A secret network of federal workers has organized to fight back against the Trump administration. The group is now working to form strategies and share information on encrypted apps. Alongside this, new U.S. intelligence shows that the Chinese regime is attempting to recruit disgruntled U.S. federal employees.
In other news, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that Trump's freeze on some USAID payments will have to go through. The denial of Trump’s attempts to block a lower court order could signal how other legal challenges over money heading to international programs may go.
We'll discuss these topics and others, in this episode of Crossroads.
President Donald Trump announced during his recent address to Congress that the United States is going to reclaim the Panama Canal.
To further enhance our national security, my administration will be reclaiming the Panama Canal, and we've already started doing it.
According to Trump, this is necessary because the canal is falling under the Chinese Communist Party's influence.
He's saying we signed this deal with Panama, not China.
And now, BlackRock has reached an agreement to acquire two critical port operations on the Panama Canal from Hong Kong-based C.K. Hutchinson Holdings Ltd.
These two ports are the Balboa and Cristobal ports, which are the two main maritime gateways to the canal.
This move in particular is not the United States buying back the whole canal or completely curbing the Chinese regime's influence in Panama.
The CCP has other assets there, including, for example, the Parallel Canal that's being built right alongside the U.S. one,
and that canal has water issues because it pulls its water from the American Canal.
But the issue really ties into something much broader.
The Chinese Communist Party has not pushed its influence just around the canal.
It's something that has been working throughout the entire country.
I saw it personally when I was there in Panama with some of the major infrastructure projects,
including a big program they have to build bridges and highways through the Darien Gap, which would connect North America to South America.
And it's not just the Panama Canal either.
The CCP's efforts to build canals elsewhere also tie into a broader agenda.
The Communist regime is trying to build what it calls the String of Pearls.
These are its efforts to control all global shipping choke points.
Now, part of that is about controlling global maritime trade, which is also part of the problem Trump has brought up with Panama.
The United States has to pay money to use the canal, even though we built it.
We have to pay to use the thing we built.
And if China controls it, what does that mean?
It means the CCP can effectively put fees that work like tariffs on all global shipping.
