got a really serious topic for you guys
uh suicide rates amongst Asian-American
youth sees alarming rise over two
decades this is a Boston University
study shout out to Rebel yellow I got
this uh article from there long story
short from 1999 to 2021 the
Asian-American male suicide rate rose up
72% from 1999 to 2021 the Asian-American
female rate jumped up 125% now the Dem
graphic splits for every single
ethnicity in America also went up to be
fair it wasn't only asian-americans but
asian-americans had the lowest default
number like Baseline so it means that
their percentage increase obviously uh
can be much larger right so here are
some of the key findings guys basically
that they were saying that um a lot of
aapi Youth you know maybe they're
theorizing due to the model minority
stereotype the pressure to excel they
don't really give any sort of ideation
like warning signs before attempting
they have like less warning signs but
they also may feel less likely to seek
help due to this pressure to be Su uh
successful uplift the family bloodline
etc etc and definitely one of my main
things that I want to encourage
everybody there is like you can still
get help with your mental health and it
does not mean that you've already failed
on this path that I know a lot of us
feel like our grandparents are counting
on us our parents are counting on us
to to be successful make this new brand
this new whole new way for ourselves in
America but we got to not we got to
normalize getting help earlier in the
journey because a lot of times when you
get it way later it's different than
getting it way earlier right because
things snowball they're talking about
the rise of social media I think that
that's obviously something that is
probably impacting everybody across
ethnic ethnicities but differently right
um a lot of Asians feel more bullied
than for example like Asians generally
obviously I'm not speaking on
everybody's situation they're not
they're not necessarily coming from as
often from broken homes and bullying
other kids as a result of needing to
channel that anger but a lot of
asian-americans they're the ones
oftentimes getting actually bullied
right um you know they talk about
tailored Solutions sought out you know
whether that's in the community because
uh a lot of Asians have you know the
hidden ideation also there's actually a
lot of disparities between Asian
subgroups Filipino Vietnamese and Korean
youth have higher rates whereas Chinese
and Indian youth have lower rates so
real quick guys basically you know we've
gotten through the article right here
and one thing that I wanted to tell
people is that I want to normalize
talking about mental health and
depression and ideation it's even hard
for me to use this word because I just
don't even want to get demonetized but
basically uh
there's a lot of different ways to sort
of break down helplessness and I know
I've been through therapy myself I've
been through bouts of Depression years
ago in and out has been a roller coaster
ride and I finally feel like I'm at a
point now where I could tell you guys
about it uh through my own experience
I'm not an expert everybody should go
seek expert help but but even if you
just need to talk to somebody I think
talking to chat GPT is not wrong Chad
GPT is never generally going to steer
you in the wrong direction um it's a
good way to get the ball rolling I think
that the key thing here is to identify
that there's different people in the
same situation everybody needs help
everybody needs therapy but it could be
for a different situation like for
example number one you could be a trauma
Survivor somebody who suffered abuse
assault or extreme loss and you feel
trapped by the PTSD which is the
post-traumatic stress syndrome so you
know for example if you do that you're
going to need the trauma therapy you
know what I mean and there's like a
variety of different types you're going
to need long-term support because you've
actually gone through something that's
super harsh I have people in my own
family that have been through super
harsh things especially from the older
generation you know there was a lot of
wars in Asia and stuff like that and
from two generations back but we don't
have to get into that but basically I've
seen that style that's not the style
that I was subject to myself okay number
two this is something I'm more familiar
with situational hopelessness there's
those are the people who feel feel stuck
with the options that they can
realistically manifest in their mind
whether that's Financial ruin divorce
career failure no way out this is
probably something that is one of the
more uh easy types of depression to
tackle right uh because you can just
expand your options you can get into new
environments experience some mindset
shifts and you know that's like
something that I definitely feel like in
terms of my material or the things that
I want to put out forth into the world I
want to be able to address people who
fall in a Camp number two there's people
camp number three chemical imbalance and
hormonal issues some people are really
suffering from Bad diet no sleep no sun
