good scrub now.
Step three is of course to rinse it all off.
And there we have it a clean roof all ready for our solar install.
I guess I should bring the camera down.
It's on to step three which is actually, it's on to step three which is actually
be sure to stay low. Very mild biodegradable dish detergent.
Can you reach it any further or not? I'm only so tall.
