Put El Canon de Sumidero Chiapas Mexico at the top of your what to do in Chiapas Mexico list!
Canon del Sumidero or Sumidero Canyon is one of the best things to do in Chiapas. We took the best tour in San Cristobal de Las Casas to Canon del Sumidero for 400 pesos, around $20 USD. It included transport, the boat tour of Sumidero Canyon, Canon del Sumidero Miradors, and a short stop in the Pueblo Magico Chiapa De Corzo.
Chiapas Mexico is filled with so much natural beauty, and the Canon del Sumidero tops the list! When you travel Mexico you must visit Chiapas and Sumidero Canyon! It’s one of the best things to do in Chiapas!

Hola! Bienvenidos! Welcome to beautiful Canyon del Sumidero!
Buenos dias! Good morning Country Collectors! Today we are exploring the natural beauty
of Chiapas by taking a tour to Canyon del Sumidero! We've seen pictures and it looks insane!
We CANYON-NOT wait to take you there but first make sure to hit that subscribe button and ring
the bell 🔔 so you don't miss out on any of our future adventures!
The easiest way to explore Sumidero from San Cristobal is by organized tour.
We booked it through our hostel for 400 pesos, which is about 20 dollars.
It includes the transport, the boat ride through the canyon, as well as stops at the mirador.
And after we have a little bit of free time to explore the pueblo magico, Chiapa de Corzo!
Oooooooo!
And it looks like our transport is here! The drive from San Cristobal to Sumidero takes about an hour we will see you there!
We just arrived and holy CANYON-NOLI! You have to check this out!
As you can see our first stop is here at Los Miradores.
There are five lookouts along the canyon rim.
We're just going to be able to go to two of those today. This first one is Los Chiapa and it is absolutely stunning.
You can see the bend in the canyon here and it's about 90 degrees it's spectacular.
We just found out this canyon was formed 35 million years ago around the same time as the Grand Canyon, in the United States.
It's part of the larger Canyon del Sumidero national park, which is just one national park of the 67 that can be found here in Mexico.
The canyon is 13 kilometers long which is about eight miles and the walls reach heights up to a thousand meters.
Which is about 3,300 feet. WOW! I know.
And even though Chiapas is the poorest state in mexico, it is the richest in its natural resources
and this canyon just gives you a little glimpse into why that is true.
What do you think?
Honestly it reminds me a lot of Horseshoe Bend in Arizona. I know.
Both are so incredible. Exactly!
And look right down there. You can see the Lancha, the boat, that we're gonna take out later and this is gonna be us in a little while.
Yeah! So stay tuned for that.
And what a beautiful backdrop for reproduction 😏!
And it is time to go to mirador number two. Come with us!
Yoohoo! Let's go check this mirador out!
We are at Mirador La Coyota. Something you're going to notice when you come here is that because the
canyon walls are so high the sun can only hit the entire canyon when it's at its absolute peak at high noon.
So this is going to determine what sort of vegetation you're going to see everywhere
around which is not the same because it doesn't get the same amount of sunshine throughout the day.
Pretty cool stuff!
And look at that gorgeous emerald green water.
There is a boat right over here. I believe they stopped to look at the crocodiles. So I am very excited for that stop later.
Look at Adam! You know he's always... Living life on the edge people! Be careful will ya?
So if you are not joining an organized tour and driving yourself Los Miradors are open from
8 until 4 pm and they cost 50 pesos. You do get a wristband. If you're gonna take the boat tour
make sure to keep that wristband on because you are gonna need it.
And that is where we are heading right now to hop on that boat so come with us.
I can't wait for this next stop! (Heidi giggles)
Who's ready for a boat ride? I know I am!
We have just arrived to the embarkation point Osumacinta and there are a bunch of people around.
I know there's a few more places along the river where you can take a boat
but we're heading out from here which is right by the hydro electric dam.
Make sure to bring plenty of water. Go to the bathroom before because it's a two-hour tour and wear sunscreen.
Don't forget a hat two people! You do not want to burn that cabeza!
They're gonna hand out some chalecos, which are life vests and we're gonna head on the boat. So come with us.
Safely first!
And if you forgot to bring water, snacks, hats, whatever you need they have it here.
As you can see the boats do not have roofs on them so you definitely need some sun protection.
WooHoo! So excited. Yeah this is cool so far.
And right over there is a hydroelectric dam.
This dam is pretty impressive. It actually is responsible for over 33% of all hydroelectric power that is supplied into Mexico.
Check this out! They have snacks, micheladas.
Hola, hola! They have everything!
We got a michelada on the river here for 50 pesos. 2.50 USD. Ooooooo, delicous.
Hasta Luego! Gracias! Bye!
We haven't even mentioned the name of the river yet. This is called the Grijalva River.
Rio Grijalva. It's beautiful. You can see the emerald green color. We're loving it!
(cheering sounds from other boat)
Now that's a party boat! (Laughing).
And we've already spotted some wildlife. Look at all those cormorants.
There's so many.
Ooooo and the buzzards as well.
Adam keeps seeing logs like this and he's like it's a crocodile 🐊 .(Heidi Giggles) He's scaring me.
Better safe than sorry people. (Heidi Giggles) It's so true.
What a cool first stop! I guess it's the second stop after the dam. (Laughing)
Wow and this looks like vulture island.
