Morning everyone, so in this video we're going to start putting up the barn. Oh hello puss,
you want to go in? Come on in, there we go. Yeah, in this video we're going to start putting up the
barn. It's pretty exciting, it's been a long time coming. I've got two volunteers coming to help,
Sam and Ben, they're people that have been here before and they're really good workers,
great guys, funny, good to get along with and skilled. So yeah, we're going to start putting
up the three of us, just slow and steady, winches, ropes, the small tractor, the Land Rover and we're
just going to do it piece by piece, bit by bit and there's no timelines, there's no deadlines,
we just put it up, it goes up when it goes up and we try and do it nice and safe. So yeah,
let's get to work. Just rest it down for now and then we'll jiggle it. That's it, like that,
there you go. Okay, morning everyone, so it's a bit of a misty day and that's quite good,
we're happy about that, it won't be too hot. We got a little bit carried away yesterday without
filming, we've got the rig set up. I wanted to mess around with it a bit before I started filming,
just to make sure that it was all safe. We've got it tied off to foundations, we've got it bolted
into the bucket and we've got it winched back to the Land Rover. So that's pretty sturdy and we've
got plenty of height, so I think we're good, we're good to go. So first thing we're going to do,
I'm just waiting for the volunteers, we're going to knock this frame together and we lift it up,
get it in place. Something else that happened as well is that I knocked this together,
this is the exact same tube from the exact same length of pipe as that the bases sit on and then
this is the exact same steel plate, just an off cut obviously and exact same welder settings and
I took this up to my neighbour who's got a 10 ton press and we pressed it, that was where the press
was there, pressed it to max it out 10 tons and there was no sign of any movement, it could do at
least double. So yeah, I'm rating them for at least 10 tons which gives us 190 tons for the whole
building and yeah, more than enough. All right, first frame going together. Ready?
Mine's just resting on there, that's it, I'll come around to help you now.
Come that way a bit and that's going to pull that a little bit, that's okay there.
There we go, there we go. So let's get these rested on here, before we get too carried away.
Get it in there first, that's it, so bottom one first, bottom one first, slide that in,
there we go, we'll get that by spreading that leg around.
That's it, and then back to me a little bit, that's it there, okay. So now we want to bring
these legs in a little bit, one, two, three, that's it, one, two, three, that's it, okay,
get in somewhere. Some pegs are really tight and others aren't tight at all.
All right, stop there a sec, let's, once it starts going past the centre, I know we're
still all right at the moment, yeah, go a bit further, a little nudge that way,
like that, that's it, keep going I reckon, then ready, one, two, three, that's, that'll be plenty.
Yeah, keep it going for a bit longer, cool, let's go, keep it going, hope we've got enough height,
we did measure it, yeah, back a bit, keep it going, that's it,
we got the weight, looks good, yeah, the straps went a little bit slack, but
nothing too major, we need to watch that next time. Right, this one's almost on,
go on, keep going, one more, right, lift it Ben and you might get that, go on,
one more Sam, we're there, we're on, right, down a little bit, not too much,
that's probably about right there, yeah, a tiny bit more, one click if you can do,
there you go, I'm still floating a bit, go on, one more click, yeah, there you go, that's probably,
I'd say we're good there, most of that weight's back down now, sorted, first frame is up,
went really smooth and a bit of perspective with Ben up there, it is a beast and solid,
we got it braced off down to spikes in the ground and braced off over here as well,
yeah, start the next one next, we've got to move all the contraption,
build another frame, lift it, drop it on, so yeah, next section of the frame going up,
this one's going to be like a f-shaped bit, we're going to slot into the others,
so I'll just show you quickly, I was getting a bit of trouble with, it looked like the acids in
these, in this timber, tannic acid was corroding the galvanization a bit, so I've put a rubber
barrier between it and the plate, so yeah, just to help make them last even longer, so yeah,
we get this section built and then we lift it up, so the small bit's always at the top,
that's it, yeah, top plate's got to come down loads, in at the bottom first or
whichever way, but go all the way in with one first, that's it, there you go,
yeah, not too bad, we have opened up a gap here and there, because these have been sat outside
for a while, you know, things have started to dry, that does just happen, but this is well
go on Ben, that's it, no I'm all right at the minute, just keep it going up mate,
he's going to start easing off of me in a minute,
right, relax there a second, lean there, so I want to go like that,
yeah, that's it, that's it, right, now back, back a bit,
right, so now pull your leg, we need to get that mid rail lined up,
yeah, a bit more Sam, a bit more, yeah, that's it, stop there, stop there, mallet Ben,
up, up, go on, keep going, yeah, so give us a bit downwards, a little bit down until it touches,
there you go, right, we've got two frames up for the day, not too bad, we all started off the day
with a really cloudy and misty as you saw, and now the sun's out, so we've all ended up getting
