hey everybody welcome back i'm adam and
i'm heidi
and we are the country collectors
[Music]
today we're going to take you outside of
the city center
to a different neighborhood called sochi
melco
if you enjoyed our previous videos make
sure you hit that
subscribe button on the bottom of your
screen right now and ring that bell
this is one of our favorite places in
oaxaca this is the beginning of sochi
milko
the oldest neighborhood in the city up
here we're heading towards the aqueduct
so this is the aqueduct that used to
bring water to the city
from san felipe up in the mountains they
started construction in 1727
and finished in 1750.
[Music]
the aqueduct you see behind me is one of
the most recognizable
aspects of this neighborhood
[Music]
this is one of our favorite corners in
all of oaxaca
as you can see there's just art
everywhere
[Music]
[Music]
so when most tourists come to oaxaca
they just stay
in the central part by the zocalo but we
definitely recommend
wandering a bit further off and coming
to sochi milko
it is such a cool neighborhood it's also
known as the
barrio de sochimilco yeah the oldest
neighborhood
of oaxaca it's known for their artisans
their textiles their weavings they also
have some great street art and
food in case you didn't know i like food
they have a lot of really good food here
too
yeah there's one really notable
restaurant it's called
ancestral it was so delicious one of our
favorite restaurants in the entire city
so we definitely recommend that
and one of the coolest parts about it is
it's actually part of that aqueduct we
just showed you
so when you're sitting in the restaurant
you're actually sitting in the aqua duck
it's so cool
and the food's really good too
[Music]
the really neat architecture around here
too there's another
very interesting house here in sochimoko
since we've been in mexico we've seen
so many toilets or like pieces to
toilets
it's so odd like this is just out on the
street
[Music]
me
[Music]
[Music]
look we're at a dam a dam
i think it's so cool that we are just
like walking where
the river normally flows like we're just
standing down here
it's one of those cloudy days and even
though i wore sunscreen i'm obviously
getting pretty red but i just want to
show you this we showed you the
aqueducts at the beginning of sochi
milko we walked about 10 minutes
and we found this we aren't sure the
history here where the water came from
if it came from the same place san
felipe or
if this was a river it's dried up as you
can see
so if you know the answers put it in our
comments and in case you didn't know
no pooping is it a dam or b
dam i don't know it's not a dam or b
dam
[Music]
dog
[Music]
and here you can see part of the
aqueduct again
you keep walking north you'll come to
casa azul de sochi milko
and if you make a left it'll take you
down this little alleyway that'll bring
you to
cafes and one of our favorite
restaurants
ancestral
[Music]
so
[Music]
look how cool this is they've even
converted the old aqueduct into a little
wine cellar
[Music]
nothing like a little live music at
lunch
it's our favorite time of the day time
to eat so in mexico they love their
flavored waters and everywhere you go
you can ask for the agua del dia
i love pamica and this is hibiscus
flower water
and i love maracuya or passion fruit
and that's what i got delicious
[Music]
and now my favorite what would life be
without some
chile might be a little spicy but that's
how i like it
oh yeah
[Music]
oh beet chips
it's so sweet they said mix it up look
at that cheese from the bottom yeah
[Music]
perfecto
[Music]
this is the agua chile
i didn't even know that existed
[Music]
that is like so
from ancestral if you walk down the
street here there's a few
more cafes so we're going to check out
this one called the am
sandberry cafe
sprayer sprayer
[Music]
that looks good it's like an almond
cookie
[Music]
oh yeah look at that view this is
amazing
we got another rooftop restaurant we're
in sachimilco
look at their gardens these nice raised
beds and the mountains
[Music]
and we have it all to ourselves what do
you think of sochi milko
oh me um well i think sochi milko is a
very cool place
it's it's different than the other part
of the city i feel like the other part
of the city is like boom boom boom boom
boom
it's got the it's got the musicians it's
got the people it's got the art on every
wall
here you have to look a little bit more
and i kind of like that too
this is such an incredible view up here
i don't know if you can
really grasp it and we're the only
people up here and
it's it's sad because i'm sure that
during a normal year
there would be so many people here we
wouldn't even be able to get a table
but because of the pandemic there just
aren't the tourists around and i know
businesses are struggling
and we're grateful to be here and to be
able to support them but
it is it's sad coming to sochi milko is
just a nice little escape
from the center of the city the streets
are smaller
there's less traffic it's just more
tranquil
quiet you can come up on a rooftop and
have
a midday cappuccino with nobody around
we're just listening to the birds
chirping
and the cats meowing and it's just so
nice
so if you ever are in oaxaca we
definitely recommend
going to the other neighborhoods
especially social
oh what is this my giant cappuccino
[Music]
amazing
an almond croissant i mean croissant
we got some chamomile tea what did you
get
i got a little chocolate cake and a
cappuccino
and just for the record it'd say
sorry cappuccino is huge
you got a little something on your nose
no the guy behind you have our coffee
and the cat roof
and a little wiener i mean wiener dog
so i was never really a sweets person
until i met adam
and we have had dessert after every meal
pretty much here
it's because i'm so sweet it has nothing
to do with dessert
look at that chocolate we've noticed
here that the chocolate is a lot
different than back home
it's almost a little more bitter it as
opposed to like the sauces we talked
about in the last video ketchup mayo
everything is sweeter their chocolate
and their cakes are less sweet
which is weird to me but it's still
delicious it's just not what we're used
to
look at that breakfast we got hot cakes
with eggs
we got some avocado toast
bagel with salmon and an angel
with a view
[Music]
when was the last time you were in the
city and there was just a fruit tree
growing out of somebody's yard like i
don't even know it looks like it's maybe
grapefruit or something i have no idea
this is the story of the baker
that's why we love these murals so much
they tell the story
so it starts over here it's the
you know the flower the of the wheat and
then it goes to the baker
and then it's the fire and the oven and
then he puts
the bread in the oven and this and then
out comes the bread and the birds are
saying and everyone's happy
and the water's running down from the
mountains and there's a crocodile
and it's just so pretty
and then we go right next door and it's
like a mystery
does this place sell sausage i don't
know but i'm hungry
[Music]
normally you wouldn't find me in an
alley with graffiti anyway but here
look it it's gorgeous
and safe here they actually use it as
their voice so if it's something you
know political is going up they want to
show you through
their work what they want to say so they
use art as their weapon
which i find super interesting and again
the colors are just
so amazing and it makes you think like
the stereotypical like when you're sad
everything is doomy and gloomy
and then you see all these colors and
you're like
god life is okay it's not so bad
so i love chocolate and
wait no i don't why am i lying to them
[Music]