low testosterone chronic inflammation
messing with their brain
chemistry you know this is like even
something that like doctors talk a lot
about you know obviously you see all
this stuff right out right now about
saas and cold plunges and um sun therapy
and stuff like that all the huberman
stuff you know and often times this
chemical imbalance and hormonal issue
this gets thrown on top of whatever else
everybody's already going through and
that's really bad right so that's almost
like a physical thing this is involving
like science right Point number four
chronical mental illness you know people
may have issues like bipolar BPD
schizophrenia you know they cause
reoccurring thoughts so you know this in
this case it could be medication it
could be therapy it could be
Psychotherapy it could be just lifestyle
stability you know what I mean you need
to get out of the situations that you're
in point number five you could be going
through cultural and social pressure for
example you could be rejected because of
a certain identity that you have you
have really high academic pressure
really extreme
loneliness you know the solutions to
this are Community social belonging
leaving toxic environments number six
you could be an existential or
nihilistic thinker so there's that I
might be victim to this too guys you
know there's people who are super deep
thinkers and they kind of struggle to
find the meaning in life and uh there's
some very famous ones throughout history
right and you know you have to build
purpose you have to fight for a cause
create personal meaning because I do
think there's certain people maybe for
whatever reason that makes them such a
hyper big thinker they're like they're
such a big thinker and they're like
thinking about life like what's the
point of even doing this what are we all
in this like theater play for right
Point number seven impulsive and
destructive types for example you could
be engaging or one could be engaging in
a lot of hardcore drugs Reckless
Behavior thrill seeking or acting on an
extreme version of their emotions at the
moment right you have to get go through
impulse control therapy Deo detox
emotional regulation because obviously a
lot of drugs they going to lead to a lot
of hyper erratic behavior and that's
going to lead to a lot of downside
outcomes Point number eight euthanasia
irrational you know situations where you
may be in terminal illness for example
chronic pain loss of autonomy obviously
this is uh more of the Dr Koran type of
debate and uh yeah obviously the there
has to be a lot of ethical discussions
that really surround every individual
situation going through these and um
basically what I wanted to do by
pointing out these different eight
layers today is I wanted to
normalize just my understanding of this
because I think every time that these
studies come out we come out and we're
like oh yo we need to make
Asian-American therapy available on a
more Reg level absolutely true we need
to make talking about it within our
community more normal but nobody's
really breaking it down in this sense
but I think when we break it down in
this way it just more normalizes it
because I think a lot more of us go
through these things and have been
through these situations not at every
level like we said that that was just
eight and I'm sure there's like eight
more but um it kind of goes to show you
that you could fall into one of these
categories and you don't even know it
and and just me even spelling out these
eight categories it could help you sort
of identify what you may be going
through or somebody around you may be
going through and it just more
normalizes because it
basically speak it just makes it less of
a taboo topic and it makes it less of a
mysterious Topic in the sense of that
you can actually pull the veil from
behind it and uh anyway back to the
basics though that that we've stated in
previous videos I will say this we got
to normalize getting therapy I think
start talking to chat GPT Plus in the
voice mode is a great way it's $20 per
month I think that that's a great way to
point you in the right direction for
most people because what I realize is a
lot of people they're just not really
comfortable stepping into getting
professional Psychotherapy okay even for
myself I used to cringe at telling
anybody that I was thinking about
getting Psychotherapy or that I got
Psychotherapy Psychotherapy is is
literally just talking to somebody who's
been professionally trained and
obviously understanding a wide variety
of issues and it really did help me to
get an Asian therapist um number two I
think you just got to sleep right guys
if we sleep right it's going to reset
cortisol levels and it's going to boost
serotonin serotonin is really a natural
chemical mood stabilizer you know like
we said sometimes it's physical too I
mean guys I've been pushing you know
sauna work breath work getting your
androgens into check like please guys
this is so crucial the reason why
sometimes people feel so cranky is
because they haven't gotten enough sleep
and their cortisol levels are just
surging all out of control and that's
why people say you know that's why there
