Barry you know it and I know it we are
two days away from
Christmas and Santa Claus is going to be
dropping in dropping off some gifts here
few gifts there here a gift there a gift
everywhere a gift
gift feel sorry for Santa this year it's
going to be cold riding in that's like
no I know I know I know it is
December and it's normally cold and in
in some parts of the country some parts
of the world s's going to freeze his
butt you know and what about those
reindeer how do Rudolph get that red
nose from a from a beautiful day I don't
think so at any rate you know what it's
like in our backyard why am I looking at
somebody walking in this parking lot
right now no coat on you have got to be
kidding me uh what is the temperature
Swansea
22 aush at 24 New Bedford
24 this morning unbelievable I think it
was ° women Fred it was
9° it was her turn to get out of bed and
turn on the
heat are you like that
instead of turning the temperature down
to let's say 63 64 62 you just turn that
sucker
off we turn it off at night and turn it
on in the morning because it's cold I
think um I think it was 57
[Music]
59° it's okay about a half hour it's
nice and
warm and on the days that she charged
with getting up and turning it
on I am nice and toasty in between the
covers
8996 0500 to get on to the program today
speaking of
today December
23rd it is human
light celebration as in you know like
the lights are
shining human light celebration
now I don't know how many people here in
the United States are are really getting
down on this but it is also metric
conversion
day remember all the big talk back in
the
1970s we're got to go to the metric
system I was running a radio station in
I think it was
1978 and I guess I fell into the into
the position
of saying okay well if if we're going
metric let's just blindly go n metric
and
so I took the studio thermometer which
was a digital type of thing and I put it
on the Celsius so we were just reading
Celsius and folks are saying but if you
do that nobody's going to be able to
tell you what the temperature is and I
said after a while people will start
realizing when it's 10° it's either cold
or it's hot when it's 30° it's either
hot or it's
cold no biggie just do
it that didn't last too long at any rate
Fahrenheit 22 in Swansea 24 in ausnet
and New Bedford on this metric
conversion day and it's also national
roots day know like the root of a
tree national roots day not quite sure
what that means I do know what this
meant when it happened back in
1783 on this very date George Washington
who was General Washington at that
particular time George Washington
resigns as commanderin-chief
of the Continental Army
great job
George you know I I've been told such as
to believe and I've done a little
reading George Washington did not win a
whole bunch of
battles I guess we should be glad for
the ones that he
won is that
amazing you know we I as a kid I just
thought you know George
Washington he slayed the Dragon
and I suppose he did but there were lots
of
defeats
[Music]
1888 and I've always wondered about this
one maybe you have to
1888 to prove his point and win an
argument Vinnie Vincent Van go took a
razor and lopped off his left
ear and and then and then he had the
year sent to a female friend for
safekeeping now you you got to love an
artist like
that I'm proving my point
whoop and off goes the year
yeah woman friend is an artist I hope
she doesn't take it that deep and decide
to cut off an ear
here's something that yours truly and I
hope you have come to
regret this particular
day 1913 President woodro
Wilson
with a stroke of his pen and his
signature
created the Federal Reserve System
I remember this this was this was big
news during a a very turbulent
time
after 11 months as prisoners December 23
1968 the sailors on the USS PLO released
by North
Korea remember that and you know we had
Vietnam going on at that particular time
and they were s now we're going to go to
war with North Korea I mean we've
already had something up in the Korean
Peninsula that was that was quite the
thing in a year where we had
already
[Music]
seen Lyndon Baines Johnson bow out of
the
[Music]
presidency we saw Dr King get assassin
at RFK get assassinated of
really really scary 1968 the Democratic
Convention and then uh some
relief when those
Sailors were released now I don't know
all the EX's and O's and I don't know
that we ever will know all of the X's
and O's dealing with exactly why North
Korea thought it
was their
[Music]
privilege to um to take the to take them
as prisoners I I I really don't know and
it wasn't a quick 11 months 11
months
1970 the North Tower of the the World
Trade Center reaches
[Music]
1,368 ft making it the tallest building
in the
world
wow and then September 11th happened and
it just
crumbled
1,368 ft North Tower
after 73 days of resorting to
cannibalism
