Hi, we are Stephen, Jess, Hunter and baby Koa - an Australian family who have had quite the journey. After travelling the world as a couple in 2020 we had our very first baby, we then spent the following year self-converted a van before moving into it full-time to drive around Australia. Cut to 2023 we welcomed our second child Koa into the world before resuming full-time travel around the world. ------------------------------------------ 0:00 Intro
This episode is brought to you by Squarespace.
We are now in Tanzania.
And it's beautiful.
Hey, are you new here?
We're Stephen, Jess, Hunter and baby Koala.
And we just kicked off a series exploring beautiful East Africa.
We flew to the island of Zanzibar
and are now on a journey to a place
that is a little more of what you think of when you think of Africa.
This is pretty much going to be our home for the next 10 days
as we go and explore Tanzania.
So hit subscribe and come along to see flying the nest
like you've never seen before.
It's not every day that you have a copy from the thing.
It is like almost 6 p.m.
when our pickup is and we're getting one last beautiful sunset here in Zanzibar.
Just look, I'm absolutely going to miss this.
Technically, Zanzibar is part of Tanzania.
So I'll leave those videos below.
Check out what we got up to.
Beautiful start to our Tanzania trip, but we have to head to the airport.
Today is the day we're about to fly to Kilimanjaro Airport.
And the funny thing is that it takes us longer for us to drive
to the Zanzibar airport than it is to fly from Zanzibar to Kilimanjaro.
An hour and a half to drive to the airport and just an hour flight.
But we're going to get ready and get going.
Again, what time is the time right now?
7 p.m.
Yeah. Midnight.
You're kidding me. No, no.
We could have been at the hotel. Why did they message us?
That's us TC124.
What do you mean? Delayed till midnight.
No. So we currently have one little trooper who's like,
Mom, I'm just going to go to sleep while I wait.
I'm like, go for it, girl.
And then we have one guy here who is stoked.
I let him watch a show and he was literally like, wow.
And he's having a chippy.
Is that so good?
Do you like when the plane's delayed, huh?
So it's currently 11pm and we've been here for some reason.
This little dude is still half awake.
We did it, guys.
I feel like that was some.
She just woke up from a lovely five hour nap, though.
Cut the tickets.
Sorry, we're late.
Thank you.
I feel like we're in Africa.
Our home for the next 10 days.
We made it, guys.
I feel like last night we left you off on a bit of a cliffhanger.
We got into the car and we drove out to our accommodation.
Had a beautiful sleep.
We all slept in until 9am, which was very much needed.
But we are now in Tanzania.
And today we are heading to such an iconic place.
We're going to Mount Kilimanjaro, which, just like the Lion King,
it's an epic way to start our adventure here.
You know, waffles filled with cheese.
Whee!
OK, maybe we are still delirious.
So this is pretty much going to be our home for the next 10 days
as we go and explore Tanzania.
We're going to drive to our spots, do our game drives in here.
So we're going to show you pretty much around where we're going to be staying.
So here's Mum and Daddy's seat.
And this is Kawa's little car seat.
And this is my booster seat.
And back here is two more seats and something different.
Do you want Daddy to show you what it is?
I don't think you've ever seen a car with this.
What is it?
There's a Mini Cooper too.
It's a fridge.
I have a fridge.
Wow!
Yeah, let's do it.
Woohoo!
Is he excited?
I think he loves the car.
Look at the traffic here, Hunter.
Look outside.
What?
Yeah.
That's the traffic.
This is the traffic.
Instead of cars, it's big balls.
So we've officially come to our very first place.
We are at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro.
A little bit hard to tell right now because it is quite cloudy.
But today, we've come out to a little local village.
And actually, timing could not be more impeccable.
We've come out to a coffee plantation.
We're going to see how they make coffee out here and hopefully taste some.
So this is what they use to dry the coffee for about two to three weeks.
She was like, what are they roasting?
I go, what's Daddy's favorite drink?
And then she says, are they roasting Coke Zero beans?
But what are they?
Coffee beans.
This is the coffee plant.
This is the coffee.
The green berry, those are not ripe.
OK.
Only the red one, these are the ripe ones.
So when we want to make a cup of coffee, we just pick the red one.
OK.
Yes.
When they pick those off the tree, and then they open them up,
and inside is a coffee bean.
What?
So do you see these?
Can we try and open the one?
You can try and open one.
See if you can find the coffee bean inside.
How about this one?
Well, that's what's inside it.
That's it.
OK, ready?
I'll help you open it.
Oh, no.
Are you opening it?
I found the coffee bean.
That's the coffee bean inside.
See?
Show Dad.
And I found the coffee bean.
It was inside there.
Then they roast it on the fire.
What?
And then they make coffee?
Uh-huh.
So here we put the beans.
We do this action.
Exactly.
And while we do this, we have some local motivation song
we sing.
You have to concentrate on the song, not on the job,
so you never get tired.
Yes, yes.
She did a great job.
Look, I see some seeds coming out.
The beans are coming out.