is even that joke of like have a
Snickers bar because the Snickers bar is
supposed to like calm down some of the
hunger angriness right uh I I I I like
terms like hangry but it doesn't fully
explain the physiology behind why the
hunger is turning into anger right
please guys we got to
we got to not only consume sad music or
sad movies or at least not overly
depressing ones you guys know what is
overly depressing movies and music and
themes and memes and like listen I'm not
saying everybody isn't entitled to
indulge a little bit sometimes because
that that does satisfy an itch but guys
there's got to be a limitation to it and
we also got to know you know we got to
listen to more uplifting things uh
brighter moods and things like that um
we got to take care of even what we eat
real Whole Foods I mean this kind of
goes back to the thing like I
said I think therapists and I've been
through therapy Professional Therapy IV
League therapists expensive ones they're
great they do a great job of pointing
you through you know what may or who may
have failed you earlier in your
childhood which leads you to certain
emotions that sort of fester and
snowball throughout your life I never
would have been able to figure that out
without my professional therapist
however I will say that sometimes
they're not necessarily uh qualified or
maybe they don't feel comfortable or
maybe I don't even know if they believe
or not to mention all the other things
that I just mentioned about you know
sleep and everything else like that uh
like we said I'm not saying you know the
anti-depressants and everything else I'm
not saying obviously there's medical
science and research to back all that up
but you got to take a look at your own
situation and see what is fit for you
and you know even if you are a friend
watching this video video and you are
completely fine you're super happy with
your life legitimately and not just
showing it if you have somebody else in
your circle who's not this hopefully
this video even UPS your IQ and even
gives you at least a few more questions
to ask like we said we're not all trying
to be WebMD and diagnose people I get it
people have degrees for a reason um and
I just think the reason why it's so
important to make this video and I
wanted to be so Lucid with you guys
hopefully you can feel the real emotion
in my voice is because this is as a
Asian our lack of mental health
awareness and often times our lack of
even having anybody around us in our
circles that's going to be helpful to
speak to about mental health is our
version of poverty like a lot of
asian-americans statistically they do
have their parents you know what I mean
we have a community we know where we
came from we know what part of the world
we're from and what ancient
civilizations we came from but I would
say that mental health is absolutely an
Asian-American poverty blind spot
and it's different for every Community I
think a lot of as you know communities
they struggle with mental health but in
different ways and I just think that a
lot of Asians they don't have somebody
useful to speak to within their Inner
Circle where they can just move the
conversation in a real Direction I'm not
saying you don't have somebody that you
talk to but other people might be oh man
I hope you feel better like it's going
to be all right I don't know if it's
going to be all right for somebody who's
actually been through some
multigenerational trauma or actually
some sort of actual physical trauma is
really going to be the right answer to
be honest you know what I mean they're
going to actually going to need to work
through things like real PT real
Physical Therapy you know what I mean
but it's Physical Therapy of the heart
and of the mind and not just of your
hamstring muscle and things like that
and uh listen guys we can either address
the issues or not I know that mental
health is a blind spot for Asian culture
but now we're living in Western society
and you could be across the world
outside of the West physical West still
living with Western Society right so
these issues are going to present
themselves and we like we said as a
community we're either going to confront
these issues or we're not and hopefully
this video can just raise more awareness
because uh and we're going to continue
to raise more awareness because I I
thought about it and there was a time
like I said that I wasn't even feel I
didn't even feel comfortable talking
about myself going through psycho
therapy and getting therapists or
psychologists and things like that prior
so um let me know what you guys think of
this study in the comments section below
and let me know what you guys think are
techniques that would work within the
Asian-American Community or are just in
general you know what I mean like I
think it is applicable to every single
Community but it is true that of course
every community in terms of what's
driving it or in terms of The Messengers
that people relate to or the tonality or
the messaging style that people relate
to is going to vary let me know what you
guys think in the comments section below
till next time I'm out peace
