Why I Used to Grow my Plants on the Roof + New Colony Pot! - Drosera capensis "alba"

as you guys can tell this pot is very very full that means we are going to make our colony pot this is drastic pencils and we are going to see how many plants there are inside of this pot i think there there's at least around 20 pounds in here let me know what your guess is down below in the comments and at the end of the video we will see how many we got so let's see how close you were to the answer what the is going on here why is it done now what the hell is going on in here this makes me worried that there's like a bug in here or something the soil inside of those pots is not being pushed up and out of the pot so i think that there might be some kind of a bug or ants inside of this thing pushing all of the soil out i have literally not noticed this until right now so i'm a little bit worried because if you know these bugs in australia you'll know they are very weird let's take this pot apart count them up repot them into colony pots and i'm also going to tell you guys a story of how i used to grow these plants in south africa because i used to grow them on my roof so let's change the camera angle yeah i think there's an ant colony in here guys because i see an end oh man i'm scared now because there are red fire ants and uh the ants will bite me oh man i hope that i hope it was just one random answer not like a whole bunch of them so but you guys can tell look at all this soil on the sides here i'm even sure there's spiders in here because of how dense it is in their spider webs all i can do is just pull it out let's just let's just do it okay i don't see any ants yet let's turn this on to its side let's get the moss out so i think i might have gotten this perfectly you guys can hopefully see the gap here the gap here where there was soil and where there is no longer any soil something removed that soil and placed it all around the edge of this pot here see all of that there is some reason as to why this has happened so man i hope there's no no ants in here i see that one and i hope it's just all alone [Music] okay i'm going to split it down the middle and let's see what happens guys okay i don't see anything yet so i think we're gonna be okay we can't let up our guard just yet because you know next thing there's some big creepy bug in here and you know we're not even expecting it i see another little ant man this makes me nervous looks like we also have like a wild adelaide or something that has sprouted in here i actually have these guys popping up in all these different random pots which is very annoying because i don't like it when they're in the wrong pots okay so we've done the first half and now let's figure out what's going on in the second half because this is where the trouble marks be you know i don't want to build it up too much but i am really worried about there being a bug because i grow these plants so they can eat the bugs i don't want to touch the bugs you know so that's why we have them to kill them and now they're living with the plants okay so so far there hasn't been anything out of the ordinary we still have this little section to go but i really don't think that there's anything inside of here and at least anymore so let me finish dividing these and then we can see what might have been going on because i have some ideas as to what might have happened okay so we've gone through all of them as you guys can tell and i haven't seen any ant colonies or anything so let's change the camera and let me tell you what i think actually happened here so as you can tell my guess of at least 20 pounds is very wrong there are way more than that so don't forget to leave your guests down below in the comments guys and see if you're right at the end of the video as i said we got one drostra alicia over there which i will put in its own pot and i'm going to tell you guys what i think actually happened there because i was i genuinely did not see that before i picked up the plant so i noticed while these plants were growing that some of these leaves here were actually like all binded up together and when i think it happened is that a little while ago a spider moved in there and was living inside of this plant right that's the only thing that i can think of that would have caused all those leaves to go like that then i noticed that that's slowly started to disintegrate and disappear so that spider must have moved out but then what i think moves back in was some ants and that is probably what moved all of that soil there let me actually remove the soil here and see if there are any ants or something underneath it no there's nothing there besides like some old webs but yeah i think some ants moved in there moved all of that soil out which is why we had that cavity that i showed you guys and then i think they moved back out and i think that is why we saw a couple of ants sitting around because they sometimes stay in their old houses and they probably moved because of the water level being much higher than what it used to be and they obviously got flooded out or something like that so that is probably what happened now besides that we have taken all plants out we will get started on our colony parts if you haven't seen one of these colony parts before this part will be filled with at least 10 of these drastic pencils the elbow form which means that they are completely white as you can see white and light colored paint and i will put the best ones that i like inside of here the rest i will pop them up into their own small pots so i can sell to some of you guys who live in australia so let us get started with that and i want to tell you the story of how i used to grow my plants in south africa as i said i grew them on the roof i will tell you guys the story let me just tell you what we're doing with the colony pots like one of them i put a layer of straggler moss to block up all the holes we don't want the sand to fill out the bottom and then we just fill this thing up all the way to the top of the soil choose the palms that i lack and i put them in that is exactly what we do very very simple if you haven't seen quality pop before check them out in our previous videos and that is all of these fabulous bases done as you can see these holes are all blocked up with swagger moss so that another soil falls out and this is where the story begins because this thing takes a long time to fill up now this story starts back when i was still in south africa that was that's now at least a year ago and i started growing them on the roof of my house about three or four years ago now i don't really remember that much this is quite a long time ago this was just when i had finished high school in south africa when you finish high school you finish your grade 12 and i i think that i think you guys in america call