ladies and gentlemen this is Joe's video
games back with another great machine
here it's an arcade game but it's a
pinball game too right arcade games
aren't necessarily video games they're
just games in an arcade so this is an
arcade game this really awesome pinball
machine this is n this is Sterns
1980 flight
2000 it's a really cool game we still
got a a couple little things to do on it
but it's pretty much
finished we got this in a while back and
I've been working on it a little bit
it's a widebody
game again it came out in
1980 it's kind of famous it's considered
one of the better
Sterns show you a little bit of the
artwork and
stuff this is a widebody it was Stern's
first game with uh speed
so it has like a synthesized voice which
fits the Space theme really
well and this came out in 1980 so it was
I think it was after Williams did speech
but it was before uh Bal did
speech and the back glass is pretty
awesome flight
2000 so there's these little ships and
when you see them at
first if you don't pay any attention you
don't notice what's going on but there's
a like a lady in that
ship and then on
these there's a guy standing in that
one and a guy standing in that
one and a guy standing in that
one it's just a cool game it's a it's a
four player game and it has this really
unique uh multiball
feature um where basically you count
down you lock two balls and then you and
actually has a physical ball lock I'll
show you that here in a minute and you
uh it actually counts down and then you
start a three ball multiball with it
this game was
designed by the great Harry Williams
there's his signature right
there the story behind it's kind of
interesting it's not necessarily about
this particular game but Harry Williams
is the Harry Williams that started
Williams
pinball um some people call him the
father of pinball he's he's not
necessarily that but he was definitely a
pioneer he's one of the early guys he
was working in the industry in the 20s
that's a long time ago and uh in the 30s
he was significantly working in Industry
designing machines and stuff and he was
real creative at coming up with like
mechanical things so one of the things
that he came up with with
was they were having problems where
people were cheating the machines by
beating on them you know like moving
them around and stuff and so he invented
and even named the Tilt mechanism that's
in all of the you know pretty much every
pinball machines so love it or hate it
he came up with the Tilt
mechanism and kind of even came up with
that word before that nobody really used
that word but now you know people use
the word tilt it's not always uh doesn't
always have a pinball
connotation um but that was just one of
his inventions he came up with all kinds
of cool stuff um little electric things
back whenever he started in the 30s
there were pinball machines would have
uh hardly anything on them just pins and
holes and uh he came up with little
electric doodads that ran off batteries
and stuff that made it do different
things and over his entire career he
came up with all kinds of stuff I'm not
sure if he invented if he personally
invented that little ball Walker thing
that I'll show you here in a minute
that's so cool about this game I don't
know if he was the one that invented
that maybe some of the um engineers at
Stern came up with it but so anyway in
the 40s Harry Stern I mean Harry
Williams started Williams manufacturing
company with
u uh Sam Stern friend of his and the two
of them founded that company in the 40s
well about 1960 they sold the company um
and uh Mr Williams retired and enjoyed a
nice retirement right
well in the late 70s
1977 or so Sam Stern's son Gary Stern
got together a bunch of money and
some some uh employees and bought out
Chicago Coin and turned it into Stern
Electronics
um you can see on the back glass
there so if you go back and you think
about this this was a couple years after
Stern Electronics was founded and you
know it was founded by Sam Stern's
friend I mean a son Gary Stern well when
he founded the company they needed
pinball designs so Sam Stern picked up
the phone and called his
then 70-year-old buddy from back in the
day Harry Williams the brilliant pinball
inventor brought him out out of
retirement and he started designing
games for stern again so he designed
several of them this is one of them this
this came out in late 1980 and like I
said it's a wide body it's got multiball
It's got speech it was their first game
with speech and so if you know the the
pinball designers you know different
ones do different things but what he was
really good at was coming out with the
layout coming up with the layout of the
Playfield and he designed this game in
late 1980 he did two or three more games
um by that time he was in his late 70s
and uh he retired again and he passed
away I think uh about two years after he
designed this game so this is you know
this isn't necessarily his best game but
it's certainly one of his good ones um
so like I said it's a wide body so
there's a lot more shots on the game
you've got a You' got five drop targets
here 1 2 3 4 5 you can see a couple of
those have broken and been replaced over
the years and the font's a little
different over here you've got three
more drop targets there's a really cool
shot from this left flipper it's kind of
hard to do but it can be done where you
make that shot right it through there
hit that spinner that's the wrong
spinner but it
spins hit that spinner and hit all three
drop targets and so you see this here
says top score uh 50,000 points drop
three targets with one shot when light
is lit if you if you knock all three of
them down with one shot and that lights
on you get 50,000 points which is a cool
shot and you can make that shot it's
it's cool whenever you do um yeah that
spinner has been replaced you can see
it's got the wrong art on it it should
have the art like this one on it but it
looks kind of cool so we left it plus
you can't really I guess we could buy a
sticker for it but that don't make a
replacement spinner I don't believe so
anyway uh you got two pop bumpers there
and you've got these rollover l L at the
top says 5,000 in advanced bonus
everyone you go
through all
right and then you've
got your in Lanes
here and your in Lanes
here and then you have the ball Walker
now there there's a shot right up the
middle there too that special shot
25,000 and increased bonus
multiplier spot blast when lit
I'll show you that here in a minute so
basically you have this cool shot up
this side through that
spinner and the ball can if you hit it
hard enough it can come all the way up
and then it lands and it hits that
little switch right there you can barely
see it that little wire that's sticking
up there is a switch well when it hits
that the uh little assembly here knows
that there's a ball right there so it
lowers it pulls a coil in and it lowers
that little thing there this one comes
up then it reverses and the ball sits
