Hello, today we are going to learn the character shì.
The ancient Chinese character for shì comes from the combination of the handling equipment
made of the three branches and the hand, indicating engaging in doing something.
So shì means matter, thing. Now read after me.
matter, thing, affair. Now let's have a look at the most often usage of shì.
The two expressions can be used in different situations. For example, if someone comes to
you and you don't know the reason, you could ask
What's up? What's the matter? Or if someone doesn't look good and you want to show your concern,
you could also use the expression
What's the matter? What happened? And if you want to date someone, you could ask first
Are you busy tomorrow? Have you got anything to do tomorrow?
And if you're not busy and available, you could answer
The negative form for you doesn't help. And may shì can be also used in other situations.
For example, if someone asks you
What's the matter? What happened? You could answer
to represent I'm okay. I'm fine. I'm all right. Also, if someone said sorry,
and you could also answer may shì, which means never mind.
Okay, that's all for today. See you next time.