So it's.
Oh, you want to do it again?
Ready?
Yeah, I'm ready.
So you can see, now we managed to remove the second shell.
So then we have to separate the second shell away
from the coffee beans.
So you just help me to remove the remain of the second shell
to make it more clean.
Yes, thanks.
Hey, everybody.
We just want to say a massive thank you
to our longtime friends who have massively supported
our family over the years.

And back to the video.
I feel like it's not every day
that you have a coffee made right in front of you
from the bean to the cup.
Oh, that's good.
Organic coffee.
Yeah, we literally did the entire process
from picking to separating to grounding
to roasting to crushing, sifting, brewing.
Jeez, makes you appreciate your coffee, right?
When you just pick it up.
It really does.
I will be honest with you guys.
I'm definitely a milk drinker coffee,
but this has so much flavor.
They sell some bags of coffee.
I think we need to pick some up.
So we just had a super delicious lunch
just right there in the community.
After we munched on a bunch of coffee beans.
Kind of cool.
It's about a community of about a thousand people
and they specialize in two things
and both include the coffee bean and the banana.
And the banana they actually use to brew banana beer.
So that's what they make.
That's kind of like their livelihood.
And of course, allowing us to come and experience it.
And I feel so thankful.
This is like day one
and this is literally our kids' classroom right now.
But now after lunch,
we decided we probably need to do a bit of a walk.
Wow.
I'm tootsie chameleon.
What colors is it right now?
Green.
Green to match the leaf.
So we've hiked out to see a waterfall.
Oh, I spotted a waterfall.
And Banquo Manjaro is there somewhere,
but he's saying they get super shy during the day.
And the best time to see the mountain
is morning, sunrise, evening, sunset.
The sun has opened up for us
just as we arrived at the waterfall
and look how breathtaking it is thundering down
as we're at the foot of Mount Manjaro.
But look, woo, it's so refreshing.
Good morning, everybody.
As you can see, we've come to a hotspot here in Tanzania.
We have just come out to Tarangire National Park.
This is a sanctuary for elephants.
So this is going to be our first safari.
We pretty much just pulled up
after driving about three hours
from our accommodation last night.
And it's going to be cool
because Koaw has never seen elephants in his entire life.
And this is a very cool place
for him to see it for his first time.
What is that?
They call that a little mini elephant graveyard.
Oh my gosh, the skull is huge.
Do you know who belongs to this?
And that big one?
That is, it's an elephant skull.
And look, look at the elephant's head.
I think that one's a buffalo, is it?
That's a buffalo, I think.
But Hunter, guess what?
That's like one part of its leg.
It's this bone here, Hunter.
And that's just that.
So one of their bones is almost as big as you.
Excuse me, I need to go for a second.
What's happened to the roof of the car?
Huh?
Oh no, what's happened, Hunter?
It is, what's happened to the roof?
What the?
It got flipped up.
It got flipped up?
Does that mean we're about to go on safari?
Yeah.
Safari.
Good job.
Show mommy how you're using it.
All right, you know why?
Turn it the other way around.
There we go.
We've just entered the National Park
and this place is known as Elephant's Paradise.
This place is home to almost 4,500 elephants.
So I'm sure we're gonna spot some today.
We've already spotted two zebras, but no elephants yet.
What do you see, honey?
Kawa, do you see the animals out there?
What is that?
Look.
Do you see the zebra?
Zebra.
I think there's more here.
Yeah.
There's zebra.
Baby.
Baba.
Colby, look at the giraffe.
Look at that giraffe, Hunter.
It's a giraffe.
We are currently surrounded by like five or six giraffes.
You wanna see?
They're eating together, see?
Oh, look, it's looking at you.
Why?
Oh, it's gonna walk right back over.
These ones are so cool.
Look at this.
Oh my gosh, we're surrounded by elephants.
Wow, I spot lots of them.
You see lots of them.
What do you see?
Elephant.
It's a family, Hunter.
Hunter, do you see how there's some kids and some adults?
Oh my gosh.
That's a four-year-old one.
You reckon that's a four-year-old, like you?
Yeah, that's a kid one.
So she's the boss mama.
It's called a matriarch.
Look, there's the boss mama.
Oh my gosh.
All right, Kawa, are you ready to see elephants?
Do you remember what an elephant says?
What's an elephant say?
All right, you ready to see it?
Here we go.
This is so cool,
because it's all like the first time
he's ever seen these animals.
It's here.
It's an elephant.
Well, that was so cool.
They're so close.
Kawa, what do you think of seeing your first
African elephant?
Woken up an appetite from looking at all those animals.
Amazing what we've seen so far.
Of course, there are big cats here,
but I think we're gonna have better luck
in the Serengeti National Park,
but we've just come for lunch,
and it's so interesting.
We all have to eat inside these cages,
because, of course, you're not really supposed
to be leaving your vehicle.
So we're having a very romantic lunch inside our cage.
We are the zoo.
We're officially the zoo.
We're in the cages.
This bird can get in there.
