Hey skaters! I'm Dirty Deborah Harry with the Dirty School of Skate and Sure Grip Roller Skates.
I'm here again at the Fountain Valley Skating Center tonight to talk to you about the three
easiest ways to stop. This is part of the quick and dirty series. In the quick and dirty series
I don't do what some of you complain about, going on and on and on for like 20 minutes on
one subject in roller skating, which I love to do, but I'm gonna do these ones real quick.
Now maybe you just bought roller skates, so this is a good time to figure out how to stop.
I'm going to walk you through three different easy ways to do it, but let's say you don't have
roller skates or you need your skates upgraded. I need you to go to planetrollerskate.shop.
The gals there are going to help you out. You can send them messages, ask them questions,
and they can help you with skates, plates, boots, wheels, accessories, and all that good stuff.
Okay skaters, let's get started. So one of the first main ways how to stop? Run into stuff,
okay? Maybe you're outdoors and you run into a light pole. Maybe it's a car. Hopefully it's
stuck. Most commonly if you're at the rink it's a wall. When you go skating and the wall just,
you know, appears in front of you and you're like, here comes a wall and I've got to stop,
it is a legit way to stop. You just got to do one thing so you don't get your butt kicked by
the wall. Here's a wall. Let's run into it. Follow me. I'm gonna skate forward. I'm like,
oh my god. I put my arms out, bend my knees, bend my elbows. Okay listen, the wall is permanent.
You are not. You are moving. Wall still. Some sort of science going on. I don't know what it's
called, but you have to embrace the wall. Meaning you've got to bend your elbows and bend your knees.
One more time. I'm skating towards it. You know why I'm running into it? Because I'm looking at
it, okay? Skate forward. Bend your knees. Bend your elbows. Now, you've been around a rink as
long as I have. Don't stay there too long. Number one, you're gonna get run over by other people.
Number two, it might not be as clean as you think, okay? No shame. We get a lot of people in this
place. We vacuum. We replace carpet and all that jazz. You don't want to be all up on their
mugging on the dirty carpet, okay? Number two, you gotta know how to shift your body weight in
order to stop. You're gonna be like, oh my god, I gotta stop. You're gonna get down low. You're
gonna spread your legs. You're gonna sit your butt down again. Really bend your knees. Couple
of things that I'm doing that you may not be able to see. I'm standing up and I've got both my legs
fairly straight. Bend both knees. Spread my legs not much beyond my hip and then sit my butt down
again for a second drop of the body weight. Your knees have to be over your big toes. You need to
be on the ball of your foot. You're driving your body weight through from your knees through your
skate over the ball of your foot kind of like this. Like get yourself in the stance that you
never want to do when you're weightlifting which is knees over big toes. That's really the stance
you gotta be in. I'm up. I'm down. I spread them. Knees over big toes and I get down again. Now,
this stop is going to bring you to a nice easy stop and I'm not gonna lie, you're not gonna get
on the first try. Don't go quitting on me. I need you to practice, practice, practice, practice.
One big thing is don't bend over. I need you to sit like you're on a port-a-potty and you don't
want to commit to the seated position on the port-a-potty, okay? Number three, you gotta learn
how to use your toe stop. You've got them on your feet. You just bought skates, new skates, whatever.
More than likely you're gonna have toe stop. This is how you use them. Got my arms out. Bend my knees.
Shift or rock my body weight over to one foot. Extend the other foot and drag my toe stop. Now,
you got two different ways you can do this. You can do this with straight body posture
or totally bent. Let's do straight first. Down. Shifting my body weight to my left.
Really bending my left knee. Extend. Point my toe and I come up. When I'm up in this position,
everything is tight from the ass down. Tight, tight muscles are flexed. My core is flexed.
Everything's flexed. Hell, I'm even out arching my back trying to stop. You could do it that way or
let's just bend our knees and do it, okay? We're down. Keep it down and drag, drag, drag, drag,
drag, drag, drag until you come to a stop, okay? So those are the three ways that you need to know
how to stop. I need you to practice these over and over and over until they feel like
butter. Now, link below, I'll put all the different stopping videos because I have these detailed out
like crazy so you can spend 20 minutes on learning how to do a plow stop, okay? I'll link those,
but what I need you to do, hopefully practice, and then like, subscribe,
and share, and I would be so excited. Thank you so much. Go practice.
