President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky
clashed at a White House meeting that ended in disaster on Friday.
According to Fox News, tensions had flared before the event began.
The Ukrainian president was presented with a minerals for security agreement
by the Trump administration prior to the press event,
but the deal included no security guarantees to protect Ukraine from another Russian invasion.
Zelensky refused to sign the deal and it angered Trump and Vance.
Zelensky had warned repeatedly ahead of his trip to Washington
that Kyiv needed these security assurances in order to reach a mineral agreement.
During an interview with Brett Baier on Fox News,
Zelensky confirmed that the White House included a security guarantee for infrastructure.
That's not enough, he said, stressing that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not trustworthy
and Putin invaded Ukrainian territories where U.S. companies were operating during the war.
After the blow-up of the meeting, Zelensky said he still wanted to be friends with Trump.
I'm very thankful to Americans for all your support, he said during the Fox News interview.
You helped us a lot from the very beginning. You helped us to survive.
He later admitted the public argument was not good,
but seemed confident that his relationship with the U.S. president could recover.
I just want to be honest and I just want our partners to understand the situation correctly
and I want to understand everything correctly.
That's about us, not to lose our friendship, he said.
However, Zelensky fell short of apologizing to Trump and Vance.
He said, I respect the president and I respect American people.
When asked if he owed the president an apology,
some Ukrainians hope Europe can support their country after the eventful meeting.
Many European countries voiced their support of Ukraine.
We hope they will step up to increase aid to Ukraine,
primarily with military equipment and ammunition.
Concerning America,
we are very thankful to them for the help we have received all this time and keep receiving now.
But our dignity, our honor should stand above everything.
We have come a path too difficult to allow.
Maybe it will sound too harsh to wipe the feet on us.
