Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's comments sparking backlash from leaders around the country,
including those in her own party.
It's a historic anti-Semitic trope about greed and money and related to Jews and I think
that's what set many of us off.
New Jersey's Josh Gottheimer was among several Democrats urging swift action to address what
they called hateful speech after the tweet by the Capitol Hill newcomer suggesting American
support for Israel is fueled by money.
It's all about the Benjamins baby, then further implying the powerful pro-Israel lobby group
AIPAC had bought support of her colleagues in Congress.
Senator Chuck Schumer wrote this kind of intolerance has no place in Congress or in anywhere in
American society.
That's wrong and it should stop.
While Republicans called for her to be removed from the Foreign Affairs Committee, House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke with the freshman under fire and called her comments anti-Semitic
and deeply offensive.
It was after that that the 37-year-old from Minnesota issued a statement saying anti-Semitism
is real.
This is why I unequivocally apologize.
It's time that we all move on from this, we unite and we focus on how we can build a better
country.
Omar made history as one of the first Muslim women ever elected to Congress and supports
a movement that calls for a boycott of Israel until property is returned to the Palestinians.
Many point out this isn't the first time she's had to apologize for hurtful comments.
In 2012, she wrote Israel has hypnotized the world.
Political science professor Alan Sanders says she cannot be given a pass for her language.
It generates a lot of animosity from the Jewish community and from people who understand the
discrimination that Jewish people have suffered and don't want to suffer anymore.
So what does AIPAC think of all this?
The organization tweeted in part, we will not be deterred in any way by ill-informed
and illegitimate attacks on this important work.
And President Trump weighed in tonight saying the freshman member of Congress should be
ashamed of herself.
Meanwhile, in one of Omar's latest tweets, she says, listening and learning, but standing
strong.
