Roller Skating Disco Spin / Dips Don't Have To Be Hard, Here Are My Tips

How to Roller Skate

So we're going to do three pivot tricks. So first of all we're going to do a toe stop spin pivot
and then a backwards pivot and finally we're going to do a heel pivot. Let's go do it!
So the first skill I'm going to show you is a pivot spin. So for this one you need to have
good balance and know where your inside edges are. So for this one you can use whichever toe
stop feels the most comfortable. So you're going to put one toe stop down and all the weight's
going to be on here and this foot is going to do an inside edge around this one. To start off with
you can do it as a little pump and you've got to turn this. A little pump and a turn. To get the
quick pivot on this one you need to take the front truck off the ground so you're a little bit higher
on the toe stop. So then when you pump this will spin. So eventually what you can do is use this
one to push this leg around like this. I've got my weight on here I'm going to pull this side around
here so I'm going to bend here and like a spin you're going to bend and pull this leg around
so pull your thighs like that. So when you're skating forwards you can use it as a little move
so you can use this forward momentum pop your toe stop in. So a nice one with this was at the end I
actually push myself off with the toe stop that I've been spinning around. Sounds confusing it's
easier if I show you. So I'm going round and now I'm going to put more weight on this foot so I'm
going to skate off on this one and I'm going to push myself away. So the backwards pivot I'm going
to show you two versions of this one one without toe stops and one with because they are a slightly
different skill. So for the one without toe stops you need to have a really solid backwards skate
and you also need to know where your outside edges are. With this one think of it as rolling backwards
on a curve on two feet and then you're going to swap. So that's all you're going to do initially
and then as you get more comfortable with that you're going to put more weight on the inner foot
so I've now got more weight on here so this is kind of free and then more weight on here so this
is kind of free. So now you can start to put that leg that's not got any weight on it behind you.
This time I'm going to put this foot here, feet back together, change my weight onto here and put
the foot behind. The more comfortable you get with that the quicker you'll be able to put your foot
behind so you get this sort of action. So nice deep outside edge here and this foot's kind of
pulling me around. The other option for the backwards pivot is with a toe stop. So for this
one again you need a good backwards skate but you also need to be aware of the feeling of stopping
backwards with your toe stops but how you can apply the pressure gently and come to a very
gentle stop. So if I'm skating backwards you can stop but what I'm saying about doing is applying
the pressure gently so you come to a gradual stop. So I'm skating backwards and then I'm going to put
my toe stops in and I'm going to gradually stop. So with a toe stop it is the exact same principle
with the outside edge and you're going to put your foot behind you but this time obviously when you
put your foot behind you you've got a toe stop in the way so let's use that toe stop to come to a
stop. So let me show you what I mean. I put my foot behind and the toe stop goes in and I can do a
little pivot turn and stop and then I can skate off again. So I'm using my toe stop to gently
control the stop like I was showing you before. So I put it in and it's just in so it's still
slipping. My weight is mainly on this front foot only partially on this one so it can still glide.
Our last one is the heel pivot. For this one really good strong forward skate and also you
need to know where your inside edges are. Think of this as doing a tight circle around the other foot
so you're doing this. So this foot's spinning and this foot is almost pumping round in a circle
so you can actually do the pump. So this one's slipping and this one is pumping. What I'm going
to do is I'm going to roll into it that way I won't need to pump because I can take my forward
momentum into the round. Let me show you what I mean and then round. So what I'm going to do now
is lift the toes of the foot that I'm going round to help me anchor. So I'm lifting and now I'm
tightening this edge to go round. With this one it's hard to get in to the circle. It's all in
that inside edge has got to be really deep so put loads and loads of pressure on the inside of this
skate. That's the foot where all the weight is. This one is just kind of anchoring you and you're
pivoting on these back two wheels. So let me do it one more time to show you what I mean.
So I'm putting my foot in and then I'm really pushing on here and that's giving me the circle.
By the way this one you can do with and without toe stops. I hope you've had lots of fun with
these. I love these. These are some of my favourite moves. So have fun, keep yourself safe and I'll
see you next time. I'm Katie, you've been watching Skatie. Bye!