right there so the first ball sits right
there and it uh it locks it like that
and it says first ball
locked if you knock a second one up
there the second ball hits that little
switch again and the little they call it
a ball Walker it does this number again
and the one ball drops down to the
second spot and this ball drops to the
first spot and so it locks there and the
other ball locks there and it says
second stage locked or whatever you know
and so once you've done that every ball
you knock up through there will cycle
through so with the if if you knock a
third ball up through here when it hits
here the ball Walker walks and the ball
drops down to here hits that switch gets
kicked out up to here hits that switch
gets kicked out up to here back into the
thing but since it since it did that the
two s are still locked you just cycled
one through
basically so it'll keep doing that over
and over and over again until you do the
right sequence so basically you got to
lock two balls and then you have to
spell blast off so the way you do that
is where is the
B yeah the B's over here in the out lane
b l a s t blast and if you get one word
it goes
blast and
then o
f f you don't have to do it in order or
anything but if you spell out blast off
each time you hit one it lights up it
over here
right and whenever you finally get that
done it says all system go all systems
go Rockets ready to blast off and so
then what you do is you go to these drop
targets and you complete them in reverse
order 5 4 3 2
1 and when you do it blasts off the
extra balls and now you've got a three
ball multiball really cool I mean it's
just a unique way to do it Harry
Williams guy was pretty
cool so there it is flight 2000 really
fun game I'll get the tripod and we'll
set it up and we'll play it a little bit
and you can hear uh you can hear the
speech and see what you think standard
disclaimer I am not a great pinball
player but we'll play through a couple
rounds and let you see what it's all
about all right folks here we go I've
turned the volume up a little bit I know
it's kind of hard to see what's going on
but uh you can see it a little better
when the ball's rolling
around sometimes I film these with the
glass off I left it on on this one with
the glass off it just it's not it just
doesn't they don't play right like
everything's the uh coils are really
loud and it
just I like playing with the glass on so
here we go hopefully it's not too
loud that's how speech
sounded in
1980 all right so basically what I'm
going to try to do first is uh either
try to lock two balls and also try to
spell blast off so a lot of what I'm
going to try to do is try to get the
ball up that way so I can get those top
four
rollovers
W yeah stage go first stage go so the
first ball is locked and I have got the
B and the a so far and I'm still on ball
one there's the
T there's the
o
oh hit the glass A little
bit oh missed
it got the
f got that cool red target right in the
middle
ah so I'm trying to get it back up to
the rollovers at the top
there sometimes the pop bumpers will
kick it up through one of the lanes and
you get another
letter so now I'm going try to I'm
cradling it so I'll try to make that uh
the lock
shot oh not quite
enough there we go so I got the
L
that's a cool shot you can make that
shot all the way up to Playfield through
the through the right roll
over blast blast all right and I've
almost got off it's just the F on the
side so now I got the lock a
ball
I don't think I can lock it with the
left flipper I don't think there's any
way to handle
me and I don't know you can sometimes
you can pass the ball from the left
flipper to the right flipper but I'm not
really good enough to do
that see that shot it goes through the
the right roll through at the top
all the way from the left
flipper I got I got the three uh the
three drop Targets in one shot oh man I
can't make that
shot
ah
oh
okay that was a pretty good ball I think
I got 470,000 I locked one ball and I
spelled out blast off already so now I I
just need to lock another ball and at
the top you can't see it on the camera
but at the top it says uh first stage go
already and you can see the Apollo one
light is lit right
here and I I don't know if you saw that
shot I was talking about this left
flipper you can hit the
ball again all praise to Harry Williams
you can hit the ball from here and this
is a wide body machine it's really big
you can hit the ball from here all the
way up the
Playfield and through this roll over so
I I made that shot a couple times all
the way up and through and then it
bounce around and go through another one
fantastic
shot
oh the pinball game giveth and the
pinball game taketh away I I got 470,000
on the first ball and 29,000 on the
second ball
sucks
almost did it
again Ah that's
that horrible so I'm going to do it
again it's going to keep that one ball
up there locked but if you shoot up
through there it'll let that one go and
it'll say uh or it'll just lock one even
though you got two up
there
ooh little
glass there we
go see it said first stage go but both
are locked it's going to eject one after
I get the second one in it'll eject the
other one
out
oh that's nice didn't didn't make
anything happen but it was
nice oh
hey I think I did it with the left
flipper I'll have to watch the video
back all right so I got both balls
locked already now I just need to spell
blast off and do the drop
targets
ah all right so all I need is the T and
the
f
ah
Horrible Harry Williams would not be
proud so I need that I need that shot I
was bragging
about there's the
f all right so I got to live up at the
top
there commence countdown
folks the five's already down though I
don't know if it'll work like
that I guess it
will
oh
go
man I had one drop Target
left all right folks I am running out of
quarters PR for Mission but I am
prepared for the
mission
ah but I wasn't prepared for
that
first stage go first stage
go
ah it's too fast for
me yeah yeah
BL second stage go so I need to get that
f
I don't know how I can get it over there
without it just popcorning over
there there we
go down blast off
woooo here we
go blast
ah I lost
one well that was
shortlived but it was
fun and there we
go
all right got the new high score since I
worked on the board though which really
isn't all that impressive but there you
go glad I finally got it to
work the uh this game really looks good
and with the lights on and everything
so there you have it that is Sterns 1980
flight 2000 really cool game um by the
time you see this video flight 2000 may
have flown onto its new
home so this video isn't really just to
sell it to you or anything um we're just
trying to show some cool games that we
get in we try to film a video if we get
anything interesting in it somebody
might want to see uh you may be watching
this 10 years from now I don't know but
um you can see all of the games that we
do have for sale right now even if it is
10 years from now uh on lions arcade.com