16 survivors of the Andes crash rescued
on this date in
1972 I remember writing
that
and I said to myself you know you had
your 50
High School reunion just a few months
ago can you
imagine what a reunion of of those
survivors must be
like we made it but look what we
did we had to survive but look look what
we did to
survive imagine what that reunion must
be I wonder if they still get together
wow and in saying something like
that the experience of a of an airplane
jetliner
crash might change your opinion about
ever flying again I wonder if any of
them have have boarded an airline to fly
from point A to point B for whatever for
whatever reason maybe the
so-called
reunion all right so we get to the quote
of the day we manage to hang in
there
today when people get married there's a
tendency to run away when things get
tough there is a lot of strength in
hanging to
together that
quote
from the late actor comedian Jerry
Stiller we managed to hang in there
together today when people get married
there's a tendency to run away when
things get tough there is a lot of
strength in hanging in
there Jerry Stiller why why bring that
up on this particular day
because today is also that day that we
call
Festivus for the rest of
us yeah today the
23rd do ever celebrated or is it just
one of those those episodes you love to
to see even in repeats because it is
funny it is one that I I actually sit
there and and pay attention to and watch
quite frankly as much as I I liked
Seinfeld at the time those episodes are
starting to wear on
me and so a woman friend you she she
just loves them to death but
um I stopped I I I just stopped but that
episode when it's
on I'm into it all right 508
9965 00 is how you get on to the program
today two days two days
away from from
Christmas and I don't
know how you celebrate if you
celebrate but there are many people that
I know that on Christmas Eve they'll
either have a big Christmas Eve dinner
and then also o have another one on
Christmas day there are others that do
take out or go out to eat on on
Christmas
Eve and then have a big dinner on on
Christmas night and then there are folks
who don't celebrate
Christmas what do they
do it seems to me there aren't too many
restaurants open on Christmas Eve
Chinese restaurants yeah maybe the
Indian restaurant up the street I don't
know
but most restaurants are closed on
Christmas Eve so so employees can be
with their
family so I'm looking over the
substandard
today and uh Faith
Harrington has an
article greater New Bedford restaurants
we said goodbye to in 2024
and I don't know if this list is longer
or
shorter than last
year but as I look at the list I'm
saying to myself I
hope that the list that comes out for
next year is shorter than the list for
this year we lost quite a few
restaurants Matt's Blackboard and um
rockchester
Dicky's
clamshack you know I I would drive by
Dicky clamshack quite a bit I I never
went in I never went in maybe that's
part of the problem and maybe that's why
they're close Dicky Clam Shack on um
over
by what's that gol a catty Shack over by
kades Shack and
Dartmouth then of course it was it was a
big blow to me probably to you two when
freest
Stones freest Stones
restaurant threw in the
towel according to the standard Times
article by faith
Harrington the co-owner hoe
mows said that the summertime was a
difficult time for the restaurant
however the ultimate decision to close
Freeones
was after the chef and the cook both
resigned
wow so I guess in this day and age you
lose one Chef you lose a
cook and there's nobody else howwi he
mows he has his fingers in the pie on on
many restaurant establishments in New
edford in Freetown all over the
place he couldn't talk one of those one
of those folks hey can you help me out
pay you x amount of
dollars freest
stones may not have been the very first
restaurant in New Bedford that I went
into but it was the first restaurant
that I frequented
I had some neighbors that worked there
and I always thought their menu was was
very good their prices
were a little on the high side but
reasonable and I would go back I love
their seafood
chowder but you know how things go one
ownership changes another one comes in
and it's and it's not the same
and then
um some good friends of mine uh one of
the one of the uh Dynamic duel Jillian
Conor used to come on to this program
excuse me on to Bryan's beat on on
Saturday with me do company which opened
up down in the South
End when they closed that
completely caught me by
surprise and
and quite honestly I I I still want to
know what the heck happened
there Dough Company a combination of
economic challenges and and personal
reasons boy doesn't that open up a can
of worms Mimi's Kitchen on
nset that went out of
business remember when we heard that
comines was going to close was only
going to close for a few days and then