that a senior i don't know what you guys call but it's great 12 months of africa or you're my trickier and that is your last year of schooling as you guys can get i understand that now we had moved from our old house which my parents were kind of growing like a corner somewhere with minimal art but at that point i had just started up my collection again because i'm not too sure about other countries but grade 12 in south africa is one of the most stressful years that you will ever have in your life i can promise you i've finished university degrees i have you know traveled across a different country i've moved to a different country i've done a lot of things and my grade 12 year was still one of the most stressful things that i've experienced so far and we had just moved into a new house and i wanted to start my collection up again so we had a big enough front yard and there was no space in the backyard because there was no backyard because it was just being live like we just had random people living there so i couldn't grow more plants there so you may be wondering okay well why why'd you grow your palms in the roof you had a perfectly good front garden well this is where the trouble starts when we moved across to our new place it was literally down the road it was like 400 meter walk it was very not far at all so we didn't have to do too much packing we just put the stuff in the car i drove to the house and we're done you know and i move my plants across as well as you as you do so i brought my plants across and i had set them up with the front yard in a nice little spot i had worked very hard to make the little tables that they were on level because they're on these metal tables and the ground at the front was very uneven so i had pushed them into the ground and raised some other parts up out of the ground so that the trays were all level for the plants and they were going to be very very happy in that spot but oh no this is when my grandfather came in he saw the plants and he's but he said your plants look really bad in that spot of the house i don't want any of your plants growing in the front garden at all so that basically translates into he doesn't want me to grow any plants anymore now my grandparents wouldn't let me play the drums i am a drum teacher they wouldn't let me play the guitar anymore they wouldn't let me play any of my instruments the plants are leaking i don't know what to do let me continue they wouldn't let me play the guitar wouldn't let me listen to music they wouldn't let me obviously grow my pants in the front yard so at this point in my life i had already stopped doing many things that i was quite passionate about them saying to me you can't basically you can't go to plants anymore really suck because i had nowhere else to grow them and i was really struggling to figure out a spot because they said i could grow it grow it out there you know out of the way when no one can see it which essentially meant like down a dark alleyway where no one can see it because there's no sunlight in the alleyway you know that type of thing and they started getting upset at me because they were compromising for me letting me grow in an alleyway whereas if i even put the plants there they would die so you know i'm not mad at them they just don't understand but it's still frustrating so i thought to myself where in this house can i grow the plants where there will be enough sunlight because all those places that they suggested to me there was no sun out there and as long as no one could see it well we were good right and that was when i started looking up i literally looked up at the top of the house and i said hey the roof is flat i could grow my plants up there now there was no way to actually get up onto the roof so that was another issue and it's salt if you know south africa at all it is one of the highest you know one of the countries in the world which has the highest crime rates and that means that everyone has very high walls the walls are generally like five meters or more with electric fences and stuff so it was very difficult for me to actually throw that away you know onto the roof but with the help of a ladder i was able to do it and later on getting the ladder out was too difficult because my grandparents went to the ladder packed away before 8 p.m and they wanted the ladder to only be used for 20 minutes and blah blah blah blah blah so i found a way to jump up onto the little wall next to the roof and then climb up onto the roof you know like a monkey so i was climbing like six meters up into the air and i did that to basically survey the land up there you know i was like christopher columbus seeing new frontiers for the first time or whatever rubbish they say for that and uh got up there and i was like yeah this could work because i checked on my phone where north was and where north was there was very few trees which meant that the plants would get a lot of sunlight so i just decided i would go and ask my grandfather if i could grow my plants on the roof they're obviously out of the way and no one will see them and i will be very happy because they'll have lots of sunlight obviously the compromise for me was that i had to grow them on the roof the compromise for them was just letting me do it so i went down i asked my grandfather can i blow my plants on the roof and he laughed at me he thought i was joking he honestly thought i was joking he literally laughed and said yeah i'll think about it i said no i'm like i'm being serious can i grow my plants in the roof because they have sunlight up there and they'll be out of the way then he's a okay more seriously this time i'll think about it a couple hours later he said okay well i've thought about it i think that's fine but i need to ask the landlord because we obviously didn't own the house so the next day or next week i think it was comes around and he had asked the landlord and the landlord underneath unbeknownst but the nurse to him didn't expect me to actually go ahead and do it so once i got the the confirmation i took all my plants up into the roof and i had about four three or four trays of plants i didn't have that many because like i said my trickier mine would create 12 year which would call my trick the trickier was the one of the most stressful things ever for me so it was very very difficult for me to actually look after my plans during the time because i genuinely had no time we used to get i would get home at about eight o'clock at night do homework until around midnight and then wake up again at five in the morning to go back to school so that happened for obviously the whole year of my grade 12 year so lots of plants died and i moved to my plants up into the onto the roof all two trays or whatever it was off just some some hardy sarah seniors and some hardy dressers which managed to survive