Italy is wonderful

We're here in Bologna, the food capital of Italy. We've only got two days here so we're going to
try and jam as much good local food in as we can. We are so excited and we'll take you along with us.
Welcome to beautiful Bologna, the heart of Italy's Emilia-Romagna region. As soon as our feet touched
down in Italy we were salivating at the thought of the incredible food that we were going to have
here. We know that the Italian take their food seriously so for Bologna to be considered the
food capital of the country we were hoping to be in for something special. We only had two days here
so we wanted to make sure that every meal we had was on point. Let's see if we nailed it.
We've been in Bologna for about 30 seconds and we're already thinking about food. We're on our
way to go get our first piadina which is a bit different to a panini which is a bread roll.
It's more like a flatbread wrapped with some meats inside. We're so excited. Let's go check it out.
We've just got our first piadina and beer because there's a special going on. So we've got some
dried tomatoes, stracciatella cheese and the famous Bologna mortadella. Let's give it a go.
Mortadella reminds me of my childhood but this is much better than mortadella I remember back
in Australia. Those dried tomatoes are delicious. Crispy quite outside on the bread. 10 out of 10.
We had had a taste of the famous Bologna mortadella at the markets
that only left us wanting more. We'd heard that the best around town was at Mo Mortadella Lab
so thought we had to give this place a try. There was a solid line when we got there
which only gave us more confidence that we'd picked the right place.
It smells intoxicating. So we've gotten some mortadella which Bologna is super famous for.
We've gone to apparently the best which is Mortadella Mo. We've gotten it with like a pistachio grain
and a local cheese which is called squaccaroni I think. It's meant to be a little bit of a sour
creamy cheese. I can't wait to dig in. It smells so good. Go give it a bite let us know how it is.
Do you prefer that or the piadina? I think this. The mortadella is just so salty.
I haven't made it to much of the cheese yet but the mortadella is delicious and salty and this
bread is so crunchy on the outside but so soft quite through it. A perfect bread roll.
With the summer heat starting to beat down on us we needed something to cool us down
and what better way than a scoop or two of gelato.
Luckily we were super close to Cremaria Cavour which was on our list of must-try places.
First gelato of the trip. I got a white chocolate with crispy rice. It's really good.
Sounds random. Tastes delicious. The hardest part of only spending two days in Bologna
was trying to narrow down the long list of restaurants we wanted to try.
For our first night we chose the Cesare Ristorante which felt super local and like
a Bologna institution. We started strong with some incredible eggplant parmigiana
then for mains we had to get the famous slow-cooked bolognese ragu that the city is famous for.
We paired this with a delicious tortellini with shaved truffles and surprisingly Grace
and I both agreed that the tortellini was the winner of the two.
On day two we made the tactical decision to skip breakfast
and headed back to the Mercato di Mezzo. We agreed that we each got to choose a dish.
I was up first and unsurprisingly picked another pasta.
Tortellini is the Bologna thing so we've got one with taleggio and walnuts.
And a spritz to wash it down.
The taleggio inside is super sharp and really soft pasta. Absolutely delicious.
Next it was my turn and I decided to return back to the same place as yesterday
but instead of the piadina I wanted to try the shaved meat platter with fluffy crescentinas.
Freshly cut mortadella, freshly cut prosciutto and the crescentinas I think they're called
freshly cooked to order as well so they came straight out of the fryer
straight onto our plate piping hot with a salty prosciutto.
That's good.
We're waiting for a bus for possibly the most exciting adventure yet.
We're going to go and find potentially the world's best gelato. I am so excited.
The afternoon gelato yesterday was so good that we decided we are now ready for round two.
This time we chose cremeria santo stefano so we hopped on a bus to take us to the promised land.
So I got a chocolate and then a caramel speculoos with some biscuit through it.
I'm only getting the chocolate flavor at the moment but that is good chocolate gelato.
Highly recommend and see why they think it's the best gelato in Italy.
It's all over me.
So I got cafe bianco white coffee and then a hazelnut praline.
That is so weird even though it's like snow white it has a really strong coffee flavor.
Yeah it's called white coffee.
That praline is divine.
I saw this and I couldn't help myself so I had to get another little treat as well.
It's like a bougie maxi bon.
I actually prefer a maxi bon.
The biscuit of a maxi bon is softer and thicker.
Delicious gelato though.
With a bit of time before dinner we decided to make the most of the sunny evening and have a
which specialized in delicious natural wines.
We've just sat down for dinner night two at Al Sangiovese.
We've got two really traditional dishes coming I can't wait.
I'm about to dig into the lasagna verde.
That's incredible.
What makes it green?
Good question.
And I've got the Gramigna traditional Bologna pasta which is like sausage in the
I think it comes in a tomato batch or a cream sauce.
This is sausage in a cream sauce with some pepper through it looks delicious.
Tasty.
It is really tasty.
We've swapped out dishes I've just had the lasagna.
That is the best meal I've had in such a long time it is incredible.
I'm so blown away by that.
Wow when you're in Bologna you have to get the traditional lasagna verde.
It is amazing.
We've done a bit of a whoopsie and went really hard on the pastas
for the entrees and we're not that hungry anymore.
But the codaletta's come out it looks incredible it's got like prosciutto or parma ham
cheese on top of the beautiful cooked veal crumb schnitzel.
I love a schnitzel back home it's beautiful.
So we just finished at Al Sangiovese and it was incredible.
The highlight was without a doubt the lasagna that was a 10 out of 10 dish.
I'd eat three of those.
I would 100% revisit.
Highly recommend.
Yum.
It was only a short and sweet trip to Bologna but from the delicious
thinly sliced mortadella to the mouth-watering lasagna verde
it was certainly worth a visit for the incredible food.
We have left so many dishes untasted and restaurants left sitting on our list.
We will most definitely be coming back here again as soon as we can.