it was going to
reopen well a few
days back in October is now stretching
like your coffee break into
January and I
believe don't quote me on this but I
believe it's going to be under the
ownership of the of the guy who owns
the black whale so imagine you've got
the black
whale you've got formerly
Carmines and then I
believe I believe the Mexican restaurant
that's going to open up at the base of
Union in in Route
18 is also going to be what of his
restaurants
might be a monopoly might not be but at
any
rate it's funny when you have all these
restaurants and in one particular hand
or two
Rustico never went into
Rustico it's on um Maran Road and matap
poet that's Route
Six in matap poison and then of course
golden bamboo and East wereham really
good Chinese restaurant Asian infusion I
guess you could call it but U really
good and your dog
Mill supposed to
close yeah in a couple of couple of
days man it's a lot and
then at the beginning of next
year Gary's best hot dogs
yeah I might have a hard time calling
Gary's best a
restaurant but it it serves its patrons
very very
well and you know I saying goodbye is
tough I get
it wanting to go on and do other stuff
with your life have a good time with the
rest of your life I get it I get it very
well but um
you would think somebody would want to
take over that kind of place all right
508 996
0500 maybe you missed
it Governor Healey
says Massachusetts is not I repeat is
not a sanctuary
state do you believe her right up northr
you know that I know make a
stop that was
me 58 996 0500 Santa Claus going to make
a little stomp North Front in Dean
Street we'll find out where else he's
going to be going over the holiday at
any
rate Governor Healey having a
conversation with the the Boston Herald
and a few
others and
here's a direct quote we're not a
sanctuary
State we have a limited budget and the
emergency shelter system really was
meant for Massachusetts families who
were experiencing
homelessness or housing
insecurity and needed a place to go that
was temporary
H
well it seems to me
I could be wrong but it seems to me
Governor Healey if if that's what it was
meant for you have certainly opened up
the door to allow a lot more people in
you did not to the best of my knowledge
and I could be wrong about
this but to the best of my knowledge
Governor Healey you did not try to get
somebody on your staff or yourself to
file some type of
legislation and send it up to the B Hill
lawmakers so they could if they wanted
to
pass your bill to make this only for
families here in the Commonwealth
there's no residency Clause you could
have put into that but to the best of my
knowledge you haven't done
that and then you have the
nerve to say that Massachusetts is not a
sanctuary state
I think many people believe that we are
in a sanctuary State whether they want
to be in one or not I believe that many
folks believe that we are I come from
the camp that
says let's vote on
it let's not leave it up to Bacon Hill
lawmakers let's not leave it up to
Governor
Healey let's not leave it up to the
attorney general let's let's leave it to
the people to
decide I think that a ballot question to
determine a if we are a sanctuary City
another ballot question to determine uh
you know because folks might vote it in
that we are a sanctuary City Sanctuary
state folks might vote it in so then
what are the parameters
do we just give out tax dollars do we
open up even more so the shelter
system if the 's and mes don't make a
decision somebody else is going to do it
and I was reading I don't know if it
was in the globe or maybe it was the
Boston
Herald Governor hey is going to be
more more willing
to work with and accommodate the Trump
Administration and I sat I was reading I
was watching the football game a
football game I don't think the Patriots
were on at that particular time and I'm
reading this and I read it to woman
friend and you know we we paused for a
little bit then I kept on reading and
then you know ding ding ding ding ding
ding ding it hit
home why is Governor Healey trying to
break break bread with Donald
Trump I don't think she's scared of
him but here is what I believe she is
scared
of she's
worried that if she doesn't try to play
ball with this Administration that all
of a sudden a lot of the money because
let's face it the Commonwealth gets
billions in other people's including our
own tax
dollars and if we don't play ball and
I'm not exactly sure exact exactly what
playing ball means I don't think
Governor Healey is sure what playing
ball means and it's not just immigration
they going to be a lot of games could be
education all of a
sudden we're not going to be getting
money isn't that what yours truly at
least has been
bitching about it's about the
money billions of dollars come
in for education for research and
development Medical Technology medical
dollars Medicare medical
