In fact, the customer shows me a video of her air conditioner doing just that at the very beginning. What I found and what I repaired didn’t seem to have anything to do with the noise, but it fixed it. What I actually found instead of something hitting the fan blade, which is what it sounded like was that the time delay was causing the contactor to lose voltage and jump in and out. I fixed that, and in the process I checked out the condenser fan motor and remounted it. Fixing these things cause the system to run properly and I didn’t hear the fan blade hitting anything. I hope you enjoy the video!
Here's another one. Oh, that's pretty bad.
Okay, I have looked at that video like three,
four, five,
six different times, and I swear it looks like it's hitting something.
That's not exactly what
I found. I mean, it may have been,
and I may have absentmindedly fixed it, but I fixed a whole
other problem that was a serious problem
that possibly could have been doing that. Stay tuned.
I think
y'all may have heard what I heard.
This motor sounded
absolutely terrible.
Right now, I am just making sure we don't have power.
My screw's here
in this big old meter.
I know this is a large meter,
but it does everything that I could ask it to do.
All right,
let's see if we
got any power.
Holy smokes, look at that contactor.
No power.
Wow.
I am looking at this,
which looks like
an aftermarket
time delay,
and the burnt contactor right there.
That might be my problem that time delay and that burnt contactor.
Right now let's look at the fan.
Now that contactor
and that time delay is my number one concern right now.
I want to make sure there's
not something bad wrong in here.
There's only really one reason
to. I don't know why you would add a time delay to a board like that.
The board's going to have
have its own time delay
and the thermostat is going to have a time delay.
Let's see, two, three.
I'm going to grab a hold of the shaft,
hold it still, and try to turn it.
Or at least that was the intention.
Open that up a little bit more.
Alright, so get a good hold of the shaft.
Better than what I got.
Get a good hold of the shaft.
And what I'm checking for is to see if the hub is loose.
Or if the blades, this actual structure here,
has broken free from the hub.
And that little test tells me that neither of those are going on.
I don't see anywhere.
where anything is hitting this would
be my only possibility and i don't really see that there is
this that looks
a little bit bent but that
blade spins right about
here i don't see where it's
hitting
anything
y'all hold
on that's loud it's
loud to me too you
see that blade's
not hitting
anything nothing
spins freely nothing
and i'll show you it
is nowhere near these edges
it is not hitting anything. that may have
been damaged before. i'm gonna have to redo it. take
this apart and redo it. but um yeah there's
nothing wrong. that is not hitting anything.
i know that that contactor
is fried. tell you what. i need
to check something
with my meter to
verify that this time delay is causing a problem. we know
the contactor is a problem but i want to
possibly show that this is causing the problem.
So I need to turn it on to do that. Okay because
of this fence being here this is a little bit difficult.
I think this is common and I'm gonna
test right here.
I do not have a call right now.
Let me see something.
Okay that's what I was
trying to show you that when I push
in that contactor it seems to do okay. So I want to
measure. I want to catch that faulting. I'm
not like I said I'm not even real sure why it's there.
They have a digital thermostat on the wall.
I'm going to yank that out. Okay, so what we're
looking for now is possibly when this calls for
24 volts and if that faults, we should show this
faults, we should show a voltage come across here.
Let's try it. There's something I want you to see
right now. I have five volts between these two points right here
and I shouldn't have anything.
Now, when I first started it up, I heard a noise that sounded horrible,
but came on and started running,
and I'm already reading a 5-volt difference.
That was almost instantaneous,
and I'm not sure if you caught it,
but for a brief second,
that went to 26 volts.
That means that when I touched to the contactor, this opened up
for just a brief second and caused that contactor to jump.
See if we can do it again.
I'm going to try to do it without burning up the compressor.
Okay, there should be no, I don't think there's
any reason why there should be any voltage
between these two leads where I have the alligator clips,
right here and right here, but there
is.
We're going
to do this again.