There's one coming in!
And make sure to cover your drinks when you're at the bird island.
That was a close one people. (laughing)
We're about to enter the Canyon del Sumidero. It looks so beautiful. Check it out!
I'm just looking at this glass and thinking how great it would be to ski or wakeboard on this. Who's with me?
And I'm so glad we got to go up to the miradores as well as do this boat tour.
I think when you come here you definitely need to do both of them to really appreciate its magnificence.
And right over there you can see what they call the Christmas tree and it's formed from a cascade that comes down in the wet season.
Look at all those beautiful purple flowers right here. Oh look how green and lush this is.
I can only imagine what it's like in the wet season.
It looks like a fairy wonderland or something. I don't even know.
It really does!
It's magical. That's for sure.
And be prepared to get wet
Right up there you can see Los Chiapa, that first mirador that we went to today.
And this was the bend that you saw.
And being in this canyon really makes you feel so tiny. Nature tends to do that to us. It really smacks that ego right out of us.
And yeah it brings us back down to earth.
It's especially nice for me to feel tiny sometimes. (Laughing)
Wow here in front of us this is the Cuevas de Colores which is the Cave of Colors.
And you can see all these different colors inside from the minerals.
And we want to dedicate this to our very new patrons, Chip, Ross, Leslie, John and Tammy.
Thank you so much for your contributions they mean the world to us. They make all the difference to us too.
Your are helping us be here today in this incredible experience sharing this incredible day with you.

We are now in the zone of the crocodile. So let's see if we can find one...or two!
Wow! And yup. We spotted two they are right over here up on these rocks.
Huh! There's three actually. Yeah we saw that tail move. Wow
There's four. Is there?
Oh yeah there there's four. It's a crocodile party!
He said here in the river the crocodiles can reach six meters and they live for up to 80 years. That's pretty insane yeah it's incredible
There's another one right over here. Shhhhhh! Don't scare the cocodrilos.
And right over here we see, uno, dos, tres, cuarto, cinco, seis...six crocodiles.
No swimming here people. Safety first!
Wow that was jaw dropping. Oooooo!
I was gonna say CROC-TASTIC!
Oh and this is so interesting.
When you look on the on the flag of Chiapas you will see the Sumidero Canyon on it and it's this part right here.
And we have made it to the end of the canyon right here you can see that that was 13 Kilometers.
13 kilometers of amazing is what that was!
You can see all these lanchas here. We have made it to Chiapa de Corzo. so we are gonna park the
boat and then go get some food.
That was incredibly fun,
but just one thing if you don't speak spanish make sure when you're booking your tour that your tour is going to be in english
because ours was solely in spanish.
We understand some spanish so we did catch bits and pieces but
it kind of would have been nice to know everything. Yeah it's so true.
We are going to head up now and get some food.
I hear somebody's stomach rumbling. I mean I barely only had ice cream and a michelada today. Yeah it's true. Let's go!
Oh and this town looks so cute. It is a pueblo magico.
I don't know if we're gonna have that much time to explore it but if you are in the area
defini. ely come and check it out. Look at these beautiful paintings.
Oh there's the ice cream man. Hola!
And we have made it! It is time to eat. Looks like it's packed. It must be a very good place so this is where all the tours come.
We just arrived at the restaurant that our tour company set up this local buffet at.
Let's go see what they got! It looks like they have some typical dishes as well as some western ones like french fries and pasta.
This drink is called tascalate and it has toasted maize, cacao, canela and achiote,
which makes it this nice orange color. It's like sweet and corny at the same time.
Just like me! Salude! Salude!
Whenever you take a tour you are always stressed for time. So we just like shoveled all that food
in our mouths because we want to head down to the main square and check it out with you.
We'll see you there.
Ice cream car! I've never seen an ice cream car before!
As you know i'm a big snacker/dessert person.
I've seen ice cream trucks in my day. This is an ice cream station wagon people and it looks super delicious.
If we have some time after we check out the square we're coming back to get some.
We have made it to their central park, like the zocalo area, their main plaza.
This is one of our favorite places to come when we're exploring a city.
It's so cool there's people hanging out everywhere. There's music. The birds are chirping.
And right in front of us this is something that is very important for the city.
Chiapa de Corzo is one of four pueblo mexicos found here in Chiapas and when you come to the zocalo
you will see this, which is called La Pila.
It was actually originally a fountain that was built by the Spanish.
It has moorish architecture. So it's not really like anything else you're gonna find in mexico. It's super interesting.
Just another wonderful day here in mexico! Seriously mexico, you never cease to amaze us! It's so true!
Thank you so much for coming along with us as always we love sharing all of our experiences with you.
It would have been nowhere near as much fun if you hadn't been here so, thank you. Yes!
And maybe just one thing I would have liked a lot more time, like, at the viewpoints and even here
here would have been so much fun just being able to sit here and relax and really soak in that culture.
Yeah, but also like doing tours it was 400 pesos, 20 USD. We got the transport, the boat trip,
we got you know everything included. The entrance fees. Yes, except for our food. So yeah I mean it was it
was great if you're on a budget or you just want someone else to do all the work for you. (Laughing)
Well thank you so much again if you enjoyed this video give us a big thumbs up 👍,
