NASA now estimates the asteroid has a 2.3% chance of striking the planet on December 22,
2032. While the odds remain slim, the potential consequences are alarming.
Where could it hit? NASA engineer David Rankin has mapped a possible impact zone,
known as the Risk Corridor, stretching from South America across the Pacific through
Sub-Saharan Africa and into Asia. This zone includes major population centers like Chennai,
India and Hainan Island, China. Although experts cannot yet pinpoint an exact impact location,
they warn that if the asteroid does strike, it could unleash a catastrophic explosion,
with a diameter of up to 90 meters, about the size of the Statue of Liberty.
2024 YR4 could cause destruction equivalent to an 8 megaton explosion. That's more than
500 times the power of the Hiroshima atomic bomb. If it impacts a populated area, the blast could
flatten buildings and cause fatalities up to 12 miles, 19 kilometers, from the explosion site.
Scientists compare it to the Tunguska event of 1908, which leveled 80 million trees over 830
square miles in Siberia. Will it actually hit Earth? Astronomers have been watching 2024 YR4
closely since its discovery in December 2024. At first, the impact risk was estimated at 1.2%.
But recent observations have nearly doubled that probability. However, experts stress that there
is still a 97.7% chance it will miss Earth entirely. The asteroid will make a close
approach in March, passing within 5 million miles, 8 million kilometers. This will give
scientists a critical opportunity to study its size and trajectory using powerful telescopes,
including the James Webb Space Telescope JWST. Could it hit the Moon instead? Interestingly,
there's also a small chance, about 1 in 333, that 2024 YR4 could crash into the Moon instead of
Earth. If that happens, it would create a spectacular explosion visible from our planet.
Over the next 8 years, space agencies like NASA and the European Space Agency ESA
will continue tracking YR4's orbit, refining impact predictions. Scientists are hopeful
that new data will confirm the asteroid poses no real danger to Earth. For now,
experts urge the public not to panic, emphasizing that asteroid impact predictions
often change as more information becomes available.
The world will be watching closely as the countdown to 2032 continues.