sunburnt, so we're going to call it a day, and we'll get the other two sections up, but we'll
have that up tomorrow, that wall, and we'll start doing, joining these trusses into the wall plate,
just get it going up quick, yeah, balancing point's better than it was last time,
yeah, we're good boys, this is easier than it was last time, I was struggling,
this is much easier than last time, all right, a few more turns and we'll just stop for a minute,
reassess, go and get it a bit further Ben if you can, about there, hang it there for a minute,
we'll just check everything over, oh yeah, that's it, up, go, go, go, go, go, right, there we go,
right,
starting to go,
yeah, a bit of weight, and I'll pull on this again, there we go, there she's going,
stop, and yeah, go on Ben, get that down on there, that's it, good man, he's a beast, all right,
let's go, hold it there, hold it there, hold it there, I can't hold it anymore,
all right, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, see if Ben can get that on now,
can you get that on, yeah, good, good, okay, do you want me to lean it, yeah, out a bit,
that's it, all right, a bit down, a bit of down, Sam, it'll go, give it a jiggle and a poke,
there you go, hold on, hold on, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait,
all right, a little bit more down, wait, wait, wait, wait, there we go,
bit of weight off, yeah, yeah, good idea, and Ben, can you kick that leg, it wants to centre on the,
there you go, that's it, yeah, last frame up, we've just got to brace it, the last minute there,
when we were doing the drone, that mid-rail tenon was too long, it's clashing with the other one,
it wouldn't squeeze up, so I had to pull it back out and quickly cut a bit off the tenon,
but yeah, that's that one wall frame up, and it took us two days, I think, to do that,
with the old lifting contraption, I don't think that's bad going, all right, we've got to get set
out to do this truss work we need to do here next, let's get it off those edges, all right,
so we've got our first truss in place and the wall plates, the wall plates all set out,
level, so now we're just going to get these notches done, we need to do this for five trusses,
and then we take this wall apart again, and then we can carry on putting it together,
Sam's just marking them out, and then we'll cut them, and then start doing another one,
morning everyone, it's a new day, and we're just carrying on getting these trusses done,
we just cut the, what do we call them, the feet of the truss that sit in the housings,
we made a little template to do it, little plywood template, I'm sure it's not the way a timber
frame would do it, but it works for us, and it's lined up on our wall plate just right,
Sam's marking out the pockets, and we're going to cut the pockets out,
and then that'll be another truss done, three more to do after that,
hopefully get it done today,
good work boys, getting the hang of it,
all right, morning everyone, it's a new day, and just on the last of the seat cuts that need doing,
those, can you see those, yeah, those cuts, and me and Ben are about to start lifting this one on,
and do the pockets for it, and then there's one more to do after that, but that one's mostly cut
and done, yeah, we'll have this done today hopefully, and then we'll pack it away,
and keep erecting the frame, so yeah, just cutting out these pockets,
yeah, it's a bit of a rainy, miserable day today, but can't complain, because I've been
watching the forecast, hoping it was going to rain, for ages, just a little bit inconvenient
that it's decided to do it now, but I'm trying to do this, and when I was in the workshop working
on the water wheel, it was scorching hot, but we did need some rain, so that is good,
all right, you ready then, all right, number four,
filming is a bit of a challenge today, we've got this consistent rain,
which is really good for the land, we're pleased about it, but yeah, we're just playing at these
purlins, and marking and cutting them out, Ben's coming along and chipping them,
chipping the pockets out, doing it like this, so they're all consistent,
and any deviations in these, which the maximum we've got is about 10 mm,
are taken out, so that one's ready to cut, I thought it was going to be a lot worse when I woke
up working in this weather, it hasn't been too bad, morning everyone, so it's a bit of a nicer
day today, we've been battling through in the rain, and just as we got all that important work
done, it's cleared up, so today's job is going to be to pack all this away now, because we just
needed to do all that to make it all fit, because it was incomplete at this stage, so we've got to
pack all that away, and we can start assembling again, so yeah, we'll call that phase one,
if anyone's looking at these gaps under here, and thinking oh there's a big gap under there,
well that's by design, they're there so that the weight isn't on this edge, trying to split this,
because obviously if all the weight was sitting on here, we'd be splitting this, so we want the
weight down on this ledge, which it is, and then once all this is weighted, I'll probably put a
couple of packers under here, and then fix down as well, and so yeah, that's supposed to be like
that, and we've done all of the purling notches, and it all lines up very very nicely, see if I
can get it to line up for you, maybe, can't really tell, yeah, all the timbers are nicely in line,
all the trusses, and that way too, yeah, they all sit very nicely, so yeah, we're very pleased,
so we're going to pack it all away, and carry on assembling the frame,
yeah, we're going to get to work, so I hope you enjoyed the video, and thanks for watching.