somehow and i set everything up put the tables up and i had a polycarbonate panel that we have outside put that on top of them jerry-rigged something because i didn't have any money to build anything and my plants were not gonna be happy and it was like that for quite a while and i kept the plants up there going continuing to collect getting the collection bigger and bigger finding new ways to fix the plants growing situation with their roof and stuff and i got to the point where i then had about five trays full of different types of plants of sarah seniors drusters venus flag traps whatever i could get my hands on for pretty cheap i had it and that was when my mother wanted to get me one of those really cheap but you know there's big ones but they're really cheap greenhouses um they cost like 100 like 80 pounds or something like that she got that for me and i then put that up on the roof as well because i can grow my plants in the roof right so i did that and that was when the landlord started to kick himself because he was like oh he is actually growing his plants in the room yes it was okay i've chosen my ten plants they're basically the biggest ones and uh i was get started on potting them up let me continue the story so i had the greenhouse up and i had now started to collect some sarah i mean not serious news i've now started to collect some of the panties and like you guys may know i don't really want to grow any of the panties and it was the same mentality that i had back then i didn't want to grow any pen these until i had a greenhouse for them so i got the greenhouse and i started growing them in there and i made this greenhouse like a jungle to the best of my abilities to the best of my very limited budget of literally nothing i was able to get some water sprinklers up there and i would let them that sprinkler essentially run for the whole day because that's as you guys know those green the small plastic green houses get very hot very dry very quickly and the waters in there will keep it nice and humid and cool throughout the entire day so i literally just left the water on the entire day which for me is not a problem because our water was free you know this is a problem that animals have don't let people have free water because they will use it but don't worry guys i did reuse the water i wasn't wasting the water we used it in the garden i would water other plants and i used the same water to water the other plants that i had as well so it wasn't wasted then after this i eventually got solenoids and ink bird humidifier testers and stuff i do not recommend ink bird because they cause one of my green houses to catch on fire because their system that they gave me wasn't very good and they didn't even give me a refund so don't get involved guys they're terrible anyway i think the solenoids i got those inkberry things i've got some timers and then at this point the timers would switch on the water to water them the ink bird would let the thing you know the miss systems spray when it was too hot or too low in humidity and i had fans in there i even got some humidifiers where there's hydrofoggers had all of them going for those in the panties and they were very very happy they were growing extremely well but then the landlord said i don't want your stuff up there anymore you either take it down or you move it to the other flat roof and i was like sure challenge accepted the reason why he wanted to move is because he was a bad landlord and he thought himself let me not waterproof the roof that's so stupid because even if i didn't have my plants up there the rain would obviously cause damage to the concrete so not our fault he said i want your plants up there you're gonna move to that roof or take them down because we need we need to waterproof it now yeah two years later they've been waterproof it's still anyway i said sure thing let me take the pants down i took everything down the whole greenhouse the entire system i took it down gave them two weeks didn't do anything took it all back up he's like why is your parents back up well because you said you're gonna waterproof everything and you still haven't it's been two weeks you said the guy would do it tomorrow obviously hadn't happened he said okay fine i'll contact him again anyway a couple months later they said oh they're coming to waterproof let's take it down or move it took it down waited two weeks put it back up i was not going to move my plants for them i couldn't keep them on the ground i couldn't keep them the way they wanted me to not have them so i just kept it up there because they said one thing and obviously they didn't mean it eventually they said i don't want your plants up there at all you either have on the other roof or you don't have them anywhere you have them on the ground and i said fun i'll grab plants on the other roof so i carried everything across the roof which was obviously um like a slanted roof like a normal roof carried the entire greenhouse across all my plants all the water bottles because that roof was waterproofed and they knew that and they didn't think that i would want to grow my plants on the other side of the roof where it was a little bit more difficult to access and all these other things but i did it anyway took all my plants there because they said i could so i did it and i eventually started growing everything on the other side of the house so what i would have to do every single day at like 12 o'clock at night to whatever 11 o'clock at night jump onto the one wall jump up onto the roof just quietly calm over the roof because my grandparents didn't when i hear any of the tiles on the roof moving got to the other side and i built the greenhouse there i then built a second greenhouse up there and i had all the template plants up there as well and i had this one host part that came from the outside tap floating in the air over the roof to where i was bringing the plants and that is the story of how i used to grow my plants on the roof well obviously there's more to it but that is essentially how i got to growing my plants up on the roof so i hope you guys enjoyed that story little lots of um i'll do exactly as you say and i won't let you bully me out of you keeping your word so that's the story now obviously i can't talk and put the plants up at the same time i am not very multi whatever the word is not good at multitasking that's the word see i can't even think think and talk at the same time so there we go guys the colony part is now all finished up that wasn't me that was that so we have finished everything up i have to go repot all of these guys down here into their own small little pots that i can share with you guys hopefully in the future if you're in australia you want to buy some let me know those of you guys who want to know how many plants we got we got 65 plants 66