Watch the voltage right here.
Okay, we're going to do something else.
Okay, now we are not reading the voltage.
We are bypassing, I have a,
okay, we are bypassing.
this time delay this is a time delay that breaks
for like three minutes after the system shuts off
so we have just bypassed it it's not doing it
anymore and yes we saw a digital thermostat
on the wall that needs to come out and
this contactor needs to be replaced i am
going to walk you through what it's like doing it
a quote with your phone right here with um Jobber
Manual labor is already right there at the top.
I'm going to do 1.5 and here,
if y'all will watch, if I can do it,
found condenser fan
motor and contactor making
an arcing noise in the,
not exactly what I found.
Customer showed me a video
of the air conditioner making an odd noise.
After inspecting the condenser fan motor,
which seemed to be kind of going slow in the
video.
I found the contactor to be very burnt
and then upon further inspection found the time delay to be faulty.
The estimate is to bypass the time delay and replace the contactor
and then make sure that there is a time delay on the thermostat.
So what we're going to do is rewrite that as professional.
I'll read to you
the professional rewrite on this.
Okay, so this is my whole repair labor.
Of course I can change all that if I want.
Contactor and that's it.
That's why I'm going
to give them no power.
I still haven't quite figured
out why that was put in there
and I have this crazy feeling that I'm going to figure it out
once it's gone.
I don't have a lot of space
that's why y'all
see me being careful
with where I cut.
Those time delays
can really help out
a system when it's
needed but they can
also cause that
If we can accomplish this through
the thermostat, that would be much better.
We'll go ahead and remove this low voltage.
Put this over
here.
Not exactly
the easiest place
to work.
See that?
You can't even get on that lug very well.
It looks like I have a yellow
and a black on the bottom.
I'm actually going to tie those two together
because it's going to be easier to do this.
It looks like the side with the break in it is on the left,
and that is our common.
I'm going to tie those two together.
That way, I know where they go on the bottom.
So now I can undo
my contactor.
The good thing about this one,
all the blacks and all the yellows go together.
Blacks on the left, where the brake is,
and I guess you would call this our shunt.
That's
on the right.
I prefer to use 40 amp contactors
because they are like that.
They have these lugs on either end.
Install it like
that and we'll be set.
In this case, I am actually,
except for a few wires,
I'm doing the top
of it one wire
at a time.
Like shooting a basketball goal from mid-court.
I couldn't even see that thing.
Okay, let's go ahead and do these.
Remember when we said black was going to be on the left?
Yellow on the right.
Okay, now these we're going to do one at a time.
I might lift that little
piece of the spade
connector on there.
The last time this contactor was replaced.
I'll tighten that up a little bit more in a second.
This is
a lot
easier
to do
when
it's
bolted
down.
Oh, I just lost
my wire nut right here.
I'm going to tighten it.
That goes...
And this one over here, I'm gonna try to move
these over to the side like they were.
Okay it looks like
that might be the
end of our high
voltage wires.
A low voltage
wire that is
kind of hard to get
to over there. Like that.
So something we need
to review is black,
black, black, yellow, yellow, yellow.
Excuse me there's only two yellows. That's this other
one right here. Yellow and yellow are on the same side.
Common is what we're breaking.
Power up
to it
and we'll
be done
with
this one.
And yes,
as a
greenhorn,
I many
times
left
these
power wires disconnected by mistake.
Okay, this ought to come right on. I'm going to go turn on
the power. You're going to hear it.
If there's a time delay already involved, it's not going to
come on right away.
Okay, let's
make sure we go
to the thermostat,
look it up,
and program in a
We're in a time delay, that's all we need.
Welcome to our AC unit.
We're going to put this on.
Y'all see that flashing light now.
It's going to wait two minutes before the compressor comes on.
Let's go verify. We are waiting for the time delay on the thermostat
because I just turned
the cooling back on and there goes the end
of my time delay. If y'all like videos like this