Look at it.
So Singers World Safari,
they don't say bon appetit.
We've learned from Domi here that they say
baboon up a tree.
So baboon up a tree, everyone.
Baboon up a tree, come on.
There's so many animals down there, Steve.
All by the water.
Coming to the end, I think, now of the dry season.
And you can see how the water's barely anything left.
So beautiful.
And that arid landscape.
So beautiful.
Love after a safari.
No matter what, your clothes are gonna be dusty.
You're gonna be dirty.
You're gonna be sweating.
But it's such an amazing feeling
after you have such an incredible,
oh, that is the most wild elephants
I've ever seen in my life.
It was so cool seeing that,
seeing the Tanzanian giraffes.
So you can see they're like a little bit
of a different color, a bit of a darker color.
Never seen them before.
Beautiful day.
This is like day two here in mainland Tanzania,
and it's been already so good.
But we thought we'd show you guys
where we're staying tonight.
You're welcome.
What juice is this?
Hibiscus juice.
Hibiscus juice?
What do you think of flower juice?
I love it.
You love it?
Mommy, I'm having hibiscus juice.
Don't take it off.
I won't.
Someone likes it.
We're on Minyara Lake.
And the place we're staying at is Minyara's secret.
And I think I found the secret.
It's the Baobab, Baobab, Baoban, Baobab room
we're staying in.
You can see why they call it that room,
where this pillar is absolutely incredible.
Look at this.
Can I see the tickets we have for you?
Wow.
Wait, you have a, oh no.
What is that?
What?
Wow.
Look at the Baobab tree.
This is so gorgeous.
Oh my gosh.
I literally saw a picture of a pool,
Baobab tree in front of it.
Not expecting it to be our room.
Alrighty.
Let's show you this.
We've managed to walk into this gigantic living space
we've got just here.
There is a desk around the corner.
If you need to use a desk,
I will not be doing any work while I'm here.
I am enjoying.
And then actually, this place can hold like,
it's got four rooms.
Down here, we've got another master bedroom
and then two smaller bedrooms back there.
But I need to show you this master bedroom.
It is beautiful.
So pretty much walk through here.
You've got your freestanding wooden four poster bed
with just views of the lake in front of us.
Wow.
And then I have to show you this
because they also have a outdoor shower,
which in Africa is just the best
because you can look over the Savannah.
You can look over the lake.
Wow.
I'm doing a very quick tour
because the secret is what I want to go and hang out in.
And we only have so much light left.
It is like 5.30.
Remember what this room was called?
The Baobab room.
And this is why.
Look at that.
Daddy, you have to climatize.
I have to climatize?
Daddy, you have to come in the pool.
Of course.
Daddy, you have to come in the pool.
Wow.
What a way to end our first day after safari.
Like this is just literally what dreams are made of.
The Baobab tree right here with the sunset over the lake.
I saw some Maasai getting water from the lake as well
because there's actually a Maasai village
nearby.
Spoilers for the next episode.
This place is definitely going to be very comfortable
compared to tomorrow night.
Why don't you think we have a bed?
Actually got a really funny story to share with you guys.
You're probably wondering
who we're exploring Tanzania with.
It's definitely one of those countries
you probably recommend you guys jump on like a private tour
or a group tour with.
We literally wouldn't be here
if it wasn't for a little moment in time.
You guys watched last year,
we headed to a country called Bhutan
and that place gets like less than 200,000 tourists a year.
And the majority of those tourists are generally from India
and from neighboring countries.
So we were doing the hike up to Tiger's Nest,
absolutely bucket list moment.
And on the way down, a lady, her name was Iris,
recognized us.
She's like, hey, I watch your guys' videos.
And we're like, oh, that's amazing.
You're the first tourist we've seen
on this entire week trip.
She's like, I run like trips around the world.
Let's chat.
So this was like, we're in Africa, of course,
Tanzania, all around the world.
I'll link them below.
I mean, we've been with them for three days
and highly recommend checking them out.
I'll leave a little link to like the exact trip we're on.
So you guys can get a little teaser
on what's coming up in the future videos
and you can see what we get up to.
Alrighty.
Everybody, fan band.
What was Hunter's favorite animals we saw today?
The giraffes?
I did all.
Hunter.
They just brought us dessert, but Koaw didn't last.
He's asleep.
And so Hunter saw that there was one extra chocolate scoop
of ice cream.
Lucky you.
I thought that was for us.
I know, I was like, oh, don't worry,
I'll help finish Koaw's, but no.
And I got passion sorbet.
That is so good.
Passion fruit sorbet with fruit.
It's so good.
Wow.
What a way to end a day on safari.
And we might actually end the video here
because tomorrow we have a very, very fun stay.
Let's just say we're staying
somewhere completely different to this.
And I don't think chocolate brownies
are going to be on the menu.
I don't think a bed is on the menu.
Thanks so much, guys.
If you want to check out the tour we're doing,
we'll link it below,
but it has been so amazing this last two days.
We'll see you next time.
Bye.