insurance banking money all kinds of
money comes courtesy of our federal tax
back here to the Commonwealth and you
wonder why things are so expensive
because folks around here can afford it
maybe not here in the
backyard but certainly here in the
Commonwealth all right let's uh let's
open it up
five8 9960 500 you're first up today
hello hello
hello I don't want you opening anything
up to me all right then good night you
just how you doing easy come easy go I'm
if I were doing any better I mean I'm
I'm I'm ticked there' be two of you
three of you yeah I'm yeah I'm I'm a
little ticked you know oh she wants to
play nice to Donald
Trump because she's worried about losing
billions of
dollars well you asked the question I
think or sort of paraphrased the
question about uh Massachusetts in a
sanctuary State and it said on ju July
2017 massachus Supreme Court Supreme
Judicial Court issued ruling in the Lun
versus Commonwealth case which
effectively made the state a sanctuary
State and I don't know that case but
that was back in
2017 and the problem is she's you know
she's on a a teeter totter by herself
she running from one end of the board to
the other depending on what end is up in
the air I guess kind of like is that
like what you lick your finger and then
you put it up in the air and see where
which way the wind is
blowing I don't know that yeah I guess I
I mean I I just see the fact that she
goes down to the Border while she's not
before she was a governor to basically
say everyone should come up from Tijana
and then you know stop go stop go stop
go it all depends right right but but
you know if if I believed her then I
would see her stopping funding um or
trying to fund this stuff but and then
I'm sure she'll say that you know she's
dealing with the hand she was dealt and
uh and Eric Adams was dealt the same
hand but he
obviously um has changed his tune and
you know he's still he was originally a
Republican and that doesn't really
matter but I think that he sees it like
it's not a um it's not very sustainable
based on the tax dollars that are coming
in and unless the federal government
just prints money it's not sustainable
so um I can agree with that and I and if
I could add on to it I would say he's
also hearing from from the people and
maybe more a Healy is hearing from the
people too who knows because there are
plenty of folks here at least in you
know the vote in the Commonwealth was
overwhelmingly for KLA Harris but there
are enough people in the Commonwealth
come uh November of 26 is it yeah
November of 26 that could easily change
that vote around and vote for whatever
Republican whatever libertarian whatever
green party person
well you know I know I have a lot of
friends that are Democrats and actually
quite a few that are barely left
progressives and uh you know a lot of
these experimental programs whether it's
a new green deal or whether it's opening
the borders up or or whatever whatever I
don't know that anyone ever really just
thought about the consequences they just
sort of maybe thought at least the
people I talk to they they think that we
have an unlimited source of funding and
ability to to man manage the world um
you know just you know and and and
that's not the case I mean it does it
does harm people I mean I know that
there's crime that is a residual from
that I mean I don't blame every illegal
alien is not a criminal um but yeah I
mean New York City has been having a
disaster you saw what happened in New
York yesterday they had an illegal alien
burn a homeless person on a train
yesterday person was sleeping on the
train car and the guy lit the person on
fire and they were
and killed him and he sat in while the
train was stopped he sat in a in a bench
on the outside and watched it happen and
they they busted the guy obviously and
maybe the guy got severe mental issues
if you're going to do something like
that but we we got enough of our own
problems you know you think um I I think
and I I think we should help people I
think that that's the we're coming into
the time of uh Jesus and that's what
Jesus would have done um to to whatever
ability that you can do and I don't
think we have you know when we're
prosperous I think we have the ability
to do a lot for people around the world
and if we're not in Wars at the same
time so um I'm just hoping for the
future you know I got you man hey if I
don't talk to you before Mary happy
happy Mary Mary happy to you too I
really appreciate you on the air man I
appreciate it too thank you and I
appreciate your call 508 9960 500 it's
time to pay one of Barry's bills
oh can also do the the south second side
too that's James
Brown Santa Claus go straight to the
ghetto thought that would be appropriate
a couple of days before xmus and by the
way you ever
notice you don't have as many people
putting Christmas down as
